Robin, they are adorable too !!! I know they are Hershey chicks but what breed again? Are the lighter ones more lavenders? You must use a red bulb hey? And a teddy bear??? I'd say there are some spoiled chicks down there !!! lol

I'm at a loss with my garden. It's the middle of June and I haven't been able to plant anything due to the numerous late frosts and then all the rain. If it doesn't rain EVERY day, then it's every other day. The seeds won't be able to hold! The ground will just get washed away and/or they'll float in a little mud puddle in the garden. I thought of maybe planting the seeds a little deeper to compensate, but if it's TOO deep, they won't grow. GRR! I'm temted to say screw it and plant them anyawy and whatever grows, grows. But then I'm afraid of wasting all the seed and having to buy another $60-80 worth of seed again in another month. Sigh. I have given up on looking at the forecast. Does anyone know if it'll be sunny out for DAYS in a row? I actually DID have about 13 or 14 egg crates in my house already planted and was going to transplant them, but they ended up dying b/c I couldn't get them planted. All those nasty storms and strong winds and tornado like weather would've whipped those little sprouts right outta the ground and it wouldn't've done me any good! Can someone please give me some advise? Should I do a 24hr soak, start them in egg cartons again, and plant in 2 weeks regardless of if it keeps raining and just hope for the best b/c their root system has already started? Or should I just drop the seeds directly into the ground and pray to Mother Nature and tell her how lovely she looks this time of year and what a wonderful Goddess she is and see if buttering her up helps me much??

Delaware - we wanted to add to our heritage flock. We also have Rhode Island Reds. We are wanting to add Jersey Giants to the flock at some point, so if anyone knows of some please let me know.
why don't you just take a few eggs from the one chicken and give them to the bantam ? you will not end up with any extra chicks than otherwise .. and bantams make excellent brooders..
We considered taking some of the fertilized eggs we had gotten for the Delaware, but we are barely set up for one hen and chicks. We seem to have developed a bad habit of underestimating what we need and are then rushing to get housing built

Rod is going to build a small broody coop that could house a couple of hatches at time for next year. I have heard the bantams a very good brooders and really want to give her a try so my fingers are crossed that she will go broody again when she and I are BOTH ready. Also we have no rooster (well didn't until this hatch) so we need to purchase fertilized eggs and only want from breeders we know or have been referred to.

Quote: you are overthinking yourself.. a bantam needs only about a 12 inch x 12 inch space on the ground.. a milk crate is perfect.. you do not need coops for them after they hatch.. the mom will probably not go back to her nest once she hatches the chicks anyway.. It's only 3 eggs, go for it.. you have 3 weeks to build something in the mean time..

Jim. Jimbo. Jimmy Jim Jim Bob. One of my buff orpington PULLETS comb is pinking up and its developing wattles. What do you have to say about this??? (Probably "Jokes on you")

Dang you DCBA.... I knew you were in cahoots with him to give me a roo!
