Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good Morning Everyone. Happy Birthday Dr. H !! Sorry I started reading the pages this morning when getting the kids ready, then got side tracked and went outside. By time I got back in and sat down my youngest closed my windows so she could play pbskids. Oops. Lets see.
BL4- Glad to hear kitty is doing alittle better. I hope he is back to normal soon.

Who ever posted the duck pics, very cute. I cant wait for mine to get old enough to have babies.

EL - Your luck with your garden. I froze mine twice last year. This year I'm waiting a little longer before putting in most of my plants. As it is I went out this morning and all the buckets has an ice layer on top.

I received my 10 flowering trees from the Arbor Day foundation yestarday. I think I'll plant them today. We figured out last night that by DH driving my truck to work we will be saving approx $80 every two weeks ! So looks like he get to drive it and I'll take him. Unless I need more room then he can take his on that day. I dont remember if I said this or not, but I finally hear a crowing yestarday. I think it was one of the RIR's. One of our Mallards was flying again last night, I think she likes it lol. DH and I were talking and decided not to clip their wings and just let them fly. We figure if their happy here they'll stay otherwise if they really want to leave we wont stop them. I'm figuring since we feed them, give them treats, have multiple places for them to swim, and we have the pekins that cant fly. Maybe the Mallards wont leave us. Or at least I'm crossing my fingers.

Well I hope everyone has a nice day.

morning all you amazing, knowledgeable, helpful Cheeseheads

What a gorgeous morning, eh? You betcha! Yes, I do live close to the U.P.

(In fact, have to head that way soon for a granddaughter's graduation.)

Must Blu-kote all my girls bottoms today (and give a pasty butt another bath) to protect their poor bare bottoms and to hopefully put an end to the last of the plucking
roll.png
(for those who don't know my 4 year and a half old girls are rescues from a horrible over-crowded, nasty, situation). Their bottoms (and necks and backs, geesh) are starting to fill back in but (no pun) they still pluck at each other occasionally and one poor bare tailed beauty is still a particular target. I must do this solo because, even tho he has been wonderful with helping to build the coop, nests, etc. every time I mention actually handling the girls my hubby runs for the field!

really hoping more Blu winds up on them than on me!

you are not alone, sigh. Got up to 27o this morning but it was no surprise, sigh. We can frost and/or freeze as late as the first week of June if the full moon falls right (which is possible this year). I surely hope not but I am used to dealing with it tho and have learned enough tricks that in the past I have been asked to teach at a Master Gardener gathering.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Dr.H!!!!!

Ok so now that that frivolity is out of the way....hehehe.... I have a question for all of you Master Gardeners/Master Weed Identification People. Here is a picture or two of my front "flower bed". Or what eventually will be a front flower bed. I'm either going to plant an herb garden since I like useful plants instead of pretty plants...Useful and pretty are bonuses so herbs might be the ticket. Anyway, or some roses although this area only gets morning sun...or maybe some use-less plants like flowers and hostas....Anyway...here are my questions, I just pulled some weeds and have more to pull but I need to clean it up a little and put some form a weed killer/preventer down...What should I use and how often? Because I have two or 6 types of highly annoying weeds that grow back without fail every year. One is dandelions, the other is that chickweed stuff I think it's called. Another is a really annoying grass type plant, a few thistle things and the other two are the ones I have no idea what they are. So here, they are.:

The stuff on the bottom left corner I *think* is verigated (sp) vinca? and the other two broad leafed monsters I have no clue. So, what say you guys? How do I get rid of these so they never ever come back? The vinca? I can pull out but it comes right back and is very invasive and that broad leafed thing is uber hard to pull out and even if I do and get it's roots? it comes back every few times during the summer. If I leave it alone, I gets HUGE....

Here is a pic of the future flower bed that I just weeded:

I planted this little vine plant last year....Columbine I think...I just liked the flower it makes: I can take it out if I have to:

Also it's hard to tell but in this pic right above the vinca? are some of those grass type plant representatives:

Ok so thanks for any advice in advance!!!

