what do you use the comfrey for? I need to transplant some from my dad's if this snow ever goes away!

Comfry has been used for hundreds of years for burns, ulcers. setting bones, stomach ailments, digestion, and to make poultices(sp) for sprains and swelling. It is less fiber than grasses when fed to cattle, pigs and poultry, yet rich in nutrition for the fiber.
About a hundred years ago some one said it was toxic and it fell out of favor. No controlled testing has been done on if it is toxic or not. It is listed in all herb books as: SUSPECTED CARCINOGEN

It is used in teas and salads and makes great compost for the garden.

interesting! Do you use it as feed?

12 hour days will do that to a person..do you get at least 8 hours of sleep?
I am thinking you are laughing at this statement!!!!

I'm trying to make a make-shift turner in my home made incubator. Do you think 2 inches is enough tilt movement to keep them moving? By 2 I mean when one end is all the way down to all the way up is 2 inches. If not I'll have to do some tweaking to make room for more movement.
I usually use an egg carton under one end...what is that ? about 3" tall? I think you are good.

OK--DH says the spuds are done...now for some HM kraut!
Have a good one--TerriO

Just John...been a while!

JJ you are so full of caca.....

Deli, no debate. Just about everything is a carcinogen...... I think our grandmothers knew what they were doing.

Bought the kittens some new kitty toys today, went grocery shopping at Woodman's, picked up my BIL's b-day present, picked up softball supplies for youngest DD....... oh yes, I also picked up the rest of the ingredients for the cat food.

So I mixed up the raw rabbit slop and gave it to the cats. As predicted, the old man was not thrilled about it but the old lady thought it was pretty darn good. We will see how long it takes the old man to come around. I will be happy if he eats a little bit.

Since I am apparently one of the 'impatient' crowd...

Ok you can see by the photo I took the old tray it came with out that I used last year and put in this wire section from a closet organizer and zip tied it to a piece of pvc pipe I run thru both sides so I can turn it back and forth from the outside as my biggest concern was having to open it at least 3 times a day and I wanted a more technical turner more like a bought one but just couldn't get my brain to engineer quick enough as I have 3 dozen eggs coming tomorrow I have to set. I also screwed part of a container I cut to the wall and added a piece of pvc to add water for humidity. The gaps you can see where the old tray slid in is the distance of travel the tray will move, that is where I got the 2 in from. I hope it works, if not the eggs I'm setting are just barnyard mix exactly for this purpose of testing so if something does go wrong I'm not out anything other than a bit of electricity. I use the Brinsea for my good eggs.

I plan on forming a hatching area below with some wire yet.

While looking out in the tack shed for supplies I found this steak cooler I picked up last year in hopes to build another incubator and after measuring all the parts from the Hova-bator including turner will fit inside with room enough to make a hatching area so after this hatch I'll transfer the parts over. The reason I think I'm having some problems with it is the people that had it put it in their basement or somewhere and rats chewed up the edges so it doesn't seal properly. Thanks Jim the duct tape is working well. I did have one minor mishap this evening. I've been cleaning as I have a home visit early tomorrow and must of accidentally unplugged the Hova. When I noticed the temp only got down to about 88deg, those were just set at 8:30 lastnight so i hope it didn't do any damage. Temp is back up and running steady now.
I hope the soc worker doesn't look down on me for clogging my living room with incubators. I have nowhere else to put them with a stable temp right now. I usually do all my hatching and brooding in my addition, but run outta firewood about a week ago so no heat in there.

Rainy evening to all! Luckily, we have not received snow. The chickens have such bad cabin fever that they didn't even go in the coop when it was raining this afternoon.

I know that I'm in the minority, but yuck to kraut!!!! I grew up eating it a lot and do not favor it at all.

bl4-congrats on the maters

Deli-how's the puppy (Cookie)? You still coming over tomorrow AM?

TO-I'll look at our calendar and schedule in some time for the kiddos to come out.

Amongst our group of breeders here, we should be able to get a good quality BLRW, eh?

Jim-how many of those pups you got left? I think CC and TO need one each.

I would think so. I just emailed someone near the cities about some chicks, but want to see the stock first. They are a member of BYC maybe someone has dealt with them before? Minniechickmama is the user name and Prairie Chick Poultry is the bus. name. If anyone has any dealings with this person good or bad, please let me know.
