Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

We should wait for keedokes announcement, but it was on the news that it passed for a one year trial with tight restrictions.

I have an idea for the bash. On Saturday. Maybe you already do this. How about some mini inservices? Everyone could chime in with topics before the bash and then experienced members could volunteer to teach them. Nothing real formal, just sitting around a table talking or showing. Some ideas I would like to learn about is how to clip wing feathers; how to catch a runaway-; how to properly pick up and hold a chicken; how tomexamine a chicken and what to look for, etc. As a newbie I know that I could use some instructions. What do you think?

Good afternoon! Glad I am HOME! Raiq If his diaper is wet in the morning he might not have the capacity to hold it all night. You could try not letting him have any drinks 2 hours before bed...dont know if that really works though. Can he get out of bed by himself and go to the bathroom if he has to go during the night? Sometimes kids, (boys especially) dont have the "wake up if you have to go hormone" at a young age. Up to you if you wanted to deal with wet bedding...you could put a potty chair in his room and let him go with out if he understands well enough to get up and go. Sounds like you are doing a great job!

I have lilacs in the house and I think I might have to take them out...pretty potent! I brought dinner home from the center today for the girls. DH left for Missouri at 3AM(to write damage estimates) so he's not here and it's something I cant eat...I will have pop corn! So--dinner id done! I have the whole night ahead of me to do whatever I want...probably will weed some flower gardens....I had another broody hatch about a dozen chicks...cute little buggers! I found out my new neighbors want to get chickens...I will tell them about this site. Who knows, I might have a farm sitter to trade chores with then! (I sure hope I can sell them some of these extra little birdies!) My other thought goes like this, "if they have chickens too, then they probably wont mind my geese on their pond!"

David, my little ones go out and I have escorted them in for three nights. Last night they surprised me and were all in when I went to close the door! They used to pile in the corner behind a stick I had in the kennel. I moved that so they couldnt hide behind it any more and they went in! Now If I could just get the lavender bantams to go in! THey still are under the impression that the place to sleep in the roof of the coop!

And welcome to our Cheesy thread! I hope you stay a long time and post often! Even if you dont have much to say (like me!)

I am so glad for the people in Milwaukee that they at least get to try chickens! I wonder how many dont like the "one year trial" part. Kind of a lot to do if you might only be able to have them for a year! Hopefully the folks that count will get birds and then it will stick around. Good work Keedokes!

So when are you heading up here DKV? My lady is back from therapy after breaking her hip and she just LOVES to go to Janesville! I am looking for something to do with her instead of just sitting around. SHe hates animals and plants (she would love your dogs though) so she can sit there and we can talk!

Well I suppose I should shut up and go outside and do something. Oh, I wanted to say something about your crazy hen Amyable...do you think it could be having a seizure? That is really odd!
Have a great night everyone! Terri O

Amyable, it might be wry or twisted neck. Hereditary defect from a recessive gene that both parents carry. Pretty common in brown leghorns. Do not use her to breed.
TO, so sorry to hear you lost some babies. That is so sad. And congrats on the parrot eggs. My new dove lays eggs like crazy. I'll take them away, and a week later, she's got 2 more. If some of them hadn't broke, I'd have a full dozen by now. Crazy bird. I hear you on the farm sitter. Thank goodness for my mom & SIL. And I always wind up writing an entire 2-sided page of instructions for them. I think DK said they will be leaving on the 30th & are driving up? But I could be mistaken.
JV, like any of us really needs more critters. Especially you.

Not a swift move with the gosling. Who's gonna be the cry baby when Annie gets home?

Kedokes, CONGRATS on the ordinance being passed!!!!!!

We used to have a hen in Milw. when I was growing up. But she lived in the house & used a litterbox. Ssssshhhhhh!
Cind, you're near Burlington? Not too far from me. We had a tree go down too, but it was already dead. Glad you're ok, and everyone else too.
I warned ya, Raim! Never drink anything while reading this thread.

On another note, I'm really sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope she is feeling better soon. Those tick bites can be scary bad. Can you have guineas where you are? I hear they love ticks.
Welcome, Dornes! Glad you found us. Don't know if the feeling will be mutual, though. Hope you like lots of reading!

Thanks for the well wishes, DK. I know you can relate. Hope you're still having some good days. Can't wait til you get here! Hubby & I will have to take a bike ride out.

Sounds like you are doing a great job, Raiq! Could you try those Overnites diapers until he gets the hang of it a little better? I think they might be the kind you can pull up?
Dooner, on catching a runaway, a muskie net usually works.

Well, better go & check that the chicks are sleeping where they are supposed to be. How long is it gonna take? Not the brightest bunch I have......
DrH, did ya survive day 2?

Oh and very excited about Milwaukee and chickens. About time people start realizing how wonderful chickens are.
have a good night everyone!

Evening all!!

Whoo!! Congrats to Keedokes and Milw on getting the ordinance passed!! Yeah!!!

Beckyschicks-great pictures and thank you for posting them!! I love to see other peoples animals! I love love love Honey Dew! Her dapples are so pretty!

Welcome Dornes! Hope you have fun here!

