Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good info everyone-thanks!

no white spots on the eggs...just that one fecal sample early fall showing small amount of roundworms.

I throw scratch out for them to dig up most mornings, I just find they don't get down much past the top 3 inches or so.

I also quit using the DE in the bedding. I do however, use it in the nest boxes...need to use it up.

Jim, a 2" bolt gun is what they use on a cow's skull to knock it out at the butcher shop before they make the neck slice. It is probably more like a 3" bolt, but it has been a while since I got a good look at it.

I am going to take a stab at making fruitcake, ( my former neighbor requested I make one)........ it is not the candied fruit type, but one that is made of dried fruits. I have the fruit marinating in some orange juice, lemon juice, and a cup of CM spiced rum...... even through two ziplocks you can smell the fruit. If it is any good I think I will make one for us here at home.

The big news here is that the oldest DD and the BF broke up, I think this time it will stick since it has now been over a week since the 'official' calling it quits.

At some point this weekend I will be getting my Christmas cookies done. Come He11 or high water!

I think if I had chickens I would use the DL method and keep the DE in the dustbaths.......

BigFam, your pervy humor has been missed.

CC, no thank you..

AngB ,, I don't turn mine over.. I just keep adding.. You are not going to get much composting during the winter.. too cold..

I started this before supper and forgot to send it.. then I went to town and played some poker,, jlust now came home and had a snack of herring and an old fashion ..
came down to turn off the puter..

Heather, seeing UnkaDan might be sight for sore eyes.. and I do mean sore ...

BL4, Mel, don't guys always break up just before Christmas ?? save a lot of money that way..

Hi All!

I kick it around and throw scratch on it.... LOL.... by it's self that sounds weird.

Nothing new. Nothing froze. All seems to be OK.

Night All!

good morning folks, amazingly enough it's above 0 !

couple of comments

Heather,,,,,one word,,,,,blindfold
also,,,,yes I have the AMs separated and I have a really nice looking k bird that I am hoping does the job this spring, IF the girls get started laying I plan to start hatching next month

Deep litter and composting,,,I started this fall with a base of mixed leaves, I toss some scratch let the birds do the turning, when the leaves were broken down (and I was out of them) I now toss some oat straw when needed, mostly under the roosts. I want this litter for the garden eventually, wood chips and shavings are not used here, mainly because they don't compost well. If things are frozen then it shows you didn't start early enough to get the "action" going,,,in warmer temps the composting should start.Wood shavings/chips zero out the nitrogen,,,hardwood better than pine, but still poor.

that link Terri posted from U of Maine is the best piece I have seen for explaining the use of lights,,,,I learned some stuff I wasn't aware of,,,,tks TO

very happy with my White Chanteclers this cold seems to not affect them or the laying at all,,,,hoping it keeps up as they are also scheduled for breeding next month

bbl off to lurk

How many day's RBerry?

IMHO I think he was just waiting for the gun season to be over with so he could hunt on the in-laws property.

The Springer has left the building! He is on his way to Rochester MN. I hope he has a wonderful life, he is a sweetie.

LOTS to do today........ so I better get at it.

Ewww good idea next fall I am going to try leaves... Do you chop them all up fine with the lawn mower? I had DH mulch the leaves all fine this year and put them on my perennials, I like the look of shredded wood on the beds, but I know it sucks the nitrogen out of the soil when it decomposes. Kind of defeats the purpose of the poo, having it on shavings and then putting in the garden... Yep I like this idea very much!

We had similar news here this was their 2nd break up last one was right after "his" B-day in the early fall and she drove him and pals to a Brewer game... Now at least she didn't have his present bought but is lamenting the fact that he was getting her a Reggie White jersey...
Oh so glad to not be a chicken and single again!

After 24+ years of counseling people on their benefits, I remember being envious of those retiring and I know that many on here have a ways to go yet, so I will try to keep it low key. But I may go nuts on here next weekend, then I'll hop back onto my roost and behave.

Darn phone won't scroll....grrrr.
We hunt here at home mostly (Belleville ) but hubby and some friends lease land in Avalanche (Westby area ) that's where the other bucks came from.
I'll be at cluck tomorrow !
Short and sweet, will write more later ~gotta pick up DS #1

good morning,  have a few minutes ..  going to meet DD#2 for breakfast,,  she gets done with her 10 P  to  10 A shift..  she is a RN at a nursing home..

BigFam,  I am here and you are asking for UnkaDan ?  what more can you want ??

going out to feed birds..  It sure is more peaceful in the chicken coop with those 20 guineas out of there..

I have a male goose for your georgia ..    Yes, people do eat goose eggs...  Annie tried to make an angel food cake with them once..  It was not good..

One year I had about 100 extra eggs..  I made up 3-egg omelets ..  stacks and stacks of them.. I fed them to the birds over a period of several days..  somewhere we have a box full of blown out goose eggs..

Arny  ,,  I do not hunt anymore..  I saw one deer like that, but it was going past like a freight train and I never took running shots.    that is one nice deer,   what part of the State do you hunt ?
