Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well we picked up the chickens from abendroths hatchery , nice little drive from Milwaukee with the daughter . Her first comment when we went inside , man it stinks in here
roll.png
The hatchery was great they had all the orders bundle and ready to go. I didn't know they hatched 10,000 birds a week wow that blew me away. We got them home threw them in the box which I am starting to thinkk is a little big 3' x 3' and 10" deep . I wondering if it needs to be deeper . One of the chickens is pretty bossy 8 holes in the little feeder and she guards em all when all the chickens try to eat lol. I put a 250 watt bulb in only size available at farm and fleet , seems to big but the brooder box is big to. The one question i had is do you leave the red bulb on 24 hours a day or turn it out at night ?

Congrats on the new chicks.

You leave the light on 24/7. You will know if it to warm if they lay furthest away from the light or they lay with their wings spread out and not laying close to each other. On the other hand if they are to cold they will lay directly under the light and will cuddly real close to each other.
As newly hatched chicks they should start out with a temp of 90 degrees F. Then decrease the heat by 5 degrees each week until they are down to 70 degrees.
Good luck with the new little ones. I love your coop by the way.

unk....wow! Tomato Jungle! You sell all those? You must be doing something right!

DrH... Yep, you never know when that 10" 2x4 will come in handy or only 15" of fence to plug up a hole! Some people just don't get it! Yes, the coop needs cleaning, when doesn't a coop need cleaning! Last week I thought gee, mine needs cleaning....but it wasn't that long ago when it was cleaned! D@mn little dirty birds... got to learn to clean their own mess!

Glad you could use that beer... looked like a good choice to me! I like samplers... if you don't like one, no big loss, if you find one you like you may have a new fav.! In any case, it's a change of pace.

****Anyone have some plants to spare?

bl4... Sounds like they should be able to help your kitty.... sure hope so!

TO... I would love a mulberry or 2! I'll even trade you 2 roosters for 1

mxm...Any size chicken TV will be one of the coolest things you'll ever watch! The program may not change but there's always a new episode! Haven't seen a rerun yet! I bet your BP will go down a few points too!

Ken... that sucks! I would never offer to do anything for that teacher again! Let the kids in another class hatch some. And make sure it's clear what happens with the chicks and equipment after the hatch. Wonder if she treats everyone like that?

dyno....When they are real little if you feel the brooder is too big, put a piece of cardboard in and divide it. Take it out when they get bigger. 10" is not very high, in no time they will be able to go over it! A screen or wire cover should work. If the light seems too hot see if you can raise it higher. I clipped mine to a chair back once to get it higher. And yup, night is when it's coldest. If it's warm enough during the day you could turn it off. Like FT says, watch how the act.

Well, I gave Roadrunner a bath and looked her over. She looks like she went through a one sided chicken plucker! The wings seemed fine except for the tip on one side. I didn't see any rips or punctures. I think all that blood may have come from "blood feathers" in the wing tip. Wonder what happen? She's plucked on 1 side and bruised on the other. Another odd thing... the other (one or more) have been breaking and sometimes eating her eggs. She is the only one that lays true white eggs. I know chickens see color real well, but what do the have against white? My son's going to give me some golf balls, I'll see if that helps.

Guess that's it... spent way too much time typing tonight!

Night All!

No idea lol. The eggs I bought were supose to be Rouens. Out of the 6 eggs, 4 were completely shaken up inside. Then when this little booger hatched it came out yellow with a mohawk lol. So I contacted the seller and she got all defensive and pissy saying she gave me Rouen eggs. Well obviously Shifu is not a Rouen. I even told the lady I wasnt mad I just was wondering what other ducks she has because I was trying to figure out what she was. Well the lady said she only has Jumbo Pekins and Rouens so I guess Shifu is a Jumbo Pekin/Rouen mix. Which is cool with me. I just wanted more large ducks. So anyway, I have no idea what she'll lool like when she's bigger she looks nothing like all the other pekin/rouen mixes I've come across online. I'm crossing my fingers she turns white with a mowhawk, lol .

Good Sunny Morning Everyone! OK TO not smart enough to figure out how to get on the list. So it's Laura and Joe and after reading the food list the only thing I can think of is some giardinera for Cind's iti beef. Cind hope the golfballs work! Point is my go to beer but Leine's dang near ties with it. I LOVE a good lager! I like having "good stuff" can't imagine having to run somewhere and buying something everytime I need it. The future son in law does that. I keep telling him he has too much money. Yesterday I reburbished the rain cap for the wood stove with some sheet aluminum that I had. The cap had taken a couple of trips down the roof and into the driveway from pushing it off with the chimney brush. Wasn't much left but it works now! I also take it off before using the brush. Took awhile to figure that out I guess.

Here's one for Tomski Last week on the TV news WPS announced that it was raising it's rates because of reduced power usage due to energy saving devices used by it's customers. WHAT THE H8LL? Should have seen that coming but man that really corks my butt! Looks like going totally off grid is going to be the only way to go. dyno yup agree your gonna have to put a second story on that brooder box. Jim that's one thing about pie it's appropriate anytime day or night!

for fatso! Ken learning experience for sure. unk think your doing something right! I think about replys all day then when I sit down Pfft! Jack is really pushin my buttons everynight is a circus trying to get him or the chicken he picks on in the coop. Won't be long and I won't have that problem
droolin.gif
Got 4 eggs yesterday that's a record for the longest time! The new kids should start laying in June or July.
ya.gif
Waay too wet to cut holes for plants in the weed barrier yesterday. Was mentally laying out the remaining space and it doesn't look like there's gonna be room for some corn. Gonna need more fence posts next year.
th.gif
Going to get the saws up and running, cut holes in the weed barrier, get the boat ready to go, fix the run door, repack the wheel bearings on the flat bed, reorganize the pipe laying in the weeds, clean the coop, go get straw, make 25 face cord of wood, mow the lawn then after breakfast go fishin.

Good morning,

seems the weather liars might be wrong this morning,,,,,,,,hopefully,,,,a few sunny days would really be great

Now,,,,,a reminder,,,,,,today is the primary election,,,,,no matter which side you stand on in this time of WI politics,,,,please find the time to go and vote. Most of us are already worn thin with election ads and the controversy, this will continue through June no matter what, the eyes of the nation are on this state. I won't start a debate here that's for sure, but it is important that we all make use of our right to play a role in our government,,,,,get out and vote,,,or don't complain at the outcome

(this has been a public service announcement from Unk

)

bbl,,,,time to let the flock out as long as it's sunny,,,these birds are nuts, the rainy days they still pick and forage all day,,,soaking wet at night when they roost

Good Morning everyone. The articles about the horse is horrible. Whats the point in having the animals if you cant take care fo them. Heck it's as simple as giving them away to a new home.

Anyway, I need to make my to do list for today and a grocery list for DH. He actually agreed to do the gorcery shopping this week on his way home to save gas. This is the first time in 6 years he's done the full weeks worth of groceries lol. I dont even want to think about all the extra junk he's going to buy. While taking the kids down to the bus this morning I see a big turkey over at the edge if the woods. I was glad to see at least one of the local turkeys made it this year so far. I tried to look for some Morels but we dont have crap around here. Heck I havn't even seen an Elm tree since moving here. DH has become attached to some of my meat chickens, go figure. I have 5 RIR's and now he wants to keep one but doesnt want to decided which one until all the tail feathers grow out. So looks like thats 5 less birds to butcher for now. Oh well.

Does anyone know when to clip Mallard wings? I googled it but I just keep coming across how to's that dont say when.

Well I guess thats it for now. I hope everyone has a great day.
