Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

OK--done reading--I think I might have to make hashbrowns for breakfast too! Thanks DrH for putting that into my head! My fingers dont want to type today at all...DrH--you still havent told me which egg hatched the banty or the blue one. That surprise egg seemed too large for a banty...are you sure it isnt a duck?

That is what I truly thought it was...now I have seen Roadrunner laying in that spot so perhaps it is one of hers? She is a smaller chicken...her father was the OEG banty I got from H&R. I will try to get some pics today when I go outside (procrastinating here) Any Blue Andalusians Would have hatched out of a white egg...I need to know what the marking on the egg was though to know which it could be. It is funny that you "have" B Copper Marans...I dont have any of those! I do have cuckoo marans though...they would have been labeled with a B.

AngieB--the reason I put a light in with some of my birds is because the wheaten Ameraucana seemed to be the one that is cold. She warmed up and now is back on the roost with the others. The little blue banty Ameracauna is the one hogging up the warm spot now! DrH--he vould have been the Daddy of one of yours marked B...he's pretty little but I know he does TRY!

At our family get together my SIL brought one of those big veggie trays that you get at the store. After I finished it up I thought that the base would be fantastic in the incubataor! It has lots of compartments and fits inside really well. My plan is to group same marked eggs together so I KNOW which chick is which and then band them with zip ties like H&R does. Oh oh...would this count as "counting my chicks before the eggs hatch" How about counting them before they are even layed? LOL--nope, guess it doesnt count...

OK--time to get my coveralls on and head out to the frozen tundra...the porch gauge says 28* the front porch says 6.4* yeah, I'm going by the front porch one! Have a fantastic day---enjoy the sun...rain

Yes DrHa... Can you record some chicken clucks for me to play to my new babies?! Could you perhaps dress up in a chicken costume with your Robe on top, and send that pic along? I want the babies to visualize mommy with the clucking sounds...

Good Morning!

FT - The track is an old aluminum type storm window that I took apart. The actual door is 1/8" weather proof T-111 (kind of a composite material). Nothing fancy but very sturdy, very easy and relatively light. I have not given up on making it motorized... Just a few minor glitches...LOL It was 23 degrees warmer in the coop than outside with the pop door closed last night!

I'm in for an April Fools Hatch.... Does that mean we set them to Hatch on the 1st or actually set them on the 1st?

Ok, I get it now. It looked at first like the frame from an aluminum door. You know the trim on the door frame. I can see why you would need the 1/8" thin door material if you are using a window frame. Right now we are just covering our door with a plastic pan at night. His concocksion not mine ! Only been two years that it's been that way.

Hey Tomski, if you breed Bert with those Barred Rock hens you will get sex link chicks.

Wally one of my BR roos has been huddled up and shivering the last two days....all the others are less active and seem to be cold but hes the only one that is acting like its affecting him. Do you ever have one chicken that seems more affected by the cold then others? Or should I be worried this is a symptom of something else? I had someone email me about re homing him but told her I wanted to wait and make sure hes ok.

Poor guy. I have two hens that I brought into the house because they were acting cold. They are still in !!! They both had feather loss due to Roosters and one had a few lice on her. Their feathers are growing in nicely and they are doing great. Now just need to wait till the weather warms up to put them back out.
I see one of my Easter Egger hens has started laying. Too bad she has a slighly crooked beak. I won't breed anything that has a crooked beak etc. But the eggs will be good for selling !!

I can't remember Angie, did you put a heat lamp out in your coop?

Bf4, have you been reading really old posts on here? I think before last year's Bigz's bash, we were discussing DrH showing up in a chicken costume, sorta like our very own mascot.

I'll take rain any day over this cold & snow junk. You're having a heat wave out by you. It's 2* over here. Brrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went out and checked over one of my light (golden) colored hens figuring it would be easier to see anything on her-nothing except pink skin and white under fluff. I took a look at Wally the roo-same thing-I see nothing. (looked under the wings, around their vent, and their neck.
I am seriously thinking its the cold. I put the heat lamp out there since he was shivering-he wont stay under it, he wants to go sit in the ray of sunshine. Last night, thinking I was being preventative, I put vaseline on his wattle and comb (I tried on my other roo but he wasnt having any of it) and today the tips of Wallys comb and wattles look yellow-ish-does this mean he has frostbite? Argh!!!
I keep telling them to hold on as this weeks suppossed to be warmer. :p Im not sure what else to do for him. He is liking the whole being held and snuggling up but my tush is now freezzzzzing and fingers are numb. Not sure if antibiotics would be a good idea-hate giving medicine unneccesarily...and wouldnt even begin to know what to give him anyhow. I dont really have a place to bring him inside-and thinking that would be worse as he would need to slowly be reintroduced and could have issues with the two roos if I seperated them.

Angie,
Do you still have the pen you put Hansel in ? Maybe put Wally in there and move it close to the heat light. Maybe make some scrambled or hard boilded eggs for everyone ? Serve warm !! Yum and some warm oatmeal too? Yum. Now I'm hungry !!

I think you're doing the right thing, Ang. Once he discovers the heat bulb, probably when the sun moves away, he'll go under it, or at least get closer. Chickens aren't always the sharpest knives in the drawer. And I don't think he has frostbite. Probably no mites either. They're just cold. But at least some warmer weather is on the way. If you have any, maybe put some vitamins &/or electrolytes in their water, or even a little sugar to give them an energy boost so they get active & create some body heat. HTH.

Update: it is now 9* here. Woo-hoo! DH was out plowing this AM & says it actually looks like it is melting a bit in the warm sun. Come on, spring!
