yummmmm pears!

we didnt get any pears this year after the 80 degree march and the 15 degree april hard on flowers.

we normally get 2 bushel from each of 4 trees.

will have to make last years canning last longer.

Good cool morning! AAHHHHH! Funny you should mention pears JJ; I was just outside with the dogs and noticed 5 or 6 very nice pears still on my back tree. I am thinkg I will get the fruit plucker out today and see if I can reach them...I am not a big pear fan so of course my two trees were loaded this year! Most just fall and become nice forage for the geese and chickens. Those geese are wonderful that way...before I let the birds into the yard the wasps used to invade the fallen fruit and we were always getting stung. Apparently the ducks LOVE wasps and they eat them up if ever the geese miss a pear and it goes rotten! The chickens dont mind a pear snack either! I was thinking about a fruit salad....

So the horses came in fine last night. I really didnt want to leave them out all night just in case...
Tried to get DS23 up when I got up this morning so I can take him round to gather job apps. I am hoping he finds something QUICK! He has been respectful thus far since coming home but DH is getting on my nerves with his complaining! Like the only thing I have to do all day is ride herd on the boy to get a job! SHEESH. Oh, I think I am hearing movement upstairs....

Cind--I will tell ya the same thing that I told Jim...we cant wish if we dont know! (as for the remembering part...you ARE kidding right?)

Anyhow--hope your day was fun! Or at least a little bit special!

HE IS UP! Not too bad...at least with him here I dont have to be the one to put the trash and recycling out!

CC I am betting that the bird your DH saw was an owl. I have been hearing the GH ones here for a few weeks already...I think that means an early winter? I usually dont hear them calling until November or so. I caught one in one of my live traps once. It was hunched down and I thought it was a cat at first; then it picked its head up ans swiveled it to look at me with those HUGE eyes! Gave me the chills for sure. What a magnificent bird! It was cool to see one up so close. My neighbor said that it probably beat me back to the farm after I released it...maybe.

Gotta find shoes to head to town...I trashed my tennies working on that fence...shoulda worn my boots...oh well.

Well Shandy's condition is deteriorating very quickly. This is some sort of degenerative situation not a simple wrench of the hip. (Merricks? Who knows...) She's been doing the front/back splits for three days now. Her legs aren't stiff they just always settle like that. If I put them in normal chickie sitting down position they make their way into the right leg full extended out front and the left leg stretched out back. My interactions with her today are finally indicating discomfort as she was pecking at the leg in front. I don't want to witness this beautiful creature hit any new lows. Never once throughout this whole thing has she ever shown improvement. So when hubby gets home he'll as kindly as possible help her along into the next world. Whatcha gonna do? I've been enjoying cooing at her and petting her. She closes her eyes and seems to relax when I do.

DrH, I filled my barrel with concrete to about 4 inches from the top.. the empty space at the top was handy for carrying things, like tools etc.. you could fill yours with sand/dirt,, and you could put your rod lower if you want.. but then you would HAVE to attach the 3rd arm to keep it from tipping over.. You could even poke a hole out the back of the barrel and anchor a chain end hook for skidding logs.. I welded a chain end to the top of my bucket for lifting things with a chain.. very handy place for it.. btw with the stabilizer bars, the barrel could not settle. the weight would be on the stabilizer bars,,, not the hydraulics...

Hey...those that use sevin dust.... is it safe around chicks? Noticed I might have one chicken with the start of what might be scaly legs so want to treat her and the coop right away but my darn BO broody is due early next week.Want to make sure it wont hurt them?

about the scaly leg mites. As far as I know (which isn't a lot~hehehe) Sevin isn't the way to go for that. What you need to do is smother the buggers. I've heard several suggestions such as cooking oil (slather or dunk), vaseline, etc. I am sure the chickie gurus on here have other suggestions for you. Dust just won't get under the scales to get at the buggers.

The problem with sevin around little ones would be it's dust. They could breathe it in. Can't think that would be good. Again, any guru welcome to jump in here!

In reading on the medical emergencies pages, it says to 7 dust legs, then put some under hay in coop, then vaseline or oil up those legs. that was my original plan, but chicks are due Monday- Wednesday of next week and my new addition is not ready yet. ( DId I mention my in-laws rock... they were at a farm and fleet or such and there was a 4 x 6 plastic shed with a tiny little ding on display. They talked the manager into selling it for $100 and dropped it half assembled in our garage)
So we are going to fancy that up and put it next to the current coop/run and cut a hole in the top for birds to walk through our current coop and then a little door in the bottom so the silkies that wont walk up much of a ramp can get in. And we are going to enclose under our current coop with wire leading to this area. It will be a little harder to catch chickens for the kids, but who doesnt like some hard work!!
Now I just have to figure out who is not laying and boot them to the curb...lol

Anyway... looking for best tips for the legs with scale!

Ok, I probably wouldn't use WD40 on the hen that's on a nest, but everyone else would get doused in it. I would take the broody in the house, scrub her legs with a toothbrush and flea shampoo for dogs then coat her legs in vaseline.
I'm going to get a halter today for my little day old foal. She's gonna love that!
Also, if anyone near me needs hens or pullets I am willing to part with some. Probably my 2 yr old dark gray dorking, 3 black orpington pullets, a black cochin bantam hen, 2 black orpington hens (2 yrs old), I think that's it. And if anyone needs a rooster I have barnevelders, mottled lavender orpingtons, gold laced orpingtons, Iowa blue cross, penedsenca cross, and black, blue, lemon blue and mille fleur bantam cochin roos, for FREE.
My Freedom Ranger hen is kicking out big eggs like a rock star. Maybe I'll breed her with my Iowa Blue rooster next year and use them as my meat birds.
