Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I don't even want to tell you all... BBP called it. She said her friend had a poodle who was a chicken killer. Shadow just about got another chicken about 30 min ago. This time in front of me telling him no, leave it, etc etc. lucky the bird managed to get away on her own. It was one of my broodies. She got off her nest and apparently was looking for treats. She got an attack dog instead. I checked her over real well and gave her scrambled eggs for her troubles poor thing.

Tomorrow it's dog with the choke collar and leash amongst the birds. He is NOT going to get away with this. I also called about the trainer guy. Here's what we can do. Not as good as Unks suggestion, but it's something. The dog trainer at the local vet will take Shadow for 4 days next week. (It's his last week at the clinic). He will work with him on the basics. Much of it Shadow has, but he will be responding to someone new every time, the first time. He does not know stay in any form, so that will be new. On the 4th day, the trainer will have a session with me to show me how I need to do it at home. This is before I start the class at the other place. He is only going to charge me $40 a day to work with Shadow from 10-3. The trainer used to work with developmentally disabled kids before getting into dog training, so he is cutting me a deal to help us get this started ASAP. I think it's a good start at least!

I must get that dog out with the birds several times a day and make him submit to me in front of them! This. Will. Stop.

Crap.... I gotta feed Halden. Therapy is done, gotta get a nap in, do chores, and get to work.
Later gators!

I had to reread this twice,,,,,good luck with that!

"He already knows, sit, stay, back, and wait. I have no idea if he knows down or not, never tried him with it."
ok,,I have no idea what the dog is already trained to do,,,,,first thing I usually work on is "NO" the rest will follow. Stick with one word commands that is basic dog training practice.

ETA: Heather sounds like a plan, choke collars are the way to go they need to be renamed for today's PC crowd.

Sorry Dan... He knows sit, lay down, come. He does not always do them. We try drop it, leave it, and no. He is having dreams of alpha hood which will be dramatically shattered when his testes are forcefully removed through his nose for messing with my remaining chickens. I may have my weak and down moments, but then I get mad. I get tough. And I'll be d@mned if a dog is gonna beat me in MY house. It can just take an awful lot to get me to that point of "he!! Or high water" Poor Poor Shadow...

My friend just told me the other day that she is rehoming that poodle. He killed a duck right in front of her and she started beating the dog. The kids were crying and she just decided it wasn't worth it. This lady owns a boarding facility for horses and also does the horse training. She has had other dogs and no problems teaching them to not touch the chickens. But this one just doesn't get it, or doesn't care.

Sometimes it's just, fortunately not too often, that the prey drive is more ingrained than the desire to please their humans or something's just went awry somewhere and they no longer ( or never did accept or recognize) their human as alpha. If your friend lost her cool that badly it clearly was best for her AND the dog to part ways. The trust had been broken on both sides and would most likely take years ( or never) to be restored.

Hi all--just sitting around here waiting for the girls to get home...then we head to the fair grounds to set up for judging tomorrow. Fun times just beginning here.
Great ideas Dan...and I see that Heather at least for something in the works for this coming week! Good job! Just remember to keep the "mad" in check when working with him. If they are as smart as everyone claims he will know that he can get the best of you if you are angry.

I sure hope those girls get here soon...we are supposed to be there at 5:30!

I moved a bunch of birds around in the heat today. All babies are out of the house! YEAH! I am wondering if the few eggs in the hatcher from the power outage bunch will hatch...

THe weirdest move was the mama with the cuckoo marans babies and OEs. WHen I got her out of the little cage I put her in a big flight cage in the yard. Ahe seemed very happy. I added her 10 babies and she just started attacking them! I dont know what is up but if she keeps doing that I will just turn her loose and let them stay in there by themselves...until the rest come back from Cuties' place.
OOPS--hear the girls gotta run! Later! TErriO

Evening everyone :frow
Stacy- adorable pups!
Bigfam - deep breath, chain him to your hip and leave the "fixing" to the vet

Love it when I can get the girls to help with the gardening chores. Cleaned the coop a couple weeks ago and put in a thick fresh layer of hay. Cleaned the coop today and I had some beautiful garden mulch. The hay was all broke down into nice soft pieces and completely seed free :D all I had to do was use my hay fork to scoop the clean stuff off the top leaving the dirt etc. To sweep up. Since I scoop the poop every morning there was no real mess. I especially like to use this in the greenhouse. I normally start this in the early spring but the weather was just too lousy and cold so I was forced to use oat straw the girls hadn't worked on around the early plantings so now, because of all the rain, I have oat grass growing everywhere.
