Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning all,

Dropped the tank heater into my water bucket so no frozen water here. Only problem is it puts off enough heat that the hens want to sit on top of the bucket lid to keep their feeties warm. Still getting 2-3 eggs out of the 5 of them most days, occasionally I will have an eggless day, but kinda expected that would be coming. Have not seen one from either of the EE hens in 3 days so they are just freeloading at this point. Ceiling of the coop was built pretty open, so I took a piece of pegboard and slid it over the area where the girls roost. I think it cut down on some of the air movement and I noticed a light dusting on it after our last snowfall so I was glad that I did. Need to seal up the huge crack at the door hinge and then I think they will be good. If I need to, I will close off more sections of the ceiling with wood, but we will see how it goes next week.

good afternoon,

eggs went back up to 14 today.

I rewarded the girls by giving their waterer a good washing and then added a cup of apple cider vinegar to 5 gals of water.

I burned up a box of old newspapers and magazines today.
I used them to start my brush pile on fire.
the fire is all burned out and almost every stick of brush is gone..

got the choke cable thawed on the tractor,. then the starter acted like it was frozen, too..but I know it isn't.. there is moisture in the transfer case and that freezes the gears which in turn keeps the motor from turning over.. I can fix it as soon as I find my engine block heater.. not today, anymore.

I am back in the house and I plan on staying in.

Yep, I dislike this time of year change...so much more fun when it's Winter to Spring.
My pullets have started laying that were hatched this Spring, and even some of the old women have been laying since their molt.....went to the feed mill yesterday and picked up 5 bags of 18% layer for $38....then I went to Fleet Farm for some other stuff I needed, and thought I would check out their layer feed that is only 16% protein .....same 5 bags woulda been $60....kinda no brainer where to buy my feed.....plus it's fresh ground from the mill and not stale feed.

Wow that's cheap how many pounds of feed is that? We've been getting 500 lbs of 18% layer for 88$ from our local feed mill.

no need to be dreaming of a white Christmas ..

One good thing about a fresh snowfall,
everything looks so clean..
and that ends all the good things about snow..

We have about 4" already and if this keeps up there should be a couple more..

Usually after a good snowfall the temp gets milder.
Not going to be so this time.. This will make plowing uncomfortable.. almost takes the fun out of it..

When I was young I used to wish for snow on my birthday.. I must be old now. It can stop any time.
I hope your birthday is not in July ..

I can remember when I was young, we would get snow that was knee deep,, regularly ..
but now I realize I was only 2 1/2 feet tall back then..

Just for S&G I put a heater in the coop plugged into a Thermacube.
It turns on at 35F and off at 45F.
It went on immediately and by the time I had picked up the 7 eggs it turned itself off already..
and again, the water was not frozen even before the heater.

Snowy Packer Sunday to everyone...GO PACK!

My feed was 250 lbs cd, so if I woulda bought 500lbs ($76), I woulda paid $12 less than you paid...kinda like 75lbs for free....LOL! I've been using the same feed without changing for prolly close to 15 years now. Always fresh, cause they can't keep up with demand.....last month I could only get 3 bags cause they were sold out, till they ground again the next day.

GO BEARS, and beat the LIONS TOOOOOO...
