Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All!

Irish... you should look for a zucchini crisp recipe. I'll have to get the one we use from my daughter. My copy got "trashed" a couple of years ago.

All seems to be well..... Night All!

We have a new radio station in Waupaca. They play some decent oldies music for us old fogies and are good at getting out local info. This morning I awoke to a replay of this week's city council meeting where they discussed, among other things, backyard chickens. From what I gathered there is currently no ordinance regarding chickens and they have co-existed with residents without much fuss. Now, however, because of one person who is raising an inordinate amount of chickens and rabbits in a small space there is talk of setting up some parameters. Apparently this person is not at all willing to decrease the herd without an ordinance. There was talk of odor complaints from neighbors. Too bad one person has to be stubborn and make it difficult for their neighbors to co-exist and for others who want to raise a few chickaroos. At least they're not talking about banning chickens altogether - just controlling numbers.

maybe someone should go and talk to this guy and explain that he is going to cut his own throat and make it bad for all others to have their pets..

He has to bend a little or he will get broken ..

people like him are the reason ordinances get passed..

He can fight it, but he will lose in the long run..

There is a town in my work area, that must not have an ordinance on poultry.

As you come into town one of your 1st sights is an old house with chickens coming & going from the house. Yes, people do live there.
I have no idea how many chickens they have.

Taking a short break. Up @ 4 to take care of excess cockerels. Then taking care of a long to do list on the property. Mostly tractor work.
Great day......though we need rain soon. Tomorrow is landscaping & paper work day.

Nice August Day Today....pulled about 75 onions ...once they tip over and start to lose the dark green in the tops, it' time to get them out....not bad sized this year. That's maybe 1/3 of what's growing. More broccoli for salad and eating with salsa....I had plenty of red pepper in that batch of salsa...better than too mild though.

Enjoy...bigz

I have NEVER been able to get onions to grow. This year they didn't even peek out of the ground and I planted them twice. Last time I tried I got tiny scallions at best. I really like cooking with onions so I buy some beauties from a Hmong farmer who sets up at the Saturday Farmer's Market in Waupaca.

Someone told me that Juicy Fruit gum gets rid of groundhogs permanently because they eat it and it fowls up their digestive system so I spread a bunch out in the garden today. (Don't judge me!) On the plus side, I have the best smelling garden in town.

It appears that the Police Chief talked to him without any positive results - which was the reason he addressed it with the City Council. I could just picture him shaking his head when he was talking about it. Sounds like he didn't really want to have to ask for an ordinance. The "neighborly" chicken guy sounds like a real eejit to me!

The type of insulation doesn't matter, just be sure to cover it with some plywood or OSB. Otherwise the chickens will eat it.

Which direction are the gaps facing, N/S or E/W-ish? I guess I would block off some of the gaps with wood but leave about 4 or 6 for ventilation. The ones you leave, you should cover with a sturdy hardware cloth (small holes) to prevent predators from entering. Does your coop have windows? If it does, you could probably get away with 4 vents/gaps, otherwise I would go with at least 6. Chickens can handle the cold better than they do the heat. And in winter, which is long around here, they will spend most of their time inside the coop. You will want it adequately ventilated so the ammonia fumes do not overwhelm them if you cannot clean out the coop as much due to bad weather & the other joys winter brings. It will also help with condensation which you do not want.

For cleaning the coop, I would recommend adding a poop board under the roosts. It can be as easy as a piece of plywood (or other board) sitting on two saw horses. Lay some empty feed bags on it & cover with some wood chips for easy cleaning. You can rake them into a bucket in summer or remove the wood chips & feed bags together in the winter (the poop will freeze to the board & make raking impossible so use the feed bags on top of the board for easy removal). Thanks go to Irish for this ingenious idea.

As for the chicken door, what do you mean by covering it? Putting a door on it? That would be a necessity to keep predators out. Be sure to close it every evening after they go in & open it in the morning. In the winter if the weather is real bad, you can just keep it closed. That will cut down on the drafts on windy winter days/nights.
The gaps are on the North and South side of the shed...there is no ceiling and no insulation at this point. Just 2 x 4 and wood slats or whatever they are called. We have a window on both of those sides as well. I am concerned about drafts, seems to me anywhere the wind can come in would be a draft, yet everyone is telling me that they have to have fresh air. Probably should look at a few pictures of the inside of a coup and see if I could figure it out. We have some door, insulated, that my DS says he is going to cut to size to fit the opening that is in the shed already....have no idea if that can be done or not....sorry for the late reply, seems I am not getting notifications again...had to read thru all of them until I found one that I remember reading.

Hi All!

Firstchick... one way you could have air flow without direct wind coming in to to cover the vent from the outside using stand offs. That way it's covered but air still flows.

Nothing new.... night all!
