Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good evening! Venzun report: I made 2 roasts in the crockpot with potatoes, carrots, onion and beef broth. Both were delicious! DD25 didnt care so much for the stuff from Carol--said it tasted "gamey." THat roast was redder in color and more tender I thought. The one from my neighbor was more pale, drier and tasted more like beef I guess. WHat do you think? Diff in age, diet, cuts? All of the above?
TOnight's report: I did steaks from the one from our neighbor. We were out of propane...(DH--I HAVE to get more propane tanks so we wont runout any more!) [Yeah, the trick is to fill them once they are empty......

] so I made them under the broiler. #-4 mins a side and they were fantastic! It was a last minute thing so I didnt get the chance to marinate them BigZ...I have to check my Worcestershire sauce for gluten...I'll try it next time! Anyhow--I sure wish I could find my camera (I cleaned) so I could take pics of our fall dinners again. Tonight was the V. steak, mixed veggies (frozen variety) baked sweet potatoes with lime and cilantro, and parsley buttered potatoes from the garden! We are eating desert now, baked rice pudding with apples and raisins--MMMMM!
Got lots of birds moved today...stripes with stripes, black and black, muffs and beards....so fun! I am starting to see some organization!
Did I tell you about my visit with Deb? I thought I did...but the old mind's not what it used to be! Oh yeah--now I remember! I talked about my gift card and that was after...oh brother! I hope she gets to posting some of the pics she took of my dog. What a talented lady!!!

OK--it is bedtime for me...I really want to finish my book tonight! Sweet dreams everyone! Terri O

Last night DH was late coming home from work. He was at the Elcho shop by himself. When he went to turn out the lights to leave he felt light headed and dizzy. He said he sat on the floor for over a half hour.
I asked if he thought he should get checked out at the ER since he has had blood clots in lungs and legs before and is on warfarin. He said no, he thought it was because HE DIDN'T EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING ALL DAY !!!!
barnie.gif

So after he sat down and ate and drank he felt much better !!
th.gif

So today I was going to stay home all day, well didn't work out that way. Drove to town, again and bought him some gatorade, tons of lunch stuff, snacks etc. $35 worth. Then was going to come home and do more chicken chores. He was working in Antigo today and was going to pick up chicken food on the way home, well then he had to go to the Elcho shop and work overtime. So guess who had to drive another 40 miles to get the food !!! I didn't mind but I just want to stay home for even two days in a row and just chill out with the animals !!!

Stopped at the local town hall today. They have a flea market every Wednesday.
Bunch of the old ladies that used to be at the Mole Lake Casino Flea Market are now at this one, only 3 miles or so from me. Anyway one lady was selling eggs there and I said I didn't think she could realy cause I tried to go to the farmers market in town and was told I couldn't. I said be careful. She said well I'm running the show !!!
wee.gif

So I might start making some feather earrings and some wool mittens and maybe some feed sack bags and sell there. Only problem is she sells the eggs for $1.50 a doz and $1.00 for the pullet eggs !!! I can't sell for less then $2.00 dozen.
Her sign said the pullets were "less Cholesterol" I mentioned it and she said yes, they are smaller so they have "less Cholestrerol" !!!!
gig.gif
I got a kick out of that !!!
Bunch of nice old ladies, I'd fit right in !!!
One lady knits mittens for babies and kids and they are so perfect they look like they were done by machine !!! I have to find out what color my nieces baby's winter coats are and get her a few pairs. Only $2.00 a pair.
Plus they have the string attached from one mitten to the other so they don't lose them.
Ok, gonna submit before I lose it !!

Night all !!

Glad to see Jim and kin are OK... thanks for calling him Brent!

CC... cute pic.!

KNA... If you plan on building a coop for the girls.... remember "chicken math"! You may want to plan on a coop for at least 16!

Were those "hatching eggs" you gave your broody?

Well, we think our plumbing issues are taken care of! 2nd son came and finished it up tonight... first flushes went fine then when my GS (3) went my DIL said it didn't go down!
barnie.gif
You should have seen the look on 2nd son's face!
hit.gif
Turns out it just needed a little "encouragement". Think it's all good now!
clap.gif
Now have at least 2 loads of dishes to do!
hmm.png
Hope I can finish canning tomorrow so I can get that stuff put away and out of my way!

We had breakfast for supper since 2nd son, DIL, and grandkids were here. Had Scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, sausage, corn bread and sauteed veggies. The veggies were yellow squash, green tomatoes, firm red tomatoes, onion, green peppers and topped with a dash of spike and cilantro. Went well with the eggs. Might freeze some of whats left for omelets.

