Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Oh no, bbl, very sorry to hear about your little ones!

We picked up three 6 day old Silkie chicks on the 25th..

The middle chick didn't make it, but the black and white are doing very well. :)
The black one is named Batman (my sister thought bantam was pronounced batman LOL) and the white one is Super Chick.

Today we picked up 8 more chicks ~ 4 Ameraucana, 2 RIR, 1 barred rock and 1 red laced orpington, I think.
They are about a week old.

Here are the 10 chickies together.. a couple of the newbies were picking on the Silkies, but they seemed to all get along after a half hour together.

My kids picked out three to raise at our house. We stopped at F&F and petco for supplies. I read a thread on here about using sand and reduced smell, so we're trying it out. I sawed off parts of a broken baby gate to make a roost, and a lid. We have 3 indoor cats, so far they've not been too interested, but I'll be drilling a hole in each corner and tying the gate/lid on to make sure they cannot get at the babies!

Heat lamp, temp at 90 degrees, waterer, feeder, roost.

Am I missing anything important?? I want this little ones to thrive!

Is this how chicks sleep?

And some pictures from earlier.. Miss Addy helping in the coop:

and hanging out on the steps :)

I have three Hershey eggs fertile, three blue eggs fertile and three Buckeye eggs fertile.:celebrate

Like you need more birds? Sheesh! At this rate Joe will definitely need to extend that coop and plan to build another.LOL

My baby geese are missing! My babies:( I've been crying on and off all day. I'm seriously heartbroken over this. The only other animal that I loved as much as them is the dog. Its a really rotten situation. Not sure if something grabbed them or if they wandered off. I looked for them for about 40 minutes last night and a half hour this morning. This sucks! So bad

Sorry about the babies!

The 2 trees are down, cut and stacked. We put a few bundles at the curb for pick up. One of our neighbors wanted US to drop off a few on their back porch. What? If they want them they can get their 11kids over to our house to get them. We already did all of the work! It does look different as you come up the driveway. I need to rake the debris away and start the process of returning the nutrients to the soil under the cut trees. Step one: burn out the stumps.

Hi ALL!

Irish... Glad your feeling better! Your shopping trip sounds like one I need to make!

bl4... Glad DH is feeling better!

FT,,, sounds like that pup is going to be a handful!

TO... I love those FREE baskets! When I take eggs to donate to the food pantry (Love Inc. around here) I pick up what they have to offer, What was the school going to do with dried goose eggs? Showed the video to my kids (it was on FB) for some reason they thought of me

vickie.... I don't think that video resembles ANY of us! Just because SOME people have goats and pigs and cows and.....

Jim... Cool baby pics!

Bf4m.... sorry about the chick

erinnoie.... cute pics!

Young Son brought home a 20+ lb. catfish today.... sounds like FFF!
Kind of weird, a couple of guineas have been hanging with the new hen all day. They even act like they are protecting her.

Guess that's it, got a ton of stuff to do in town tomorrow (today to you).... Night All!

BBP.... Awww.... I hope you find them safe! Did you take the kayak out to look? Maybe if they see or hear you they would come out of hiding.

Amy a.... Sorry about your friend.

That is truly awful BBP. I like George my gosling a lot. But it really sounds like you imprinted on those baby geese as well. It makes me sad to hear how idyllic your outings were with them and now they're missing. I'm really sad about your loss.

My thoughts as well BBP. Hugs and a little prayer.

AMY- so sorry to hear about your friend. What stage?

Love starting my day with a good laugh . . .

Poor Frenchie, sounds like your pup has separation anxiety..... try giving her a Kong stuffed with PB every time you leave, or a chewie, or a bone of some kind. It is a good idea to go away on short spurts and make them longer and longer if you can. No blood donating going on here, I have low iron levels so I need to hang on to all my blood!

