Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Ghost, I am so sorry and I feel your frustration. The dang vet I used to take my animals to has yet to return my calls from May. Time to call somebody else!

they just have an off tummy and there is nothing serious......

I know the butterfat % is high in Normandie milk so we decided to watch the girls get milked last night. The milk from those cows looks like New York or French Vanilla ice cream...... YUMMY! I wish I was a cheesemaker sometimes..... specialty cheeses would be my niche.

for all the newbies!

I think the kids are all Faired out. They are all at home.

Not much else to say. Jim I would love to have you chit-chat with our clinic anytime. Every time the scheduler asks me what the appointment is for, I always want to tell her the most nauseating descriptive symptoms I can think of. Really, it is none of her business!

Not much important, just too hot to do anything, again. Went to Edgar yesterday and really enjoyed it. I think I like that sort of stuff more than hubby. I love watching the old machines doing their thing. Guess because I was a country girl and hubby grew up a city kid. Actually took me a while to convert him

Came home with an old egg basket from the flea market. Not as "antique" as I was looking for (one of those that has been dipped in a yellow rubber coating) but I haggled a good price. Still looking for a really old one. Anyone have a lead for me?
Noodle and Broody Butt are doin' good. That chicken cracks me up! I have never in my life seen a hen throw temper fits like her!!!
D.gif
Don't let her out when she wants? Flaps and squacks likes she's been stepped on! Open the pop hole and she squacks, flaps and LAUNCHES herself out w/o ever touching the ramp! Then turns around and comes back in for her chick. Put her and Noodle in before she's ready? She throws a fit in the cage sending everything flying! Don't open the cage fast enough? Thinks she's missing out on something the other girls are getting? You guessed it. Now it's even funnier because she is molting everywhere so when she throws a fit she disappears in a cloud of flying feathers!

Yet with all her "bravado", I can pick her up any time without any attempt to peck and she totally trusts me with Noodle. And best of all, she is a SUPER mom

Had a scare this morning. I had just let the girls out into the garden so Mom and Noodle could have the run for a while in peace and come back into the house when I saw a large shadow fall over over the window and travel toward the coop! I hit the porch just in time to see a large hawk land in the top of a tree just behind the garden cottage which is only yards from the coop/run!!!
ep.gif
I never broke stride toward the run.
fl.gif
There was Momma, frozen and growling like crazy with little Noodle directly behind her, down in hole, next to the coop, actually buried in the straw, lying so flat I had to really look to even see it!
yesss.gif
GOOD MOMMA!!!!
celebrate.gif
I chased off the hawk, let momma settle down and decided they should go play in the coop now
hugs.gif
whew!

I'm down to one egg a day, only my biggest hen, Soup, is still laying. StirFry is still re-cooping from whatever happened and I'm not sure why Crockpot isn't laying. She was off her feed for a day or two altho seems to be doing fine now. Might be molting too, just not as dramatically as Momma. This crazy weather isn't helping anything either.

Have to go check on the girls now. It's clouding up here but still pretty hot so more fresh water for everyone.

Hope your itches get better soon Jim

Ghost Rider~I know what you mean about vets. I really miss my old clinic. Never had that problem, they ALWAYS called back, followed up, etc. but the woman that bought the clinic when he retired? Lets just say the last 2 original vets just left for places unknown and even the great techs and front girls are all gone.
Don't know if I should tell you but dogs usually stop eating before they pass. It's not trying to starve to death, it's just they are no longer hungry because things are beginning to shut down. Know from my time as a vet tech and from personal experience with my own beloved "best friend" that passed from a failing heart a couple years ago as well as helping others with their loved ones.

Ty I know that is most likely the case, but I'm so frustrated waiting for call backs, sheesh for all I have paid them ppl over the last 20 years I own the fricken clinic............... a call back isn't so dam much to ask.
My old vet came right to my house for my dogs, horses, pigs whatever, always called me back asap, and was the best dam vet I ever had.... problem being he got side tracked with money..big money big AG, now he switched to just big farm checks with cows, RBGH shots, and farm surgeries, ........... lot more money in it for him.............. he was also way cheaper than the new place, but they are better than the other option/clinic who has new vets with no experience and when I have had to use them they know nothing, usually I know more than they do, but I can't do x rays, ultrsounds.blood tests.......... Normally I treat everything herbally, but when I suspect tests must be done, like now it's to the vet we go.............. so I know exactly whats wrong and what to treat for............. like when my Tiggy got cancer 3 years ago, The vet removed the tumor, and I treated with herbals and holistic meds, went away for 2 1/2 years the vet gave her 5 months maybe !! he couldn't get it all and wanted to do Chemo on a 11 year old dog......I said H_ _L NO....... arggggg Money grubbing AH's, it would have probably killed her in 5 months for sure, but because I don't trust vets/Dr's and there methods I at least got 2 1/2 more years and counting with her, though her time is coming close now, a month or two maybe............she can't hold it anymore, can barely get up some days, is still eating good, and looking ok all but lumpy............. Every morning I worry she will be just gone next the bed, but she's a tough old girl. Now my bugsy is a thin dog never could wieght on him topped out at 65 lbs and the vert wanted him that weight...... well now he has lost almost 20 lbs I bet, in the last 3 weeks, and he WILL NOT EAT !! ANYTHING, i EVEN TRIED BANANA BREAD, One of his favorites sweet treats..... no deal, he is not drinking much either, he asked to go out 2 times today.............. I hate seeing him suffer if I new he was close to his end I would do it humanly and quickly so he doesn't suffer, but No the vet won't even call me back.........GGGGGGGggggggrrrrrrrrrrr :barnie :he .

