Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Sorry raimnal.

Jim, it is a Canadian adult. If it had angel wing, wouldn't she have been born that way? She is fat and healthy. Just a wing that wont properly tuck. And broken, bent feathers.
She is wild, but I think something happened. If I could fix her up to fly away, thats what I'd like to do...
angel wing does not always show up right away.. when the feathers are good and forming, that's when it happens.. maybe it happens before that, but it is not noticeable ..??

My goose is a right winger.. I read somewhere that left wing is more common..

why don't you take a picture so we don't have to imagine what it looks like ..

Afternoon All...I don't have many fans when it comes to my opinion on cross beak. It's the breeding and the genetics causing it...and the lame hot spot in the bator doesn't sit well with me other than a excuse...I'll bet there is more than just one. The folks don't cull and keep breeding the bad trait...OK...I"M DONE!

Bigz, I'm just curious. I know Brahmas tend to hold a soft spot with you. I'm curious as to what you like about them. All I've ever really heard was that they eat a ton and don't lay much. But I have no idea where I saw that from, so can't consider the source at all. So, if yah have the time, can you tell me what you like about them? (This way I CAN consider the source ;))

I pretty much agree. My instincts say cross beak is genetic. Cull at hatch. This is my very first exposure to cross beak, and I did not recognize it. I have not found out much about it, I would appreciate all information you have on it. It is hard to dispute with a breeder who has been breeding and showing chickens for over 30 years. I totally agree with culling all genetic deformities out of any breeding program.

Oh and I never told you guys about the young bald eagle who's been cruising my place like its a food court at the mall. It just flies over real slow. Several times a day. Really graceful, but a young bald eagle, since it doesn't have much white on its head yet. The one day I hear George make some funny noises and his chicks all go scattering. I'm standing next to the pool since Halden and the therapist are in it. So George comes scooting over to me and is hiding behind my legs peeking his head out looking at the sky. That eagle was about 25 ft straight up above me, just hovering almost. I swear it was thinking about making a go for George even with me in the way! Kinda scary actually! Nothing has been grabbed yet, but I won't be surprised if it happens.

I also have 2 new Deli babies hatched now. That leaves me with a 3 wk old and the2 new ones. I took the Riga orphan in the house today and cleaned it up. I think it was going for a dip in the fermented feed, or it got caught in a food fight! Then we sat with it wrapped in a towel and just kept it warm, and dry, and patted its head. Then it got spoiled with some tiny bits of bread. And there were NO big chickens running it over to get to it. If a chick could smile, then it was! Very sweet baby, but we put it back outside. Riga lets it follow her around. Some of the teenager chicks are ok with it. At night, I've been throwing Riga and baby in lock down so I know baby has a warm body. But I have to put Riga in there, and have to locate baby to put in there to. I hate to separate it though, and brood a singleton, because it is already an accepted member of the flock. So a little extra care and talc from me I think, but keep it with the birds.

Ok.... Back to work!

Bigfam...I really do love the brahmas. While not only being Winter hardy, they do well in the heat of Summer...providing they have shade and cool water...yep, your right about their ability to consume feed. They are a big bird, and only lay med size eggs for their first year....laying larger eggs when they become adults...however, nothing compared to the laying breeds. They do lay every day while young and at least every other day after...not bad for a heritage breed. The nutrition in a medium egg is the same as a large...so...why do folks worry about size? LOL! (besides you bigfam)

The brahmas, are truly the majestic ones...they have that special trait that make them worthy of having them on the farm or backyard...they will win you over, and earn their feed.....plus they are pretty.

That's a start....

Bigz, how are they on broodiness? I like different birds in my flock, and lost a lot of variety. Through Deli and CC's generosity, I'm going to (hopefully) have a nice number of different orpingtons. But those do go broody, so I'm thinking of eggs still being laid.

Right now, I literally have a total of 8 adult birds who could/should lay. But most of them aren't for various reasons. I would really like to get a medium sized flock for eggs for me and others. I think some Brahmas would be a nice addition.

good afternoon,, what a day !! I finally got something to eat at 4 PM.. other than the strawberry shortcake I had for breakfast, that is..

Brent, what are your real feelings about cross beak ??

I sold 4 more buff orp pullets and 10 more keets.. the outside brooder is beginning to look like a ghost town.. a couple of turkeys and a few barocks..

I took pictures, TerriO,, hope they post good..

hanging gardens of wausau.. I used white string so it will be easier to find before I do my tilling.

1 1/4" pvc wired up to the rafters in line with the tomatoes below..

the pepper plants.. that is a 2 gallon sprinkling can for size comparison.
you can just make out the spindly new pepper plants in front of the sprinkler..

Jim I do not see your short cake or berry writings. Nope. Not a one. And I hope you are careful around your tomato plants. What if you were on a ladder or step stool and slipped, and accidentally hung yourself from your white string and PVC pipes. No more short cake for you... :D
