This certainly has been an interesting spring for egg production. I hope it isn't something in the feed. First, lots of fart eggs, then the other extreme; jumbo!

Didn't someone else have one not long ago? Was it Judge?





I can't believe I didn't hear her from inside the house. Poor girl!

Morning, cloudy start to the day, maybe some sunshine tommorrow

Terry O- nothing as of yet, thinking what we saw is part of the egg- I haven't messed with them since we put the eggs in the bator....we'll keep you posted.

kids are on spring break this week.....so far we have had 2 days at home to hang out

DD is making brownies this morning

so last night we put the baby bunnies into their bigger area and they were having a blast! Will try to post a picture.

Figuring that we will be making another batch of maple syrup this weekend- next couple of days should be good for the sap to run! Have to run and pick up some more 8 oz jars.

Good morning..I am lazy this morning. I am still in PJs. Normally my birds are out by now and fed and watered. Coffee is just too good. I need to make a trip to the feed store. Yesterday is the first day all pullets layed an egg with the big girls. 9 eggs a day is a good haul with 9 layers. I will soon be up to my normal 20 by years end and I think I will be keeping it this year with 20 layers with the addition of the three different breeds. (plus DH Silkies..but those are not really chickens.)

Babies are doing well this morning. The ones in the basement are doing the norm (poop, eat, drink, poop, sleep). They aren't making any sound other than happy sounds. The older ones outside are chosing to stay upstairs away from the rabbit and it is a bit warmer in there too. I have seen them eating FF but I have not seen them drink by themselves yet. One of the older ones has poop that is more red than I am comfortable with. I'll keep an eye on the poop to make sure it normalizes.

those guys at the coffee shop are hanging out there for a reason.; they don't want to work..

yesterday I hit upon another use for these sections.. how does a covered chicken run sound.. ?
4 ft high 11 ft wide and as long as you want to make it in 11 foot increments ? few or no posts to pound in.. maybe one post every 11 feet just to stabilize the sides..

a 4 ft x 11 ft pen could be utilized as a chicken tractor.. In my case, I could easily lift it with a strap on the tractor bucket and swing it anywhere I wanted to. two people could easily lift it,, or one person could drag it..

you could use it as a breeding pen.. it could handle 10 hens and a rooster..
I housed 10 roosters over winter in a 4 ft x 10 ft pen.

I was thinking of building something this summer that I could sell.. maybe this is the answer..

last night I started up the third bator.. I am using #2 for a hatcher.. this AM the temp is 108F and the RH is 16%.. I am presently reducing the temp to 100.5 F with the back up thermostat.
I figure I should have it stabilized within an hour or so..it already is down to 100F.. just have to see if it will hold there for a while..

It would be really neat if the styrofoam bators had such a set up.. It would not be too difficult to wire in a second thermostat..

Well I candled all the eggs I set for the Easter hatch this morning. Of the 46 I set I pulled 13, most of those were the 7 clear W/BW Ameraucana eggs from a swap. Some other shipped eggs look really good though!

Well we have peeping uber cuteness at our house.
I went to Abendroths to pick up 4 silkies and 4 d'uccle for the future breeding with Kristi's silkies and d'uccle (mille fleur color).
She had me add two pullets to the order for a friend of hers who is getting 10 chicks I believe from this hatch.

I found out something wonderful, they process poultry, from turkeys to quail. around 5-6 dollars depending on the bird and color.. they present you with
a whole bird, but do remove the head/neck and feet. They don't quarter or halve a bird.
I know where I am taking my meaties when they are ready!!

Well off to go get more chick stuff and then get my niece for lunch.

I have not gotten my BO hatching eggs.. I am waiting for the man to contact me.. I think he is getting from his source for chicks, and I imagine it will take a few days to collect a large amount of eggs..

I have plenty of room for eggs in the two bators yet.. I have about 185 eggs in them, I could stack the trays in one of them and reach a total of 24 dozen more easily, with more room to spare in the other bator..

If I do not hear from him today, I will give him a call..

my hatcher is just about ready for some water to be added..
