Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

So I went to the City Council meeting tonight and found out who my enemies are..... people who I consider friends! One used to be on the Council and once he makes up his mind there is no amount of arguing to get him to change it. One of them is the previous Mayor (who most likely called the cops on me). and another couple who I have known for years. The former council member and the older couple do not want their neighbors to have chickens since they do not take care of their property the way they should (in their eyes). I find that to be discriminatory behavior and totally irrelevant since we are not even aware if these people would even have chickens or not! The other thing that I REALLY find interesting is the couple who was previously on the Council has a son who lives in Appleton and would like to have chickens..... so apparently it is OK for THEIR son to have chickens but not their neighbor?

Anyway, the members of the Council who are on the Ordinance Committee seemed to be very friendly and willing to listen. I had one say that they would like to keep chickens too, and another who just wanted free eggs out of the deal. The Ordinance meeting will be on Aug. 14th and I left the members of the Ordinance committee with my contact info if they had any questions they would like me to address at the meeting or if they needed more information. I will REALLY need my support system at that meeting AND the council meeting after that!

Otherwise today I spent about 4 hours swimming. I needed time to be stupid so I could untangle my thoughts.

Ok time for sleep. I need to be alert tomorrow for the showdown at the Coffee house (my opposition has coffee down there AND the owner is also my opposition, the one who was in the Council).

Hi all!

DrH... Wish I didn't have so much to do today(Mon.) I would have loved to watch Warehouse 13!

vicki... SEE CHICKENS ARE SMARTER THAN WE THINK! The door was closed, the girls needed in, so she came looking for you! They think! They just for the most part don't want us to know! Might as well let Broody Butt set on those pretty orange eggs. LOL For egg eaters you want white ones anyway... just sayin' .

Judge... Yes, I would bet that was a pullet egg. They will get a little bigger every time they lay until it's full size for the breed.

maz... glad your back!

Twiz.... Awwwww But aren't they worth it?

your hens should be laying soon, and yea, the golf balls won't get them to start laying, but might give the the idea as to where.

BigZ... Good luck at the eye doc.!

Bl4... I agree with BigZ....chicken poop is mostly water and just washes away!

Bf4m....Is that 'thing" on your hen soft? hard? Is that dark spot 'scabby" looking? Dose it ooze at all when you squeeze it? Dose it smell?

OK... the pump... WE HAVE WATER!!!! dose not look like the changed the well pipe but they may have lined it. I was not up when they came and young son didn't come tell me they were here, then he went to work. They were suppose to come in the aft. but came early. They are coming back to test the water tomorrow/Tue.... we're suppose to keep the water running with hose they hooked up to flush everything. But even with that running our pressure is much better! Glad the recharged the tank to where it should be!

Chickens... all is well, Jasmine is still hanging in the coop and running to the roost when I come in. No eggs where I found them yesterday but I still seem to be "short"so I bet she found another spot

Kitten... Well, we have the little black runt boy left that got returned because their son had a reaction to him. Last night DH said it wouldn't be terrible if he stayed, After all the 2 oldest ones are 14 or so.

Good Damp Morning All! WELCOME rcat! Glad to have you join us! mazo bout time you showed up! We were worried ya know. Cind glad you have water again! I missed the season finale but got to watch it yesterday. We're on the northern edge of today's rain but looks like we'll all get some tomorrow. Gonna have to mow the weeds soon. Amy thanks for posting the recipe! It just hit me that I could have tried a quote.

Dan just don't let squinty drive, no depth persception. Vic chickens are a lot smarter than people think. That's a good example. Jim thought you were gonna say that it only encourages them to lay golf balls. TO hope you get that fox

Bl4 sounds like you have a battle brewing. Hope your/our side wins! Bf4me that almost looks like a zit. Like cind asked is it soft or hard? Go back in the posts and contact Buck Creek Chickens she'll know. That made me think of fm, bl4 have you seen her lately? How's she and her brood doin? Went out and pulled some onions for drying, got enough beans for supper and checked on everything else. Came in just drippin. and that was before 9 o'clock.

A couple of the new hens take forever to lay an egg. They'll be in a nest for hours. Yesterday I put a box fan in there so it blows across he front of the boxes. Thinkin maybe a trip to the camper this weekend if the weather cooperates.

Haven't been up there since April.

Moved my pickle jars to the storage shelf yesterday and noticed it's 4 days between batches. Think that's gonna gonna go to 2 days pretty soon. Then everyday. Cherry maters are coming now. Should do more carrots today. If so we'll have enough for us will give the rest away. Next year one row of carrots and one row of onions. Always refining. Think I'll go dig some taters for the pot roast tonight.

Got woken up at 445 this morning as a MAJOR storm came through, There is another one about to unleash right now. I am glad I have batteries in the laptop and wifi.
Well off to bed ..
Rcat, I am kinda the "official chicken enabler". If you need to find a home for your roo, I might be able to help. And if you need a laying hen.
I seem to be able to find those as well..

Maybe now I will be able to get out into my gardens and get something done! Haven't even done any canning because it's been too hot!!! Have to go buy a bushel of cukes from my favorite farmer for pickles because with this heat/rain combo all mine either didn't make it or blew up before I could pick them. Oh well, the girls are enjoying them. Surprised this bunch hasn't figured out how to open the gate and help themselves!

My sweet DH is out watering my herbs and toms right now for me so I can just curl up and nurse a very painful arm. What I get for trying to win a wrestling match with a stubborn feedsack. Oh well, good excuse to get to that book I have been trying to read. Anyone else read the book "Coop" by Michael Perry? He's a Wisconsin author and his book is subtitled " a year of poultry, pigs and parenting". It's a very entertaining tale of his move back to the country after many years and of course, chickens. Not very far into it yet but so far a very enjoyable read.

This morning I found one of my black orps stuck behind the wire cage, between it and the wall. I dont know how long she was there, but she was wobbly and weak. I brought her inside for the day to recover. The deal was sealed when the black orp cockerel, who is already mean, jumped on her as she struggled to walk to do his thing. These chickens are only 2.5 months old! Well I felt bad enough for her to bring her in. Anyhoo, I was taking her out just now to slip her back into the coop. I felt a lump on the back of her neck. It is gross. I think its a tumor of some sort. I know nothing about chicken ailments. I only know Mareks can cause tumors, so of course I start worrying if it could be that. (because that could be absolutley devastating to my flock) I took some pictures. tell me what you guys think...

BigFam-
it almost looks like a tick that is buried under the surface.. it couldn't hurt to lance it and see if anything comes out... especially that black spot
