Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I went to Madeline island for a few days and come back to 134 unread posts. Hope I'm not missing anything too exciting. Fleet farm is having a pretty good sale on chicken feed. I will be going to stock up! I'm more picky about what feed I buy in the winter, but in the summer when they're free ranging, they can eat cheap feed. The start and grow has went up to over $20 for a 50 lb bag where I work! I won't be buying from there anymore. Our own layer mash is up over $15 and you can drive 15 minutes to Clayton and get it for $11. Its crazy.

Good afternoon--that "engine talk" sure is funny Jim...shaving heads and grinding seats...OUCH! I am glad you are getting your tractor going again. I hope it works better for you that it did for DH...he had to tear down a motorcycle to get it ready for the races this weekend (they use them to get around the track area NOT to race with!) well, lots of $$$ later hae has the parts but has decided it is too much work to get it done by this weekend so he is going to just go and buy a different one!

Realistically now, he has 2 trucks plus a dump truck, 2 (soon to be 3) motorcycles and a car...how many things does he think he can drive?

So home from work for the day and should be cleaning but I just took a bunch of IB to see if I can get rid of the head and back ache! Dont know if it is just the weather, riding so long yesterday or because of basically having to LIFT my client this morning! I really did think he was going down. What a difference a few days make.

Vicki I dont know what that Poultry cal is made of...but I just spent $13(I think) for oystershell at my mill. I cant see how it could be that cheap!
Well, the flies are making me crazy again...guess I ought to hang some more tapes and get them caught. Bought some more sweet corn today at a stand I frequent. There's is way bigger than the others I have been buying (that has been subpar) and this is my last effort for sweet corn this year. If this isnt good I am not getting any more! The last 8 from the previous dozen went to the animals it was so yucky!

Back later...I hope you all are having a great day! TErri O
$4.99 for 50 lbs. Product is Poultry-cal poultry pellet blend produced by Great lakes Calcium

Afternoon All....the poultry cal is used in making, and mixing with your feed...it's the calcium you see listed on the label of your bags...not intended for replacing oyster shells....two different uses kinda.

Go ahead and use your best roo bigfam. If he is the closest to SOP it's the way to go. One can cull every mean roo in their flock, but it won't help much...the bad or (mean gene) is in the hens you are breeding...just sayin. Some might argue my point, but it's the truth. That's why folks who breed gentle roo's still end up with young mean cockerals.

Big kettle of green beans with ham and tatoes cooking....smells awful goodie.

Thank you Bigz!

I couldn't find anything about Poultry-Cal other than an ingredient list. You are such a knowledgeable chickie momma!

Can you tell me would there be any benefit if I added this to my current feed? (Nutrena layer pellets).
Also, If I can keep it clean and dry, how long is it safe to store pellets in the bags? Kind of looking at what might happen to the prices and thinking of stocking up for winter.

Really appreciate all the help I get from all you knowledgeable folks!

Nice night outside! I just got in from locking up and looking for DD26's earring in the dark with my new flashlight! Didnt find it though...
th.gif
She was riding horses with my other daughter and the horse went under a tree and her earring got caught. She is trying to learn to ride...I guess she hasnt gotten to the "steering" lesson yet!

The corn was pronounced GOOD! I cant believe it. This is the first stuff that had texture AND taste this year. I think I will be going back tomorrow for some more! Yes, our corn is $4 a dozen here too. The one time I bought and froze it I paid $1 a dozen and got 24 dozen! Any corn I have ever frozen has been disappointing to eat. I have tried so many "tried and true" methods and I would rather just buy it already frozen! It is a LOT of work to do too. The chicken was delish too. We also had black beans and rice and some cranberry from a can. I am full and now I am tired too so off to bed I go!
Sweet dreams everyone! Meeting with Peg tomorrow and heading to Palmyra Horsemen's for a day ride to Eagle for lunch and then back. We will be riding all day!

And NO DOGS are coming along either! I guess I better not read too long....Terri O--inanticipationoftomorrow

Good evening, all. Terri, I know how you feel. Yesterday I spent the entire day outside cleaning out the coop & carport, weeding the gardens and mulching the perennials. Today I had the energy of a gnat, sore shoulders and super itchy eyes. Drove me nuts! About the only productive thing I did today was strip the bed and launder everything. It was a good day for it since it was so overcast with a few on & off showers. Yes, we actually got a little more moisture down here, but it was very little. Just enough to get things muddy, but compared to what we were having (zilcho), I'll take it! I hope we get some more soon because my perennial bed on the south side of the house is looking pretty bad. I lost quite a few plants from the drought even though I only put "drought tolerant" plants on that side. The butterfly bush, weiglea, coneflowers, maximilllian sunflowers & russian sage all survived, though. Oh, and the yarrow, unfortunately. Can't seem to kill that crap no matter what I try. I think I'm just going to toss some hollyhock seeds over there in the bare spots & be done with it.

On the chickie front, I candled the broody Moosettes eggs and they all look viable except one!

I was not expecting that at all. I figured there'd be more infertile than not since the lavs are so young and Moose seems to be more miss than hit these days. Not for lack of trying, though.

So now I have to figure out what to do with even more chickens. There is plenty of room in the coop, but I'm worried on the snow days if the carport will be big enough for them all. There is a gal up north that might take some of the chicks, so that would be nice. (No, not Sandi or Vicki. At least I don't think so.....

Oh, and on another note, my sis once sent me an e-mail as we were chatting about our cats, stating that she would "never, ever" have as many cats as I do. She was always a 2 cat person because her DH is allergic to most of them. Well, a while back she acquired a cat from a resident at the nursing home she worked at. Later, she caught a feral cat inside her chicken run that had killed one of her roos. (She locked the crazy wild thing in a cage & eventually tamed it. To this day you'd never think they were the same animal). Last winter, she was feeding another feral cat and her lone surviving kitten. You guessed it, she is now up to the same number of cats as me. Wait for it.......WELL........ last night her & her DH were driving home late and saw a dark little blur on the side of the road. She got out to investigate since it was running erratically & discovered it was a tiny 4 week-ish black kitten with such a bad case of an upper respiratory infection that its eyes were pretty well glued shut. So you guessed it. She now has more cats than I do. This morning I sent her an e-mail asking how many cats she has. That's all I said, I swear, and her response? In huge caps, "shut the he!! up!" Ah, sisterly love!

See Bigfam? I told you you were just like her, only your addiction is chickens, at the moment.

Time for bed. Sweet dreams, all!

The flies here have been awful! Seems like since the weather got cooler they came out in droves. So annoying. We have been having the same issue with the corn we have been getting lately too. I have bought corn from 5 different places and they have all been yucky. One I think was field corn
sickbyc.gif
We plant and sell corn, but it got planted a little late and with the drought it is so far behind. I don't think it will be ready until the end of the month. I have orders for 60 dozen so far, so I hope it turns out!

ordered the engine overhaul kit and a new clutch plate..
Adam,, the mains were .020".  the rod bearings were .010"

I called around and found a place in Wausau to do the head..  I will take the valves etc to him and he will shave the head, grind the seats and install the valves..   Is that a deal or what ?

I am trying to get ahold of Jim to see if he has a honing tool and a ring compressor..

OK< things to do. bb;
...........jiminwisc......

Sounds like a deal to me............ I didn't get the difference in the numbers, but Adam did that's all that counts, I hope the local guy does a great job it will save you guys a great headache.