Evening All...LOL CC dang straight...we gotter cranked up! Come on boys! Suzie wants to know if you have a fav? just wonderin

It was a joy to go north of here again...Placed two baits and one is hit....my daughter and her fiance helped me out today...I'm thankful for that. Next week will be more work with the set-up.....cind I promise you a stick of summer if the hunt turns out to be a success...if it fits, it ships.

Suzie did 15 pints of salsa today...looks good and tastes better than store bought.

Stay Safe....bigz

Evening all!
Just getting caught up on the happenings here....DH and I went to see ParaNorman today. It was an okay movie. Not the best not the worst, but it moved well and was funny in places. I even jumped at a "suspenseful" scene! LOL! Over all with the pizza and the movie, it was a nice time with DH. I want to see Hotel Transylvania and Frankenweenie then those movies come out.

The Girls are doing well and the pullets are getting big. DH culled the BO pullet yesterday. She is in a better place and healthy and happily chasing bugs...

The Rabbits are great too. Elvis helped me with chores today. Man oh man is he a sweet dude. He loves to cuddle too. Still searching for an Elvis costume for him. I might have to get a bird "flight suit" and Bedazzled it and male a collar for it if I can't find a costume.

Well, that is about it. The hatches are all battened down for the "rain" we're supposed to get tonight.

Night all!!

Hello fellonw chickenheads!!!

Happy (belated) birthday Tomski and FT!!!

Peekachu mounted his first hen tonight (that Ive seen) when he was done doing his thing-he ran like HE$$
lau.gif
Hes still intimidated by the hens!!!

So what characteristics in a cockeral make for a nice roo? all 3 of mine are timid but let me stroke their cheeks when roosting, one is more curious, another is more timid,...what behaviors around you and the hens have resulted in a good roo? Timid? more curious? scared of the hens when young? anything at all that I can look for? I know one article someone posted recently said to look for the roo to do the lil mating dance before mounting-so watching for that. Any other suggestions?

Tonight both my EE'r and my S Favorrole babies wanted to strectch their necks out and snugggle up to me tonight-cooing-so sweet!! I LOVE CHICKENS! (just sayin')

So sorry to hear that Tiki
sad.png

My silly red star "No Name" performed quite a feat today that I didn't realize was possible- she flew up on the outside of the egg box, up into the top edge of the open door, up onto the roof of the coop, and then over ft to the top of a 6ft wall. She sat there for about 10 seconds and then jumped off the other side!! I was shocked, but she seemed to love the freedom, lol

Off to the chiropractor tomorrow morning. Wednesday he told me he doesn't think there is much he can do for me yet, and I should see a rheumatologist. H thinks it might be fibromyalgia? I thought I was too young for all of this
hit.gif

Well enough of my pity party!

The kids and I are VERY excited to be picking up two Wheaten Ameracauna hens Sunday. Can't wait!
Hope you are all well- Good Night

Judge- I've hard Rhuematoid Arthritis since I was 16 and Fibro (which kind of goes along with it). It is a process and I came to know a lot through it. I wish you luck.

Angie..depends on your goals...really...if you care about the SOP, then you need to keep that in front of your mind. If a happy flock is what you want, then that decision is also at hand. You can do it better than anyone can tell you...hope that helps..really!

OK..time for a plug for my farm market guy, he is just south of clintonville on hyw 45....he is a big player, but most of all a fair guy and not out to do anything but help the family stock up....tell him Brent from Marion said that you would give me a deal....Terri was on the phone for a order of 200 doz sweet corn, while that's a stretch....he's the real guy for a deal....his green peppers are beautiful...cutters that beat any store bought pepper for a good deal....cabbage, mellons and so much more....it's his good life.....don't stop by the farm market in front...go back to the pole barn in the rear after 9.30am mon- sat....or if you want to truck a profit...be nice...i sent you....call (715) 823-4398...he is heaven sent. Be nice....I said that, right? He is worth your time. God is Good.
