Yes, I bought 2 BBS pullets from her this spring. They just started laying when I got them so I put 7 eggs into the incubator. All 7 hatched but I think 5 of the 7 are boys. So I'm not much help for you atm. Sorry.

If you are coming down to visit her sometime, please let me know. If it is ok with her, I might be able to come too? It would be nice to see you again.

Plentiful green beans here too! I blanch and then tray freeze... then all in some big plastic baggies, that way I can grab what I want when I need them... Pickled green beans sound good in a bloody mary, but I have never had much luck when it comes to canning dills. Gary love refrigerator and sticks everything in his brew jalapenos, whole garlic cloves carrots... Speak of which that is what we are digging up tonight when I get home, one was going to seed so better get the rest out of the ground soon.
Have a great day all no humidity!

Had to buy my beans, no room to plant....poor planning. Dillys are great for just munching. Beautiful Day. Took a half watermelon left overs out to the little hens last night, this morning, they had eaten all the mellon and Just left the rind and outside.....am not getting notifications from this site again....seems sporadic.

Nice Windy Sunny July Day Here....yep, if someone wants to garden for the first time, I'd recommend growing easy peasy green, yellow, and even the cranberry beans for fall shelling...they make the best bean soup ever!

No problem bl4...just thought I'd offer....I hope you take over the job for your grandkids someday...providing grandmas pickles.

Nothing new here..alot of busy garden stuff...the harvest season is worth the work for sure.

Hi All!

I let the "kids" out and about 8:00 I checked on them and they were all just outside their little coop area. I went to close them up a little after 9 and I can't find my my little white Cochin
sad.png
I hope she just got a little lost and is hiding. I hope.

I just cut into one of the worse watermelons I ever had! I was a semi-seedless. Looked and sounded near perfect when I picked it out. When I cut it the color wasn't bad but it was tough and tasteless. Guess the chickens get more than just rein this time.

Night All!

Hope you find your baby. I saw my babes out for the first time yesterday, by, out, I mean at the farthest end of the run....they were just a flapping around. It was funny to watch. The wind almost did a number on my tomatoe plants. The plants are taller than I am and heavy with fruit. Thats 5'2". The wind was bending them over, even tho they are staked. One branch, whose stem was as big around as my middle finger broke off on one plant. It had two nice size fruits on it, so they are in a paper sack going to ripen up now. It had a lot of buds on it too. Just hate it when stuff like that happens to my stuff.

. So, ya'll remember my shed that I posted...When we put the chicks in there, we had made a couple of places to roost on. The roof hangs over the sides, but has a gap between the roof and the sides. We are going to insulate the coop, and my son and I are questioning weather we should bring the insulation on the inside right up to the roof or leave an open area. He says it would not be a draft, I say it will be too much cold air coming into the coop in the winter. We are putting a door on and making a chicken door. He also does not want to cover the chicken door....could some one who knows what they are doing tell me what to do? Startingg with the kind of insulation I should use.

The type of insulation doesn't matter, just be sure to cover it with some plywood or OSB. Otherwise the chickens will eat it.

Which direction are the gaps facing, N/S or E/W-ish? I guess I would block off some of the gaps with wood but leave about 4 or 6 for ventilation. The ones you leave, you should cover with a sturdy hardware cloth (small holes) to prevent predators from entering. Does your coop have windows? If it does, you could probably get away with 4 vents/gaps, otherwise I would go with at least 6. Chickens can handle the cold better than they do the heat. And in winter, which is long around here, they will spend most of their time inside the coop. You will want it adequately ventilated so the ammonia fumes do not overwhelm them if you cannot clean out the coop as much due to bad weather & the other joys winter brings. It will also help with condensation which you do not want.

For cleaning the coop, I would recommend adding a poop board under the roosts. It can be as easy as a piece of plywood (or other board) sitting on two saw horses. Lay some empty feed bags on it & cover with some wood chips for easy cleaning. You can rake them into a bucket in summer or remove the wood chips & feed bags together in the winter (the poop will freeze to the board & make raking impossible so use the feed bags on top of the board for easy removal). Thanks go to Irish for this ingenious idea.

As for the chicken door, what do you mean by covering it? Putting a door on it? That would be a necessity to keep predators out. Be sure to close it every evening after they go in & open it in the morning. In the winter if the weather is real bad, you can just keep it closed. That will cut down on the drafts on windy winter days/nights.

Sorry I missed everyone lately... life was crazy in July but I am trying to breath a little easier now! We just got back from our vacation in DC/Virginia... civil war, presidents, museums and heat! Good time. But the neighbors watered our garden only 1 time so I am trying to heal up wilted plants now.
Trying to find time to weed too...it is crazy in all my gardens these days and not enough time to get it all done. Waiting for kids to go back to school for a tiny bit of free time!
Chickens are good.. decided that I need to get rid of all feathered feet breeds in the future... Keep getting scaly mites on only the feather footed breeds and it is lots of work...
We rescued some buff Orps from a gal near Waukesha a few weeks back who was getting harassed by neighbors for having them. She was debating if they were too much work or not,... they were about 5 weeks old... 2 girls and a boy(pretty sure) so we also have a roo available. Hate to break up the trio but we are loving the little OE bantam roo and dont want to tick him off either! Our pullets we hatched this spring are getting close to laying... now to see if we accomplished an Olive Egger... One should be.... we will see...

otherwise kids are keeping us busy with sports and summer school still. Planning a charity golf tournament for the end of the month so that is taking up lots of time at work... thats all for now.
