Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

OK, I am back.. for breakfast, I skipped right to lunch.. went to a Chinese buffet..

I want to clean my coops too, but I have to wait until the mud subsides.. I have to carry the Barred Rock pen away from in front of the windows on the chicken coop.. I remove the windows and pitch the pooh right into the bucket on the tractor.. I expect at least 5 buckets .

time to start another compost pile..

something must have gotten my last 5 quail.. (Note to Ski ) I asked Annie if she saw them within the last 2 days.. nope.. me either.. It is a large pen with lots of hiding places, but their food has not been touched.. and they would be coming out to sun themselves if they were in there..

I turned the #1 incubator on this morning.. It is up to temp so I added water.. just waiting to see what the humidity will be , then in goes 2 dozen muscovy and 4 BR and 2 Del eggs.
then I will start adding a few turkey eggs as they become available..

Hey all,

I'm new to the site and am in NW/Central WI (Taylor Co.) with my mini flock of six chickens that all trace their lines to my very first (and only) ordered chickens from like 14 years ago
lol.png
. It is time for new blood so I am going through price lists now to order more but can't decide what I want. The chickens I have now are ordinary sized mutt chickens. Is it possible to mix bantams in or are they too small to compete with the bigger ones? Otherwise I am looking at something more interesting. I end up turning them into pets so once they are here they are here forever unless they are a rooster and I can rehome him. Anyone want a rooster or 2? I have THREE!!

Anyway, can bantams mix or should I give up on that idea and just go with my regular sized?

Afternoon All!
Wow! I have got to stop all this spring cleaning and chores so I can keep up with y'all!!! LOL!!
Why is it the little things, like your DH buying you a dump cart/ wheel barrow, makes you fall in love with him all over again! So much for diamonds......LOL!!

Spent the morning cleaning the coop some more and I moved all the rabbits out. They are now enjoying the fresh air and sights and sounds of the great outdoors! I have then where I can see them from the house but I don't really like them there. It gets a little to hot and there is not enough shade for my liking. I have a much better location but until I can get a kennel to place their cages in, I want then easily visible,
Cali's kits have just opened their eyes. Dang they are cute things! I got the great honor to see one of the kits get out of the nest box for the fits time today. It was neat to see him scamper out of the box, take a few exploratory steps then scramble back into the box! The rest of his siblings are not quite so brave.

The coop is better but I still have more bedding to move out of it. I can only so so much in a day before I start feeling the spot where my pacemaker is. By them I'm ready for a break. I have big plans to get the coop ready for next winter so I want to be real thorough in cleaning it. I want to level the floor and pack it with leveling sand then place rubber stall mats on top. Then in the winter I can toss a boat load of shavings down and clean up will still be a breeze.

Other then that, the Girls are well and the young Gold Stars and Welsummers are ready to get out of the baby pen. I think tomorrow night will be the night to try that. I'm thinking that I might try to let Buzz out again. Maybe with the other younglings on the loose, the older hens wont mind Buzzy so much.

Well, I've got to go check the rabbits to make sure they have enough food, water and are not too hot. Then I v'e got to feed dogs and get ready for the seminar tonight.
I'll be up early tomorrow to get to the dump for for I have to wrangle chicks before we go to the second seminar. I'll probably "see" y'all tomorrow afternoon!
Have a great night and terrific weekend to those of you I miss!

BTW: Welcome to Wifi...no...no..no WiFC!! That's it!!! WiFC!!! And FEF (FunEFarm) too!

FEF-Some people mix large fowl and banties together. IMHO It really depends on the breeds of chickens. Some do well in a mixed sized flock and some do not. I myself prefer a Larger Fowl because of egg size and I also prefer the dual purpose breeds to that I have a decent table bird when the hens are done laying. I guess it all depends on what your ultimate goal is and if the breeds your are interested in will fit that goal.

Ok, I've got to go since I'm running behind...Man! I never should have sat down, not I don't want to get up...
Laters!

and to the Cheesehead thread, Fun-E-Farm! Always happy to meet another chicken lover around here.

You will most likely receive all sorts of different opinions on that subject. I personally don't like to mix the 2 sizes. Sure, they may appear to get along when you're around, but they might get really bullied when you aren't watching. I prefer not to take the chance and/or put the little ones through that kind of stress. But that is just me. HTH.

What a great day outside. I have the coop door open and the chicks play outside for a bit then all go inside and sleep then back out again lol, they sure are loving it. I brought a shovel of sand into the pen and holly cow, they all jumped right in and and started dust bathing right away. I should have took a pic. One of my Pekin ducklings isnt doing to well. I think its niacin deficiancy so I read on Metzer Farms blog that liquid vitamin B was good, so I gave a half dose of that to the duckling about 4 hours ago and it doesnt seem to be getting worse. I dont know if I'm just hoping to hard that it will be fine but it seems like it is doing a little better. Yestarday I noticed it was laying around alot and the other ducks wern't going near it. This morning I went out and it was super wobbly and falling over. It didnt seem to be eating or drinking either. So I brought it inside with me and did some searching online. I also picked up some Purina Flock Raiser and a 1 gallon waterer while I was at TSC. With this heat and how fast everyone is growing I filled their waterer like 6 times yestarday.
Oh and I'm starting to wonder if my Blue Andalusian is a roo. She/he keeps standing up straight and taking on the RIR's that I know for sure are roos, plus her/his feathers are coming in slower than the other girls. HHmmmm I think I'll take a pic and see what you guys think.

Well I better go, DH will be home any minute and I dont want him thinking I've been online all day :)

Oh and welcome to all the new people.

O thanks CC. I never heard that breed before. welcome FunEFarm you must be somewhat close to Eau Claire?

I have had problems with my bantams getting bullied and not being able to eat as much as the big girls. That is sad to see.

Thanks for the opinions. I think I'll stick with regular sized ones for now. Now, if I were starting over I would maybe get some little ones. I was delivering mail on a route I normally don't do and an Amish guy had a flock of them running around and they were so cute. But I do remember reading somewhere that someone had both but kept them separate. That is why I thought I'd ask first.

So now I am deciding whether to get some fancier rare breeds or go with my Barred Rock which I loved in my first batch but all I got were roosters.

Sunday I am going to clean coop. Give the ground another day to solidify. I need a tire for my wheelbarrow and will have hubby decide where to put the litter.