Dooner-I catch runaways by using meal worms. I give mine mealies as treats so when they see the mealie container, they come a running. Personally, I've never had much luck with a net. Once my girls have been netted, they make sure they never get netted again. I'm sure people net all the time and have good results with it though. I'm sure there will be tons of people who will answer any questions you have. If I was going, I'd be happy to help you but alas, I'm Chicago bound that day....

I'm glad to hear that everyone seems to be ok from the storms. My thoughts and prayers are with those who were not so lucky.

I had a rough morning today. I felt like I was the worst chicken mom ever. I cleaned out the Buzzy brooder (glass fish tank) and had set down the paper towels. I got side tracked and forgot to add in the shavings for the chicks to use as traction. I went upstairs to finish cleaning the brooder area from the seminar chicks and came down to a lame and flopping little Bardie- Daphne. She could not walk and her left foot was all balled up. She was making distressed peeps. I called dh to come and look and he thought that she might have strained a muscle or tendon doing stupid chick tricks. I asked him if he though she might have slipped in the towels but he seamed to think that she got hurt another way. I felt so bad. Then as she was flopping, I notice Cornelius the Cornish broiler laying on his stomach with his feet flat out behind him. He could not get up. I picked him up and set him back down but he pitched forward again. In tears, I called my dh again to look at him and he thought Cornie might have sprattled but he also thought Cornie was too old to sprattle. I massaged his legs and got him to sit with his legs underneath him correctly. Once I did that, I massaged Daphne and she seamed more comfortable. I put shaving in their brooder to make everyone more comfortable and then I left them to rest. I felt so terrible and that I did a bad parenting job. Dh tried to console me and tell me that with Cornish that is a chance you take in raising them and that chicks like Daphne do stupid things where they get hurt. I agreed with him since I knew this with my head but my heart was to involved to be objective! DH said we'll give then a day and evaluate them tomorrow. Buzzy and the other three girls were all fine, so I had no idea what went wrong with those two.
So, with a heavy heart, I finished up my brooder cleaning chores and did some laundry. I checked on Cornie and Daphne and they eventually seamed more comfortable. Cornie could scoot around on his hocks and Daphne needed her wings to balance but they were not making distressed peeps. They eventually slept next to each other and I had to go take care of my dog walking job. When I got back I was expecting a poor prognosis. I got back and found Daphne walking stiffly but walking without wing support and Cornie was standing up and sitting down but he seamed better. I then went to run some errands and when I got home both Daphne and Cornie were walking around, eating and drinking. Daphne now can run and hop and seams no worse for wear and Cornie can walk and run a little but he still is a little stiff. They seam to be doing ok!! Yeah!!!
So even as I type Cornie and Daphne are doing much better and are hopping and playing with Buzzy and the other Buzzettes! Cornie is still a little sore but I think with a good nights sleep he'll be right as rain in the morning.

Other then that, I got two eggs today and the young pullets and Winston got some meal worms. They enjoyed that treat! Winston is so cute and he get so jelous when I pick up to kiss my really spanglie Orloff who now has a name! Petunia (or maybe Flora!!) I'll have to post her picture and get y'alls opinion on where she is a Petunia or a Flora!

Well, I'm off to bed. It's been a long day with an emotional morning for me so I'm going to bed early and wake up to a better day tomorrow!
Night all!

Are you kidding, Bec? We love pictures! Yours are wonderful. I love them. You have some beautiful animals.
I was just kidding about the net. As soon as my gals see it, they go running.

Before I say goodnight I wanted to tell Becky how envious I am of her fencing! Very nice! I loved the pics too...we all have to share what we have---curious minds and all that! Good night--sleep tight! Terri O

(PS) Celtic--I was sorry to hear about your chicks silly mishaps...but glad they prolly will be fine tomorrow! Whew! Also, if you leave your dove's eggs in her nest she will lay a clutch and then set on them...when she gets off you toss them. That way she gets a break from laying eggs every day. That is what I did when I had doves and it worked great!

Hmmm--we havent heard back from Jim...suppose he is driving all over to find a replacement gosling?

Well I have some messed up (confused) poultry in the basement.
I have 2 call duck juvvies from Sweet Folly, 4 Salmon Faverolle chicks (raising for a friend), and brought back two of the younger chicks that are just a bit smaller than the others out at the barn.
The ducks decided to "break" down the divider and even though they have their own light, water, feed and stuff... they were lonely? I dunno..
so now I have a multi-species/breed and age thing going. I hope the little chicks don't decide they should be ducks...
and the ducks give up loving water... this could be bad.. LOL

Just wanted to share.
Carol

I have a question for you. We got the pair at 8 weeks old last July and they didn't have any one on one with people so they are very stand offish. They are mean and soooo controlling with the 6 week old pullets. Took out the roo and the Mrs. is still mean to them. Not so much as pecking but keeping them in the coop or kicking them out. At night they cower in the corner.
barnie.gif
When she isn't in the coop they lay under the light and spread out all relaxed. I took her out tonight also. What should I do ? Get them there own place or Soup??? Will they get along if I let them together longer? Just not sure what to do ???? Any help would be greatly appreciated from anyone of the Cheeseheads. You people are like Chicken Gods
