Hi All!

Firstchick... one way you could have air flow without direct wind coming in to to cover the vent from the outside using stand offs. That way it's covered but air still flows.

Nothing new.... night all!

What are stand offs?

Brahma has gone broody again. Both coops occupied. She will stay in the layer coop.
Not sure how successful hatch will be. Roo was young cockerel

If you are planning on putting a ceiling inside the coop, .. I would keep the insulation below the openings.. then cover the openings with screen material.. that would give you ventilation above the insulation, which you need to prevent moisture from boulding up in the attic .. screen will prevent insects and bees from entering into the attic.. bees can crawl through a 1/8 inch hole, so wire mesh would not be the material to use here..

In a small coop, you don't need much ventilation in the winter time,, just going in and out the door a couple of times a day will give you the air exchange needed.. and most coops have enough air leaks so that you do not have to provide an air exchange..

Thanks Jim...My RIR roo is as tall as my old hens, just not as fat....He clucks??? or makes some kind of noise. They come a running to me now and stand to check me out...Getting so much fun outtta these little devils, its Great.

Hey anybody close by-Waupaca to Appleton or in between have a pressure cooker they want to sell? Looking for one. 23 qt would be nice but......

Nice August Day Today....that's kinda weird Irish, cause onions are easy to grow here. Are you planting the sets or the plants?....We always grow just simple onions from sets....if your soil is heavy, it works well to lay some garden limestone in the row to help create easier growing....and also don't be afraid to shove those sets in a ways.

Love catching up here! Will try some veggie spray on the 2 with the scaley legs...on a side note...I noticed a runny poop or two in the coop today...could this be heat related or should I be concerned? Had a slight drop in eggs when it got really hot 3 weeks ago but otherwise just one of the scaley leg hens looks rough. Gave lots of fresh water today... your thoughts?

getting some first cucs from the garden and first tomatoes! YUM and we have a CSA to boot... which is good because my garden is super weedy and only getting half what I normally should. Next year will be better!! On a side note the bees look good and healthy and getting ready to add another box to them.

Onions,, If you plant the onion sets.. the small onions with no stem.. you can expect to get smaller bulbs.. they are best planted if you just want green onions to eat..
planting seeds or the started plants that you can purchase in bunches gives you larger bulbs..generally..

the best onions I ever grew were from seeds ..

I worked on my last birch stump today,, used Ollie to dig on 3 sides of it, two feet deep,, cant' quite get under it .. tomorrow I will rig up a 3 ton engine hoist chain pulley off of the tractor bucket,
If I can get a chain around that stump, it IS COMING OUT !!
then I can replace the 5 yards of dirt and drag the area smooth .. plant a little grass seed and watch it grow..

Annie picked our first cuke today..IDK how she found it among all those weeds ..
tomatoes are going wild.. It is nice to see the naturally red ones off the vine rather than those anemic ones from the super market ..
little known fact; a tomato quits ripening as soon as it is picked.. they will turn red, but they are not ripe..(store bought)

Did you know that eating a raw cucumber is just as satisfying as drinking a glass of water on a hot day ?

Did not know that about store bought tomatoes, I have some grape tomatoes that have ripen in the last couple of days,,,,I did not get to taste them tho, DGS wanted them....so being the good and best grandma, he got them. Did not know about the cukes either. Learn something new everytime I come on here....just wish I could remember what I learned.
