Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

This is just freakin me out man! Just got the new printer workin. Now Biz think you know me well enough to KNOW the skins were on. That's where all the nutritrion and flavor is after all. They were scrump-to-us! Did just salt for L

but I had to do a cajun spice. Don't eat anymore salt than absolutley necessary. What did people do before lectricity and indoor plumbin? Oh ya they survived without it.

Hey All,
I saw an ad online for a place near us that is offering some standard cochin chicks, Vowerks, Nankins and LB leghorns..
Any one know about those? And any hints on sexing straight run?

Thanks
Carol

Stay warm people!

Good Freakin Cold Morning to all!

I have a couple of minutes in between taking care of chickens and running to work, which is rare. Man, what the hell happened to December weather? You know, that gradual decent into hellish January and February? The birds seem to be handling it but I think they are getting familiarized with the concept of being "all cooped up"...every morning all the waterers are frozen granite and when I bring back warm water to the hen house those birds hit that waterer like they haven't had a drink in weeks. And man are they going through the feed. When they were free-ranging it was hard to tell how much they were scrounging out there but it must have been alot.

I open the chicken door in the coop and they all go charging outside like they're late for work, but it doesn't last long. I'm sure at night they're dreaming of grass, bugs, worms and warmth.

So Doc I guess I shouldn't complain it's only -2 here!!!! I can't wait to get paid so I can get a heater for that dang waterer...then I'll have it made in the shade.

Hurley there's plenty of plans for automated coop doors on this site...this spring I'm bound and determined to get mine done. I hate going someplace and knowing we won't be back until way after dark and those birds are going to have to sit in an open coop in prime fox, racoon and coyote country. I know a coyote picked off a couple this year, and now that we've got snow on the ground I see there tracks and scat everywhere adjacent to the barn.

Stay warm y'all...I hear around this neck of the woods we're going to have a heat wave today. All the way up to 22!

Oh DrH--ya only beat me by a few mins today...'course by the time I am done writing my "book" it will be much later! Yup--we have a heat wave here -6! DD had to be at the Dr's office at 8 this morning and that Ranger fired right up...unlike yours Bigz. I was glad because I need mine to go to the feed mill today. My girls are going through feed like crazy with this cold weather! I probably should have downsized a bit this fall...kinda forgot how much they eat in the winter! I had to scold them yesterday...only 17 eggs out of 40 some hens! The funny part is the two that are outside without light lay every day! I think I have a bunch of freeloaders going right now.

BBB--I am going to get some of my yucky bales of hay out and make a little windbreak type thing in the dooryard for my ducks that dont want to go inside. (dumb birds) Did yours go in automatically or did you have to heard them in and lock them in for a bit? I really with I had cleaned out the middle part of the coop and put a ceiling in while it was a bit warmer...then I would catch up those silly turkeys that are STILL roosting in the trees at night and get them inside too. Maybe they are closer to wild ones that I think...those birds sleep in trees so why not mine--right? Yeah...but the guineas are right up there with them!

They have GOT to be chilly!

First frozen pipes of the year here. No hot water for a shower this morning! All the other hot water is working...just not the shower--not meant to be I guess. I am wondering if I get some heat tapes if that will work on those pipes...anyone have any experience with them? So they really suck power?

I hope everyone that has to go out today warms up their car really well--baby it's COLD out there! Stay warm and as always--have a fantastic day! Terri O

(PS) Our trails are open here I guess--listened to those foolish people out riding last night! BRRRR!

Terri O- my friend who lives near Freeport took her arab mare out last night in a blanket, and let her other mare out too, and rode around in the corn field behind their house...
Sounds like FUN!!!
Too cold for this gal though.. brrrrr

No ideas on my chicken types I want to get/??

Back on again after going through a major puter ordeal to get the new printer up. Only took about 20hrs. Started last night turned out Yahoo sent an up date for their tool bar that was messing with everything and ended up today finally being able to download a users manual for it. They don't come with one. 2 calls to the local help line and one to Staples and many a frustrating hour spent trying to figure out why I'm so stupid. Good thing I've got nothin but time cause I'm gonna need it. Up at 4:30 because it was bothering me. But it turned out it wasn't just me so now I feel better.

TO is the shower hot water pipe insulated? You might be able to get by just wrapping it with insulation if not the heat tapes I use don't seem to draw much power and you could put it on a timer for the coldest time of the AM 3-5 maybe. Cold showers that takes me back. Hey I was talkin about my Army days! Still haven't found an answer to my question of why hot water freezes faster than cold. I think it's because there isn't as much oxygen in it. An inquireing mind wants to know. BBCB glad you found a moment to stop in and report. You know how I worry! Ya your right about the weather Jan and Feb are comin! But after that is Mar, Apr, May, June....

Know what you mean about them hittin the thin water in the AM and their increased store bought food intake. They get warm treats and cracked corn for added heat generation plus the heat lamps seems to be the ticket. Need some lunch and more wood brought in. Dang cats are using the same old excuse. No thumbs! Lazy pukes!

Doc I'm contemplating heat lamps for the coop, I had one in last year, but I am so worried about a fire. I think I need to get past that and help these birds out...I've got a few that are moving really slow and dont have alot of enthusiasm. Glad you got your puter issues fixed. Just remember what my Dad told me once: "Computers are NOT your friends!"

WIChookchick I've been having great luck with my ameraucanas and ameraucana crosses. They are still laying consistently this winter and seem very hardy. My rooster Elvis is a purebred and hes a terrific roo. Very laid back and doesn't tear up the girls...I don't worry about him like I used to worry about Jerry Lee, my Buff Orp rooster that went into the pot. I've got a great breeder if you're so inclined. I love my RIR and my buff Orp hen too. That being said, I'm going to be getting some cochins this spring, they seem terrific. I think H&R has some beautiful ones, she might have more info.

Dandelion Acres As far as Delawares, I'd look up the Delaware thread on the site, they can give you some direction as to good Delaware breeders. Might as well get a good bloodline that you can be sure of, and support your BYC breeders.

Stay Warm!