:)
FrenchToast: I agree with bl4 on the Kong with PB. My niece keeps a couple of PB filled Kongs in the freezer for when she needs to be gone for a longer period of time. That keeps her lab pup busy for hours. What her dogs really need is a good daily run, she has two working breeds and lives in town . . . but I can only suggest

Hi FRENCHIE!!!
I learned quickly not to over complicate the FF thing. Of course you can get really into making your own feed to ferment and add all kinds of wonderful stuff but I decided to, at least in the beginning, to keep it simple. Since my pellets already has LABS in it, all I had to do was throw some in a clean plastic bucket, add water (and keep adding water as it gets sucked up to keep at least an inch or so of water on top) stir at least two or three times a day for the first couple days and watch the bubbles. I have a lid on my bucket because it's sitting on my back porch. I actually scooped some out for my girls the first night to make sure they would actually eat it, especially the babies. All mine love it! I threw in extra feed right away and that was it! I let the bucket sit until the following night and it was bubbling away so I put out a cup for each girl. They actually didn't finish it up till the next day so I've backed off a little. I also didn't add anymore dry after realizing I had plenty going. Yesterday I did throw in the last og the chick starter I had just to get rid of it. The bucket wasn't cooking that well this morning but it got pretty chilly last night. My recommendation to you is to go check out the natural chicken keeping website. Hope this helps.
I agree with vickiw in keeping it simple. I made myself crazy following all the good suggestions here and on various blogs and youtubes, then finally (like jumping into the lake) just dumped the food in a pail then added my water, and more water, and more water, and even more water . . . whew, yup I had quite a big batch that first time. I have one batch with chick starter and another with my layer pellets. I needed to tweak how I fed it to them. I now place a little of the dry chick starter crumbles in the bottom of their dish and top the dish off with the really wet FF. My big girls really like the chick starter better than their which is why I give them a bit of the dry crumbles but cover theirs with the layer pellet FF and a drizzle of the FF chick starter. Oh yeah, my girls are pretty spoiled - but darned happy

Bf4m and BBP: sorry to hear about the losses
Sorry BBP, maybe they will turn up yet. I just had to cull one of the ScovyX babies, found it on the beach with its side torn up. The mama flew out of the garden today and the babies must have squeezed out under the gate, they were all in the pond this morn. I really hope we don't have a snapper taking up summer residence in there.

Wanted to let you folks know that my friend Julie who came to the Bash with me was just diagnosed with breast cancer last week. She is one tough cookie and has a kick butt attitude about it, but she and her fam could use your prayers. There might be some fundraising events as the year goes on, I will post them as they are planned. One of her other friends just made a Facebook support page for her, called Julie's Jugs Fighters, so those of us on FB can drop notes of encouragement.
Amyable: My thoughts are with you and your friend Julie.

Good morning! My BFF is coming over today...thought she would be here by now...but she just left (lives in Kenosha County) so it will be a while...good, I can get chores done! I am going down to the basement next, candling eggs and moving them to the hatcher for friday/Saturday hatch. I hope LOTS are fertile! (they should be) Glad yours are Vicky, maybe you can join our exclusive 10 toed Buckeye club? I think it was Judy that was asking about that? For some reason one roo/hen combination I have in the buckeye pen is throwing chicks with and extra toe. Yes it is very like the one on a Faverolle. We will see how it grows out as all the babies are less than 2 months old!

Welcome back CC and anyone else that was missing! I hope you had a nice trip. Amy or BL4--thanks for inviting me to the Jugs group...cant remember who it was...give her a great big hug from me too OK?

Cind the school is going to dehydrate them and add them to their collection. I guess they study shell structure or something in one class. He was saying that they do measurements and stuff and compare different species/lines. Sounds like a class I would like to take!

OK--getting off my butt for another cuppa...then down to the dungeon!
Later all! TerriO

Cs,

I just sold all of my ducks and all of my males... I must have sold over 50 birds in two days.
Was a busy weekend. I am down to under 50 birds. It seems so naked in the yard like it is winter approaching. I have the chicks growing up under hens, the incubator full, and 10 Wyandottes growing, and my layers and Orpingtons. That's it.
