Yes JJ there are ways to teach a dog not to steal food off the table. You can blame the dog of course but if you already know your dog will be taking food then the fault lies on you for leaving food unattended with the dog.

I have a rat terrier? and a Boxer/Lab. Both have been excellent with the Budgies, the ducks, with the duck babies.... in fact, the babies will try to check the dogs out while the dogs try to take naps in the yard. We allow the Budgise to fly around the LR every once in a while and occasionally one will fly right at eye level with the Boxer/Lab. She has never yet snapped at one, neither has the Terrier. They know they are off limits. Same with the ducks, the ducks will run up to the dogs and bite them in the belly, back of the legs, wherever they can grab a pinch and the dogs leave the area. It is all training training training..... a lot of work but a great payout in the end.

We have a Robin nesting on our front porch. If you try to look at her thought the window she gives you the evil glare..... getting the mail is fun too, she spends that time yelling at you from the power lines....

I better get my lunch packed. Looking forward to a short day....

I am very fortunate as my dogs could care less about eating or killing the chickens. Pooches my runt (6 lbs) Bichon actually comes in the pens with me to feed. Rides on the rider with me when i mow lawn and working on a harness so he can ride my motorcycle with me. I keep his hair short mainly because it matts so easy and he also is a farm dog and tends to roll in manure ALOT. He does have one free ranger hen that plays tag with him constantly. Rudy is a husky x jack russel and acts as though the chickens don't exist.

Deli, they are fat bottomed balls of fluff aren't they? Lol! Now hopefully Riga will take care of them when allowed out of jail again. I don't want to brood them, but I will if I have too. Too many losses for me not to. I could hope one of the other mommas would adopt them in when theirs hatch, but I don't know if they do that sort of thing with an age difference of 3 wks in chicks...???

I can't train the dog, if I can't train the people. My father can't be trained to not feed the dog from the table, nor can he be trained to not give the dog bones that will be chewed up and vomited onto the carpet every time, nor can he be trained to not give the cat milk which gives him the SH1TS.

76 years old and can't be convinced that he is not doing these animals any favors. He does expect the animals to understand commands in complete sentences though.

I gotta stop calling the dog dumb. He has trained his people very well.

The brats the dog ate were my father's supper plus left overs, so Karma does kinda work. They were on the table waiting for him to come and eat.

Good Morning good people !

Wow, so much going on and CRS has already settled in for the day !! Tried to comment last night but every time I tried to type a reply my screen would change.... had to reboot computer then just said forget it...
Anyway speaking of computers..... printers..... I have a HP F2480 printer that jammed up with paper. I yanked the paper out and now it doesn't want to pull the paper in...... Really freaking P!sses me off cause I had just bought new ink cartridges. I've tried everything. Of course went to Wally world where I got it and they don't have the same model any more or one that takes the same ink cartridge !!! Now that Really Really P!sses me off..... Mine takes a #60 and the new ones (of the cheaper ones) takes a #61 cartridge.. Why on earth do they do that.... I know it's all about money...but I"m so disgusted that I may not even buy another HP printer in my life... I probably have 5 already for the junk yard....... Anyone know if the 61's and 60's are interchangeable ?
Now I"m having keyboard problems again !!! Hope the rest of my day doesn't go like this.

Amyable, tell Julie I'm thinking about her, where is she going for treatment? TG it hasn't spread. My tumor was 5 cm. which is about 2.5 inches. So 2cm is not tiny by any means. No chemo then? Just curious, how old is Julie if she doesn't mind me asking? I know CC won't divulge her age ! I am so glad they didn't pass it off as non cancer because of her young age which they do a lot !!!

Cali girl is doing great... bought her a kong and stuck some treats in it while I was gone yesterday. She is a true little lover... she fit right in with the other girls.

Bigfam....I think you need to give me that poodle !!!!! But before you do he does need to be fixed.... Should of / could of been done when he was a lot younger. All they need to be is 3 lbs for neuter and 3 months for a rabies....
I agree, he does need training as all dogs do but don't wait until you go to a trainers. All they are going to do is basically teach you how to train him. You are going to be practicing with him at home so you may as well start now. I would walk him on the leash right through the yard where the chickens hang out so you disturb the chickens and get them to move. What you want to do is teach him to do is ignore them when they take flight or try to.
To late now but maybe a minature or toy poodle would have worked out better ??
Just curious, how is a service dog trained for autisim? Are you taking him to just obedience class or special thearpy service dog training. Poodles are very very very smart dogs. I'm sure once he knows what is asked he will come around. If not you know who would take him !!!! LOL

JJ You're Dad sounds a little set in his ways like someone we know on here. But I symathize with you, cat sh!ts are gross, dog pukes gross. And yes, the dog has trained its people well. ;) my dog is well on his way to giving it his best shot as well.

