Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning, all cuppa'd up.. have to go get feed for the small chicks..

Had the feeder covered so the chicks can't jump in and get stuck.. so what do they do ? crawl in through the bottom.. found 5 dead ones jammed in there this morning..
You just can't outsmart a chicken bent on killing himself..

had a response to my peacock ad and one for some guineas.. I am a bit leary about the peacock response.. just the wording of the response sounds bogus.. more questions about where am I than about the birds.. proceed with caution on this one..

going to burn on the stump some more this afternoon.. It is sticking up about 6 inches and is about 2 feet across.. I burnt about a third of it away in the couple of hours I spent with it yesterday. today I am going to use some nice dry white oak scraps for the fire.. I plan to have no stump left by tonight.. It is a soft maple stump,, not completely dry.. just 6 feet from the corner of the house,, Once it is gone, I will be able to plow snow better..

lots to do today,, prolly won't get anything done..

Sorry Vicki, I don't recall your chicken questions.. btw, my questions seldom get answered either.. guess we have to ask easier questions,,

.....

Thanks Delish!!! I have been adding vitamins to water..can you mix ACV with vitamins or should I just use ACV? I will try the powdered milk and liver. Thanks!
I am trying to get my copy to work..it is not working so good.
I would add them together for now. You do not need much ACV

My Vet said one level teaspoon in one quart of water. I am trying to paste the order and it is not working. I know many are gong to argue, however it was prescribed by a licensed Avian bird vet.

Jim, I wonder if there is some sort of scammer on cl. I have bunnies advertised. I also got a weird email. They wanted me to respond to another adress. I did not think anything of it. I responded once. They do not seem to know the details of my ad... informed me they were on a hearing aid phone... asked for all of my personal info... I will not be responding to that one again.
So guys, I guess be carefull.

Hi all--Vicky your response made me chuckle for sure! I agree with Jim (OMG) especially if this is the same bird that was injured as a youngster Colton...I am betting that the hip is weak. You can keep him separate if you have the means so he isnt jumping on hens and injuring it further, otherwise just let him be.

Welcome Fonz...great talking to you on the phone the other day--I hope Taffy will be fine soon. The funny thing is that I have pics to post of my button quail today that is holding her wing out....definitely NOT what Taffy has going on though!

Sorry about missing your questions Vickie--I hope you got it all worked out...you seem like a pretty smart cookie so I bet you did fine!

Here are the pics of my button quail's wing...yes Cuties, it is the one I got from you. At first I though she had snagged it in the bars of the cage and twisted or broke it. Withing two weeks she was tripping on it so I took her out to check it...well, what do you think?

She was really growing her feathers back nicely before this thing...and she has been laying every day now! I tried aspirating since I assumed it was an abscess...nope, it is filled with blood! I didnt want to open it further because that would be a lot of blood to loose for such a little thing.
Any ideas anyone?
OK--I have to get out of this chair...it is NOT HOT and I need to finish wahat I started in the garden yesterday.
Oh BigFam--your day sounds suspiciously like some of mine do (but with different stuff) Let us know how you do with that list! Good luck is all I can say. THere better be some family pics up here soon...especially the bloopers! And watch out for Fonz...she may just give you a run for your money!
CC--much better now that you banged your head! You probably feel better too I am guessing?
Hey Cind--isnt there a free clinic you could go to? We have one here in Jefferson...there has got to be something there too. You probably should have an x-ray to be sure your lungs and other organs arent in imminent danger from fragments or "pokie parts" if you did indeed bread a rib!

Have a good one! TerriO

Cuties: Yes Cocci is present in all chickens, it is when it gets out of balance that there is probelms. I beleive the most common causes of it to get out of hand is: stress and moisture/contact with wet poo. I am pretty sure that "LAtte" was from the stress caused by the traveling and new home. The other chick I have in with her has sailed through this with no issues so think my lil lady is more delicate. Reading my "Chicken Health Handbook" best prevention is a wire bottomc age so they are not ever sitting on wet droppings.

all you can do for a broken rib is bind it.. get some of that cloth tape like they use on sprained ankles etc.. and have somebody wrap it around the broken rib area rather tightly.. immediate relief,, and you will be able to take a full breath again.. been there and done it a couple of times..

Do you mean once they aree sick? Or all the time?

Mine free range. I could not force them to live in cages like that...

I did put the sick hen in a rabbit cage tho. And breach city when she passed. I got mine the weekend after yours. She held on for a bit. But I think making the trip after she wasnt feeling goodwas hard on her :-(

To, I hope you figure out that quail soon!

We realised right away, buttons are not our thing!

Cuties: If they have Cocci, its best to have them on a cage bottom. Also, have read that many recommend this when chicks. In the past, I have had them in pine shavings and fed medicated food and had no problems ever. This time I think I stressed the chick out with 4 hours travel, and then was on a wood bottom floor no medicated fed and she got Cocci.

Vicki, I am so sorry noone answered your questions. To be honest, I don't recall them either. Sorry.

I do think it has alot to do with what Ang said about the sheer number of posts to read & then forgetting most of it. I know I am guilty of that. And I have been trying not to post too much because of all the doubles. I hope you found someone to answer your questions. If not, please repost & I will try to help.

Cindy, speaking of CRS, I am so sorry to hear about your rib(s). Ouch! Use a stepstool, woman! I hope you can get it looked at & fixed/taped up soon.

Colton, sorry to hear about your roo. I have no advice for you, but I hope he gets better for you.

Cuties, Ang is correct about the cocci. It is everywhere & is carried by chickens. It can become opportunistic if a chicken's immune system becomes compromised, usually due to stress &/or illness. It sounds like you are doing everything right. Sometimes chickens just get sick.

And it is usually the favs, too.

Hope he gets better for you.

Ang, I have no real experience (just suspected) with cocci so I have no concrete answers for you. I would get the recheck, then make sure the chick seems 100% better before reintegration. Too much stress from others can send the chick into another bout of some illness. It might be that the bird just isn't healthy & might not get better, or have on & off sickness its entire life. Brace yourself for that possibility. It isn't anyones fault, it just happens sometimes. You are doing everything you can.

Del, save your copy to your pictures folder, then upload from there. For some reason, BYC doesn't like pasting things.

Terri, no clue about your poor quail. Sorry.

Watch out for the whack jobs!

Ok, got to get something done today. Have a great one!