Beak count OK tonight but still -1 from yesterday.

Oh well, hazards of free ranging. At least it didn't take a "pet" yet. Have to work on discouraging the flying predators I guess.

Might be back later...

from FT
! I have to find out what color my baby nieces baby is and get her a few pairs. Only $2.00 a pair.

LOL... I think I know what you meant.... but

I vote for green!

I have this ingenious idea to make my own "Night Guard" predator deterent.
I'm sure you all have seen them advertised in the Backyard Poultry magazines right.
It is a box tha has two blinking red lights on it that are suppose to make the predators think it is a pair of eyes. At least that is my impression of it.
They run about $20 and they suggest 4 of them facing different directions.

Well I thought I would buy some red Christmas lights and either

1) Put black tape over several of them and leave 2 pair of eyes every so often and keep them on the flashing mode.

2) Another idea would be to put a set of the red Christmas lights in a black plastic flower pot and either drill holes for the sets of eyes and poke the lights threw or just dill the holes and see if the lights give off enough light to look like eyes.
There would be some holes facing in each direction.

Still thinking about this. Went to Menards while I was in Antigo today and do you think you could find sets of pure red????? They had some but of course the ones that were on sale or cheaper only came in clear, mulit color, green and blue !!

What gives with that?????

So that might help with the night predators but I think my predators are fox and they come during the day

So back to the drawing board for the daytime preds !!

CC glad you got your plumbing problem solved !!! That is one of the worst parts of homeownership.

Can't remember what else I was going to say, took my pill, won't be long now !!!

Oh, I remember what I was going to say or should I say ask.

Does anyone on here use Purina Layena ? Or Purina Omolene ?

I guess they have pink bags out now or the Breast Cance Awareness.

If anyone wouldn't mind if they aren't going to use them I would love to have them.
I would gladly pay for shipping on them.
Since I am a BC survivor I would love to make a few totes with them to bring my eggs to town etc. Shopping bags etc.

I was also thinking about making tote bags out of any other feed bags, bird seed bags, dog & cat food bags, whatever as long as they are they tarp like material.

I was thinking about making the dog & Cat food ones for the local animal shelters for them to sell to support the shelter. They decided to keep the Forest County Humane Society open for now but they can use all the help they can get. I figure it would be a way I could help out without digging to deep into my pockets.

So if anyone has bags or wouldn't mind collecting them for me just let me know. PM me would be great.

Thanks all

Sandi

We had a quickie Venzun meal tonight too !!! NO DH did not get a deer. His boss gave him a sausage and some brats or italians or ???
I fried up some potatoes, onions, with a bit of fresh garlic, spike (use that for everything now) then added up chunks of the venzun sausage ring.
I have to admit, it didn't taste gamey at all. I would have it again.

My Aunt gave my Mom a tip for cooking Venzun roast once. I remember it tasting pretty good. You put the V roast in with a Pork roast. Lay strips of beacon over the top of each roast then bake it of course.
The gravy was delicious.
Oh, on my way home tonight I saw my first ever Buck on the side of the road. I've never seen one up close just at the side of the road before. Must have been a good one cause it had to many thingys to count. Forget what you call them, spikes? Or are spikes just the small ones??

I know the whole thing is a rack right ?

Oh, Cind, Yes I was talking about Dancing with the Stars. When I said looks like CB is gonna be gone next I meant Chaz Bono, Chers Son.
Sure enough he was voted off.

Wow Celtic Chick that pictue is nice. Your chickens look sooo relaxed. And bigz yours sound very content too. Glad they are laying blue eggs for you now. Do we havve a 'new' cheese thread. lol I am just getting use dto the 'old' one.

It is a real joy to watch my chickens now since last week when I got rid of the roosters. The are all starting to roam all over the yard and play with each other and stuff. Its fun to watch. Before I think they were hiding in the coop from the roosters.

FT I think Hangin Wit My Peeps feeds Layena. I like those pink bags. I bet she would save you some. I dont feed my chickens that any more, I dont think its good food.

TO glad your chickens are getting organized.

I am working in that direction. WCC I think you mentioned a winterizing project te other day. too.

Yeay I was remodelling my lil coop, tore the insides out, started a brick floor and am putting scrap 1" strips of wood for siding on it. Ten I saw a nail sticking out and got lazy and just thought I would pound it in. Yup there goes my 6 ft by 3 ft window. Luucky I have a duplicate, it will just take a bit more time to replace though. The whole coop is only 6 X 6 approximately. I hope there is no wind tonight. The window is in a thousand pieces but hasnt fallen. I am planning on cleaning that up in the morning seeing how it was getting dark out when it happened.