Good morning everyone! Congrats on all the hatching going on around here...guess I shoulda brought my parrot pair up to Jims...maybe he could have got them to hatch a baby for me! Sheesh--I think you are pretty lucky! Are you going to pull those babies and hand feed them? THey turn into pretty nice birdies then...one more thing for you to do. But I bet Ken would LOVE to do it! LOL! I had to laugh at your "operation" comment...yeah, that is the kind I run here too. Everything running together and deciding where they want to be. Makes for happy birds anyhow.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU--HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! I was actually going to call and sing for real...but I decided not to subject you to that particular treat. Have a great day and drink a few cold ones for me!
Bears...just the thought...at the bash have DH tell the story of the bears and the beavers--a true one!
I just read 56 posts and I cant remember anything I wanted to say, as usual! The raspberry question was answered. Oh yeah...I loved the running pic of EL's DD too MXM! And the B&W of the baby! She almost looks as hugable as Cartman. Ha--I didnt know his first name was Eric...I thought Cartman was his name! Like his FIRST name! You can tell I am not a fan of that show! Speaking of TV--my DD26 has a new show she has been watching called "Shameless" OMG it is hysterical in a weird sort of way! We finished up the season last night. I dont know how long we have to wait for more episodes. THe Dad on there reminds me of DrH! LOL! The character just has to have more beard and shorter hair!

OK--I am jealous that MLH gets all that done in the first 2 hours she is up...as I read that I thought, "yeah, I have been up for 1 and a half hours and have done nothing!" I carried down a load of laundry but it is still in the kitchen...DH even fed the cats and dogs this morning! OK I better get moving so I can get to work on time...FT--get your ducks in a row! Find a sitter!
Have a great day and enjoy the sunshine! Terri O

MLH---the big leaf is burdock. Use a shovel and hack it out. Dont let it go to seed or you will have it everywhere. It is an annual and if you keep at it it wont be back next year (at least in that place) The root is edible--though I have never tried it!
THe grass looks like quack grass. IT has runners under the soil...round up will kill it if you want to go that route.
The varigated stuff is "snow on the mountain" "snow in summer" or various other names...I have it too...pull it out or dig it up andput it some where you need fill.
The viney plant is a clematis and it needs a trellis. It might go up that wire you have but is much prettier on a trellis.
When I start a new bed I like to use Preen after I get all the weeds out. It prevents new seeds from starting but doesnt hurt established plants. I sprinkle it, cover with mulch and sprinkle again. Works surprisingly well so you wont have to do much weeding!

At least you dont have Creeping Jenny! That stuff is maddening for sure! If that location only gets morning sun I doubt if perennial herbs will do well there...they need at least 6-8 hours. You might get away with annuals. The only excepting would be mint...and that is another whole problem all together! You would do better with Impatiens or some other sun/shade flower.
OK--I will stop now...

good morning,, all you people who find ice on the water.. I know your problem.. you get up too early.. stay in bed until the sun is higher and you won't see the ice..

BIL dropped off the big trap already this morning.. Now maybe I can catch something.. He told me to not use meat or I might catch cats.. I told him that around here, cats are on the list.. speaking of cats, I think our winter boarder has left.. we have no females to keep him here..

this cuppa is awful tasting today.. I just dumped whatever was left in the can for a batch and it turned out pretty weak.. I would have been better off had I just rewarmed that old coffee..
Oh well, I guess this is why God created restaurants..

BIL offered to help me plant corn and the rest of the garden again this year.. IDK about that .. by the time we were finished last year we were grumping at each other.. He has no patience . and I have certain ways I want things done,,, (like correctly !!).. we even argued about how deep to set the depth guage on the hand push planter.. then he planted the beets on top of the beans.. I guess he was getting tired.. but we had a ball !!!

today I have to pick up the two bird cages..

I still didn't make out my list for potted plants.. More pondering time..
