Question about Cochins...
Right now I've only got 2 LF, 1 blue, 1 gold laced, both pullets. I'm interested in the reds, as well as other colors, but I don't have to have every single color that's out there. I have the ability to get some at a reasonable price and am debating it. However - I don't have the means to keep every single color of every single breed seperated. So I'd like to get colors that are compatable if they DO breed together. What colors would you guys recommend that would breed better with each other? I was thinking getting a black rooster and he'd be ok to breed to pullets that are most any color, black, blue, splash, gold & silver laced, partridge, white, barred. The buff & red I'm not sure of. Can you breed buff, red, and white together? Can I keep those 3 colors together and then the other colors together? What's everyone's opinions on whch colors mix okay and which would screw it up to much? I definately like red more than buff, also - can you breed red, black, or white to partridge?

For my bantam Cochins, I have 1 white (roo?), 1 black frizzle (pullet?), and 3 alleged mottleds; 1 blue, 2 black. Supposed to be 1 roo and 2 pullets but IDK which color is which sex. Also, had someone tell me in another group that my blacks look like solid blacks, not mottled at all. So now I've no clue what I've got. I think I'm done w/the bantams. I really don't want a bunch of them. But I certainly want more than just 2 LF, as I'm primarily looking for egg layers and if I hatch out a few eggs here and there, it'd mostly be for the fun of it and/or to make a few sales here and there. But if I HAVE TO breed blue to blue, black to black, GL to GL, SL to SL, etc... then I'm not sure I'm willing to do that. That's just getting to be way too many roosters to have 1 rooster for every single color. Keep in mind I'll have roos of my other breeds too, so it's just going to get to be way too noisy and too many fights. I would much rather have 1 or 2 that can breed to most of the other colors. What's everyone's opinions on color compatability??

Oh. Well I guess I'm just going by what I heard as far as most people are saying that Amerecaunas are daily layers. So skipping a day once in awhile I thought maybe wasn't a big deal at all, but for a "daily layer" to go 10 days (today's day 11 and nothing yet, but it's still early) I thought would be a sign that she's too old, going broody, or that somthing's wrong? IDK.

I have 9 true Ameraucana pullets/hens and I know for a fact the breed is not known as being "dailey layers" 4-5 eggs per week is good, they also go broody, and at times just stop laying for a few days/weeks,,,all of the breeders I have talked to agree that this IS the norm for the breed. with your green and pink eggs you have easter eggers, some do say those lay better than the Ams,,,patience gets tested raising poultry you will figure that out eventually

Psycho: I would agree with Delisha....I have had hens from the same breeder. Some started laying immediately and others took a few weeks for them to relax and start laying again.

Agreed. I have 3 Ameraucana hens, 2 yrs old now and its more like 3-4 eggs/week. When they are laying, which is not year round. Their eggs are bluer but not as large as my EE's.

I won't b able 2make it to the bash, but thx for the invite and maybe another yr.I'll come.
I tried to add a pic of my 2 girls but mt phone freaked on me.... Another time.
So, the ' incident'. I'll start with background info. I had 5 girls and a rooster Australorp, 2 weeks old. I have 2 boys,6yr & almost 3yrs old. We also have a cat and a dog, who's a German shorthair. My coop was latched with a carabiner and everyone could open the coop,i have springs on each of the doors so they won't stay open.(we converted our wood shed into the coop, two front doors, one cut into a dutch door)
So after lunch, my youngest went outside to play, our dog was already outside. I was cleaning up and couldn't see anyone outside, which isn't unusual as I can't se the sandbox from the house. I went outside and was headed to the play area then heard him yelling at the dog....instantly I knew what was going on and ran to the coop. I opened the door and out blasted the dog, and my boy was looking so confused and upset. I was so sad and angry and frustrated. I found 2 dead,2feet in different areas of the coop. I started looking outside and found one under my van. She was the only survivor, and only b/c she managed to get out before the door closed. (sigh) when I found her she striped out if my reach, and I just sat up and started bawling, having failed my job as their mom and protector. She came right up and jumped into my lap! I couldn't believe it. She never wanted me to set her down after that and would even try to fly out the window after me. It was so sad.
I haven't named her yet. I want something that fits. A friend gave us a bantam cochin who is the same age so she isn't lonely anymore.

Hey guys, I live in belleville, 15mins south of madison. I havent been on the forum much lately but we just finished building our chicken tractor and we love it. we got 6 bantams. two silver laced wyandottes, one golden laced wyandotte, one black wyandotte, and two columbian rocks. They are fitting in perfect in our back yard, but we are looking for two more bantams. i was hoping for a easter eagger, i have never owned a hen just a rooster and we really want to add a hen to our flock. and maybe one other kind. I was hoping someone on this forum would be able to help us out. we would be willing to pay a premium for a younger pullet or hen. if you guys have any other bantams that are available please let me know. We are not interested in feather footed unless its a Millie Fleur D'Uccles. Also we are interested in the larger bantams. Thank you so much guys ill work on getting a picture of our coop. it turned out great.
Thanks
Chad

Well...just got my two week notice for my job. I have known since February it was coming... still sucks but I am so not ready to go full time yet with my babies so young.
Rough day!
Best of luck to you. These things are hard to take. Hope your day gets better. Where a door is closed a window is opened:)