And just to get Mellie ALL wound up, Shadow bites and nips the kids in play. Even though I did everything I was supposed to do to prevent that, he has continued. They are his litter mates, not his superiors. So they have to come to training with me and assert THEIR dominance over him as well. I quit letting him be in the backyard loose with the kids after he ran up behind Halden, put his front paws on his shoulders and knocked him down face first. I know he only wants to play. But I cannot let my kid get a dog phobia on top of autism, so we have the separation game here. YES I NEED INTERVENTIONS ON SO MANY LEVELS IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY!!!

So now Melissa can tell me what I did wrong with that too. (i know you're trying to help and its from the heart) But I know it comes down to this: I had to start a job that wasn't honest with me as to what I'd be working hour wise and the duration of that training. We also started intensive in home therapy for autism in which I had to oversee while training for a new job. That in addition to keeping a household with 4 other children and a hubby. The dog's training didn't get squeezed in because there isn't enough of me to go around. So I now have to fix what has developed out of it. Luckily Shadow IS a smart dog and DOES want to please me. I just need guidance from an instructor to do it. Thank goodness I can finally get a class in now!!

Chicken question: I'm getting 0-2 eggs a day. How long will it take to get eggs again regularly after all the stress of the illnesses in my flock? Estimation and guesses welcome.

good morning, Annie just left to meet the "peach truck" and get a couple of boxes of peaches from Ga..

I just came in from adding the last of the screws to the purlins.. the mosquitoes made me quit early last night.. I took a pitcher ..

JJ, our resident feeds the dogs from the table whenever he can sneak it to them.. It is a constant thorn in my side with him.. the dogs are very smart, though.. they never come to my end of the table because they know it is useless.. Ken is 76 years old, too.. (going on 3 ) He knows all about "training" animals.. like,, if he feeds them , they will like him..

So far, neither dog has helped themselves to food from the table.. we did not teach them that, they just seem to understand where off limits is.. Unlike our old Anatolian who could stand flat footed and reach to the center of the table with her nose.. she once grabbed a frozen pizza off the table while Annie was setting the temp on the stove.. Annie grabbed Alex's collar and they struggled for the pizza.. during the struggle, the dog managed to eat the whole frozen pizza.. I of course sat in my chair and gave support by laughing my ***** off..

the roof ready for the final cover..

Note of interest, (to me at least )
.the oak tree in the back ground was accidentally planted as a seed in a pile of leaves I dumped out..

How old is this puppy now? Have you ever trained a dog before? Watch the Dog Whisperer? Holy man you have a lot on your hands here...... try not to use his crate as punishment too often or he is going to associate it as punishment and then you will have bigger issues. Crates are training tools of course, but not for reward/punishment. I know he is Halden's therapy dog, but he still needs training, and it is not as difficult as one would think. He does not need to be on a 6 foot leash when you are around the chickens, he should be on a short leash clipped to your belt-loop and you keep one hand on that leash to issue corrections when needed. Not when you are doing chores but at some point during the day when the chickens are roaming and you can get near them. It does not need to be for long periods of time either, 15-20 min work, just make sure you reward for good behavior IMMEDIATELY and correct the bad behavior IMMEDIATELY as well. Waiting to correct inappropriate behavior teaches your dog nothing since they have no idea what they have done wrong at that point. Stern voice, not a raised voice. Make him lay down and roll over so his belly is exposed and then have the chickens come over. Make sure he does NOT get up. He needs to be completely submissive around the birds, belly exposed and averted eyes. Anything less would get a correction. You need to show no fear; this dog needs to know he is at the very bottom of the hierarchy at you house. All other humans and animals are above his station in life. Poodles are very smart dogs; he should catch on pretty quickly.

I would say the next time you end up with a dead chick or chicken for unknown reasons, bring it to your dog (on a leash) and see what he does. ANYTHING other than a quick sniff and walk away should be corrected and of course have the chicken go after the dog too. I am sorry you are so far away! I am not trying to get on your case here, just trying to help you out!

FAM- I had forgotten this was supposed to be a therapy animal. This is absolutely SUPER advise and right on from a training standpoint. Being a destined to be a therapy animal it is even more vital he knows his position in the "pack". (Yep I like the whisperer too but also part of my animal background is working as a professional guard dog handler for an outfit at the time that was highly accredited and I owned an amazing German trained white shadow line German shepherd named Zapata Milko. My boss loved her so much she would use us to "show off" (do demonstrations) at the Milwaukee Dog Show. All of this of course was many MANY years ago. I still miss that dog :( )

JIM- totally agree with you on the rehoming/culling thing. In this case, I was referring to the dog and missed this was a therapy animal and meant that maybe if it couldn't be taught to leave the chicks alone it should go to someone who doesn't have birds (as long as they are made fully aware of the dog's "glitch")

Speaking of dogs and glitches my crazy teddy bear went nuts in the middle of the night(right next to my head of course) so I jump out of bed half awake and go charging out on the back porch thinking we had another bear in the yard only to realize someone must have come home from the bar and thought, "this is great time to be shooting off cherry bombs!" :smack

She's going to St Vinnies in Green Bay. No chemo so far (thank goodness) unless the genetic testing reveals something. She is early 40's, and no history in her family either. She'll know more in a couple weeks. Thanks for the well wishes!
