Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Wildsam-Welcome to the forum! I live a lil closer to you than most on here! (Amery) As far as testing, what kind of testing are you wanting done? IF you can do the blood samples yourself, and collect fecal samples, there is a state lab that you can send it to for testing at a very reasonable price (They won't take in live animals): http://www.wvdl.wisc.edu/

Love the cockatiels. My son has a green cheeked conure he raised from a baby. Smartest bird ever. He is potty trained and 'goes' on command. Talks a lot, too. We have 4 cats, 3 ignore him, but the 4th is good buddies with the bird. The bird walks all over the cat and gives him massages. The cat purrs and eats it up. (Not the bird, the attention

) We have thought about breeding him, but not positive he is a he. Would need to figure out how to sex him.

there is a place in Florida I believe that you can send in a drop of blood to and they will DNA the bird. We did that to figure out what sex our white pea was at 3 months- a boy.

Not so cold here this morning but that will change as the day goes on. We got about 4.5" of snow over night so DH is out doing removal- hopefully they finish before the temps start dropping off- it is light and fluffy so there will be drifting going on of sure.

Going to get our 2nd incubator going this morning to start another group of eggs- our cuckoo Marans rooster died at the end of the last really cold spell so we are collecting from the hens and hope to hatch out some more.

Added 2 nest boxes into the rabbits-1 Cali doe and our French Angora doe are expecting

towards the end of the week. This will be the 3rd litter for the Cali- hopefully she won't lose this one and the 1st for the FA....the kids are really hoping that she does good too!

DS(8) is at his first sleep over so we'll see how he did when we go pick him up. It's always different when one of the kids is gone over night.

Quick question for those living in the Northern part of the state. I am thinking of taking a road trip up to see the ice caves. Any recommendations on what vehicle to drive, road conditions, anything else to take a peak at while I am up there, etc, etc, etc..... I have done a lot of googling about what to bring, but since I have never been that far North, I have no idea what kids of roads to expect and so on.

Wildsam welcome!

Made the Banana cream pie, there are 2 slices left. I was a good girl and only had 1/2 of a full slice.

The dogs and cats were spoiled this morning. Last time I was at the butcher I picked up beef liver for them. Jinx was the only cat to really enjoy her treat, the rest of the cats were indifferent. The dogs of course acted like I was feeding them a meal of bacon......

Jim, your baby birds are very cute. Someday when I no longer have the budgies I think I would like a Cockatiel or two.

Time for a refill. This snow can stop any time now.

good morning,, procrastinating going outside.. spent awhile google mapping a route to dorchester to drop off the geese on Tuesday.. turns out to quite a simple route.. thanks Dan for the addy .

bl4 we have parakeets also.. have 4 new babies from them .. nobody around here takes time to play with the birds.. so there are none that are very tame ..

snowing like heII here today.. I didn't expect that .. I hope it is not enough to plow.. too cold to ride around on a tractor ..

frozen meat/fat + chain saw = smaller chunks..

cuppa is long gone, time to dress for the outside adventures ..

good morning,

just a quick note to pass along some info for Mel

I credit you for fortitude in wanting to make the trek to see the ice caves and take pictures of them,,,rare beauty for sure

as to vehicle for the trip,,,,dependable is the key I think the roads themselves are kept clear and drivable with the exception of any winter storms that involve "lake affect" that along with these nasty low temps this winter seems to be made of

There are a few stretches of US2 that are pretty desolate but are kept clean and safe to travel, keep in mind there are most likely many areas with no cell towers,,,,

not something I plan to do at this late in life but wish I would have since it is so close and they are pretty amazing!

watch the weather for a window and good luck,,,,,what else to do or see? well the bubble heads are out in force,,,cross county skiers are pretty happy with the trail conditions and there is lots of "local color" in the bars this time of year

ETA: depending on dates and weather you might consider going even farther north (if you have completely lost your mind) and check out the winter carnival at Michigan Tech in Houghton,,,excellent snow statues (these I have seen a few times)

Afternoon All....yep, just watched a PBS special on the caves and how do the extreme cold this year access is quite safe. Unk, you could go during open water and take one of those kayak boats and tool around in the caves. At least one wouldn't have to walk.

I still am rubbing my head Cind. It was a huge mature redtail that coulda done the wabbit in with just it's talons....I wonder if they catch stuff for fun and let it get away if they aren't hungry? He had that thing pinned for quite awhile and just held it down....strange for sure.

Pro bowl tonight.....sure would be fun in Hawaii, eh!

Thanks for posting the link again angiebubs.

We had starving wild turkeys in the front yesterday eating red berries off a European cranberry bush we have next to the sidewalk in front, prolly less than 20ft from the house. They all won't make it this winter, and I can't afford to feed them. I drew a tag for the first season in April. I wonder what they will weigh after this weather?

Stay Safe...bigz

A customer at work yesterday said he has a flock of Turkeys that come into his feeders every day. Some of them perch on his feeders and break them. He said he may just shoot some. I informed him that I would love to eat all of the illegal turkey that he can supply.
We have some beautiful alfalfa bales from Canada for the horses. My husband says their too rich, so we've been letting the deer eat on them.

Thanks so much for the great welcome here and also the link from Angiebubs (I think we met on another thread tho, right?) and would be really happy to connect with some BYC'ers up here in the Northwoods!

Yup, I live in Radisson so heading down to Bruce or up to Hayward is rarely a problem, if the road conditions allow it. Lol.

Just been outside and took some if the snow he just plowed off the driveway and covered the topper completely again against the upcoming couple of freezing cold days brrr. Don't want them to huddle under the heat lamps with the chicks and it is drafting in when I can prevent that and actually keep heat IN, and it's all free and laying around and coming down anyways...

Would like to see the ice caves too but barely got time, have to keep the (inside) wood stove fed so that we're all staying warm. Plus with those gas prices right now can't really afford to go on a fun trip like that :(

And yes, will see about the bash this year once we get closer to the date and see if it is manageable to make it. But with such an anti-social boyfriend I don't really have much hope :( but I will try for sure!

So stay warm and out of the still faking snow everyone! Really wish it would slowly start getting warmer. And maybe the temps staying above 0 this upcoming week (after the deep freeze) is a sign?! Sure hope so!

Oops. Forgot to answer a question.

@Angiebubs: we need to get all our pheasants tested (blood test I think) before we can breed & sell them or their babies/eggs. And he just wants to make sure that they're all okay so not sure what he wants tested for the ducks.

For NPIP testing for State..click on the link in my signature..it will take you right to it and find your county..all the info you need should be right there.

All other testing can be ordered from there too and your inspection scheduled.
