Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hello JustJohn, kristip, and everyone.

I try to follow along with the Wisconsin Cheeseheads, but fall behind on the strings since I'm still working full time. We lived in Belleville for 30 years and just bought 2.5 acres between New Glarus and Belleville to start our "retirement" business. So far we have grown two batches of meat birds, now have the start of our laying flock and are absolutely loving our chickens!! I've been enjoying this group (feel like I know many of you already). Well break is over now I need to get to work

maybe I can check back during lunch.

Rberry...I am right off 69 in new glarus. We will have to get together and I would love to see your meaty set up.
My first day off in ages...have some interviews next week.
Starting my seeds this weekend, was supposed to be last weekend, but the flu had us all down and out. Mine is still lingering, but fading, which is good. Off to clean and see if carol and I can touch base today.

My Easter hatch is going to be much smaller than I had intended. All sorts of folks that owe me eggs can't get them to me. Gggrrrr darn chickens should lay those things faster so I can have them! I think I'm only going to have Swedish flower hens, may be 6 faverolles, and may be 6 polish? But that lady has not returned my messages. What do you do when you've claimed a swap and they don't get back to you???

I may have to buy eggs at this rate! Which sucks because I've already paid pay pals after claiming swaps and have no eggs to show for it.

I'm at my job site now. For the next few weeks I'm working 9-3 which is much more manageable traffic. I also got my first paycheck. Turns out its already gone because there's not enough to pay the mortgage without it. NOT so easy come but easy go...

Jim I'm still in awe with all your organization of incubators and chicks. You still do good for a man in his 90's...

(I like stirring the pot occassionally)

Have a great day all!
I've had that problem with swaps I've claimed too. Some haven't replied to PM's sent, others take a couple of messages before they get back to you. Very frustrating. So far I haven't had anyone totally ignore me though. If that were the case I'd send a PM to one of the Mod's on that swap and let them know what's up. Copying in the messages sent to the person you should be getting eggs from helps too. I've got lots of swaps that were for spring eggs that I've been trying to line up but many people's chickens just aren't laying well yet either. I've become more selective on who I claim from now as well. Pay attention to who people say pack their eggs well, who sends lots of extras and who they get good hatch rates from. One of the bigger swappers on there sent me some really dirty eggs and I only had 2 hatch out of 8 sent. Not going to claim anymore from them even though she's got breeds I'd like to get.

Hope you are able to get some lined up for the Easter hatch!

good morning,,,,I think,,,early yet

on the subject of worming, I researched and decided to use Ivermectin injectable in the birds water it gets rid of parasites inside and out. I have treated spring and fall in their water for 24hrs, then a 10 day interval and retreat. I clean the coops thoroughly at the same time. While I have seen some worms I have had recurring lice/mites appear, this treatment has worked for me. While not tested i.e. approved on poultry it does work well. If you search on this site you will find info including dosage,,,,there is no withdrawal time and you are using a very tiny dose applied this way. This stuff is also available in paste form but with 50+- birds I chose the water app.

I would be interested if Hurley weighs in on this

Unkadan- where did you find the injectable ivermectin, and what dose did you use? I have less than half your flock and dread having to use paste again.
CC- that is a interesting point you have with the intestine blockage. Has that ever happened to you?
Delisha- your list of worming ingredients was making me hungery LOL. The hull of black walnuts is also used to kill worms, and cloves are suppose to kill eggs. Your natural worming made me feel like the Grinch......I just jamed Zimecterin Gold down my ckns throat

.
Cuties- worms come when your ckns eat insects, and other things that are the host for certain worms. Such as, a slug can be a host for tape worms. Not every slug or insect is a host so don't freak out. Also, some worm eggs can lay dormant for years in the dirt. IMO ckns could get worms from eating anything off the ground. I free range as much as WI lets me, and I don't worry about worms. I just asume my ckns have worms and treat them.

GS I bought mine on line, can't remember where or who,,,but the cheapest,,,lol
various names for cows, sheep, horses,,,most vet supply places will have it (FF did not in liquid)

google is my friend,,,

I used 2cc per gallon of water,,,a 50ml will go a long way,,,you will need a syringe for measuring

I butcher and eat my chickens..I know all chicken do have worms. We also carry a worm load. The trick is finding a balance. I always check my chickens during butchering. If I am eating them, I simply need to know. I have yet to actually see worms during butchering. I take samples into the vet for checking twice a year. I have never used a drug or chemicals to worm my birds, but, I would use it if at testing they found worms. Same with my dog. I do not drug my dog or give meds for prevention. For prevention she gets natural herbs. She is also tested at the same time.

I left the coop locked up today-will be interesting to see how many eggs there are tonight as the cat can't get inside. With allthe comments I am second guessing if its the cat or what now.

TGIF: I can get out there and patch up the bird netting over the top, and check for any other gaps that the cat/anything else can get in. Also can watch my coop cam to see if I can figure this out.
