Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Another Cold Evening Again....Welcome to the cheeseheads sam....I'm not sure what you need the vet for? Angibubs has a link for sending in and having the checking of the poo for worms that is reasonable.

Yep, the bash will be here before you know it. I know the weather will be warmer for sure.

The guys at the feed mill said they would like to get a extra ton of chicken feed made ahead, but they sell so much and are so busy that it just doesn't happen....kinda good in a way...it's really fresh.

We had a redtail hawk right by the coops today. He had a cottontail rabbit (that lives under the coop) pinned on the ground and we were watching him with the binocs.....all of a sudden the rabbit gave one good fit, and ran away under the nearby spruce tree...unreal...I thought he was doomed...lucky wabbit!

Keep the fire going...bigz

Awwww Jim!!! SO cute! I miss cockatiels so much! (I had 150 at one time color breeding when I lived in Cali and had a business "Flights of Fancy") Do you had feed them? or momma raised? With having house cats now, I can't have a pet bird....someday!

Keep the fire gong for sure! BBRRRRR!
I have always had cats with birds and only this year am I having problems with it! For some reason one of our cats really likes the baby finches and when they hatch them he cat stand it until he gets them out of the cage and, well, you know...

I have now reinforced the cage by adding window screen to the sides...no more kitty snacks! (would be funny if it wasnt so sad...)

I have started the bash link--finally. Not much there but the place and the dates. It is started though...I will link to my siggy and would like it if those of you posting on other forums would also do so. Here it is!

Love the cockatiels. My son has a green cheeked conure he raised from a baby. Smartest bird ever. He is potty trained and 'goes' on command. Talks a lot, too. We have 4 cats, 3 ignore him, but the 4th is good buddies with the bird. The bird walks all over the cat and gives him massages. The cat purrs and eats it up. (Not the bird, the attention

) We have thought about breeding him, but not positive he is a he. Would need to figure out how to sex him.

Hi All!

TO... Not to say a helmet is wrong, but remember when us "old farts" were kids? By today's standards, it's a wonder we survived at all! With all the padding on playgrounds and kids, banning "tag" and other games because someone may get hurt and adults tripping over themselves with "everyone wins", I think we are raising a generation of wimps. I think a kid learns allot more with a few bumps and bruises. A seed doesn't grow unless it's out of it's shell. OK, end rant.

cuties.... congrats on being a new aunt!

Jim... awww, that ugly baby stage. LOL Congrats on selling the plucker!

Wildsam.... I have relatives up in that area! Lost track of most of them, but I'm sure there's more than there was! They are/were scattered along Hwy 63 LOL

BigZ.... Either a very smart old rabbit, or a young hawk I would say.

my2.... sounds like a real cool bird!

Nothing new here, just trying to keep the birds alive in this cold! Got to see if I can find that hunk of fat I saved for them. I threw a hunk of roast fat in the freezer last fall just in case they needed the calories..... I think it's time!

Night All.... stay warm!!!

Hi there!
Just thought I'm gonna introduce myself, since I've only been a member for not quite a year, and have mostly been swarming around in the Pekin Duck Forum, as I have duckies (my lovelies, as to my dogs the babies!).

I live in the Northwestern corner of Wisconsin, wedged between Hayward and Ladysmith (if that is at all familiar to any of you) and we (meaning my boyfriend and me) have somewhat of a hobby farm started about 2 years ago.

First, he got pheasants. Reeves and Red Golden, then added some Alaskan snow, this year some regular Ringneck and Lady Amherst. When he came along with wanting chickens too (to add to the almost 70+ birds we already had!) I told him flatout that I would get some ducks, since I ALWAYS wanted some of those.

Sooo, at the swap meet we got altogether 13 chickens, 5 turned out to be roosters that we sold, and 2 got killed, leaving us with 5 now (no clue bout their breed, it's just not my thing). A week later I went out and got me some duck eggs to incubate, having 2 hatch. Both turned out to be Rouen males (although I first thought they're females. lol) and I went out to get me a couple of Pekins too. One Rouen male was sickly and needed extra care and being separated while the others tried picking on him. So I got him a Khaki Campbell as companion. Turns out we had 3 guys (the Rouens and one Pekin) so I was on the search for more females, as that ration is not a good one.

In October I finally found them on Craigslist, in pretty bad conditions, extremely skiddish, filthy, skinny and malnourished. I initially only wanted to add 2 more females, but they had to give up all of their ducks and were afraid that someone would "delete and eat" their one deformed Pekin (which I named Sheila), so I took her home too as I do have a very soft heart for all animals abused (see to my 4 babies lol).

Since having my lovelies my boyfriend fell in love with their funny characters and loves them almost more than I do now! Needless to say, we have LOTS of birds and some dogs, yet are all living happily together.

So NOOOW, after this somewhat lengthy introduction (sorry!), I was just wondering if anyone around knows of a vet in the area that would test pheasants, ducks and chickens? And maybe where I could get some Golden Cascade Ducks from, as I am not able and wanting to buy them from a hatchery that has a minimum of 10... I got plenty already, without adding 10 more, and with my luck, probably ending up with more males AGAIN! lol. Any and all info would be appreciated...!
I know all the area up here as I graduated from Winter and did some high school in Hayward. Also lived in Radisson, Couderay, Exeland area with my ex husband. Currently live south of Bruce. Nice to know some other chicken lovers in my area. I am currently raising BLRW, SS, BO, and a few others including some Bantams. Glad you introduced yourself.

Bringing up fat, I purchased a half a pig last fall and they give me a bag of ground fat. I'm assuming I can give it to them like suet to the birds? If so I'll thaw it and divide it amongst them. It's quite a huge bag, probably 10 lbs.

or you can make your own suet when you render it..
I would not thaw it other wise..just toss a chunk out every now and then for them to find in the snow..it will keep them occupied and busy.

It's a huge frozen ball, maybe I can cut it with my electric knife? Good idea though thank you.
