Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

DH & I went to a concert in Chicago last night. I felt like a sardine in a can, but the band (Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros) was great. I slept until 10am and while at the library with DD10 & DS9, I realized that my backpack (which I had with me at the concert ) was still harboring a strange skunk-like smell.

I had planned to cull the roos today but we are too pooped, so it 'll have to wait.

Egg layer laid her second egg today, she hasn't yet regulated to a daily event because she skipped yesterday). She did lay it up in the coop this time and not the run, but still not in the nest/egg box. So what I did was to move the egg to the nest box and hope that tomorrow she lays in the box.

LM Sounds like a plan! You will have to give me a refresher though..... and like I have said before, I am still a bit nervous going fast.....

I'll shoot you a PM.

I am supposed to start training but I feel like caca! The 'growing pains' of exercising I guess...... and I am trying to drink a lot of water but sometimes it is difficult.

I really like this whole fermented feed idea. Have any of you who feed FF noticed a decrease in pest infestations in your birds? Someday when I do get chickens I would like to have them medicated as little as possible; let their own defenses keep them healthy.

Finally all the strawberries are frozen! Perhaps since it is cooler this week, I will get some jam made. The kids will appreciate that!

Honestly, when it comes to name calling/stereotypes based on assumptions or generalizations, I do not participate or pay attention to the details of what is being said by the individuals that are doing it. My general philosophy is to get to know individuals and decide whether I like that person. If I don't like that person, I do not hold it against anyone else with similar hair, skin color, religion, political view, geographical location, etc.

Bl4- I do not medicate and have been fortunate to not need to. Also I only started FF this year. Sorry to hear that getting back into the swing of things is tougher than you hoped. It'll get better. I just hope you aren't coming down with anything. I find for me, in order to drink a bunch of water, it has to be icy cold and somehow flavored, cucumer slice, mint leaf, slice of fruit, gatorade powder, etc.

Bf4m-as far as sexing the chickens, its luck. My first batch last year I picked 7 roos and 3 pullets. My odds must have been better this time around!

I have been out of the swing of things since I went on vacation....... so it is more difficult to get back to the level of what I was doing. Of course, I was just doing kickboxing, now I need to get back into running (yuck), start riding my bicycle (and find a road bike before the Tri), and at some point I need to work on my swimming skills which are dismal. I think if I work on my upper body strength, that will help me with the swimming (along with practicing whenever I can).

Frenchie, no I have not broken into the Apple Pie, but the DH said is is super yummy! He had a nip at the bash.

Making LABS and fermentation of feeds and grains

I make my own labs by boiling rice and adding an extra 2 cups of liquid. I drain off that liquid and measure it. I than add the same amount of raw milk to that rice water in a glass container and cover with paper towel and use a rubber band to cover it. Set it out for two weeks and using a coffee filter filter out the cheese curds. I feed the curds to the chickens.
The liquid you have left is used 1000 to 1. Those are your labs.

As far as winter fermentation..I pull the bucket inside. It likes temps above 50. When the summer temps get above 90 I pull the bucket in the garage. I use a 3 gallon bucket so it is easy for me to haul around. I have over 150 poultry and I only feed out half my bucket, and refill it after feeding. I have long grass so I know they get more than enough, even if they act like they have not been fed in a month.

thanks one more time Delisha!! And Unkadan too! I have a room I keep right around that temp in winter that should work perfect (actually a bedroom but gets turned into winter storage for potatoes, squash, etc. since we don't have a basement) As for fermentation, since I am using Nutrena for my FF that already has several powdered LABS in it, my bucket is already bubbling like a witches brew!

BTW ~ what is this 90o of which you speak??? Heard that happened here once or twice but I am not sure I believed the teller. This is a myth, right???

FRENCHIE ~ Merry's Berries is starting to pick on Monday!!! Starting with a limited first day of Wendy's and hope to be picking Annapolis on the 4th??? I would recommend calling ahead. We usually wait and go after the Sparkles. We love their wine like flavor. The price this year is 1.49 lb Upick. They won't have any "they pick" til after the 4th.

Have a roadtrip to GB tomorrow so tuesday is the day I introduce the babies to the big girls.

Noodle got into the run when I was letting the babies explore the other day and she took after them so it should be interesting. That crazy chicken is already jealous of Crockpot because she gets my attention when I have to wash her "leaking" bottom and throws a fit when I'm doing it. She watches me whenever I am doing anything with the chicks and I get the impression she isn't thrilled about it. Whenever I'm outside she pulls on my pantleg so I will pick her up and won't go in the coop at night until I come outside then she comes running up to me to be picked up and put away. And of course there is always the queen of the coop miss Soup who eats the best stuff first, etc. whenever she thinks she can get away with it and who can be a real ----- when she doesn't like something. Anyway, I am going to have to keep a close watch for a few days I'm sure.

Rough day today so back to my comfy chair til supper. Not supposed to rain tomorrow finally!!!!

later peeps
