Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Yeah, yeah, keep rubbing it in, people. I have yet to win one stinkin' thing in the raffles, even something I donated.

I got a real nice white ele, so I can't complain.

And as Bigz said, it is a cheap weekend. Donate some raffle prizes, buy some tickets. I think it is more than a fair deal. And it is lots of fun too, with great people.

Don't you think about that karma stuff, Cindy. That fall could have been really serious.

So glad to hear your dad is improving and out of the hospital, H&R!

That is great news. Cute bunnies. Those jeans make great material for chicken saddles. Very durable. The only problem is finding elastic that lasts.

I have had to replace the elastic on almost all of my saddles this year.

So Jim, how did your coffee-less day go yesterday? Blood pressure any better?

Cute pic, BBP. So sorry about all your losses. I hope it isn't the neighbors dog. I would be beyond furious too. Good luck.

Wooly, glad you found some BOs. You will have to post pics when you get them.

I think I am going to be one of those people going to bed early. The sun finally came out down here & it got hot! The sun & heat really wiped me out. Sweet dreams!

Hi All! Coming on early.

I don't know if I'm going to get Marans after all! I noticed Jasmine moved the nest a few inches, thought OK, maybe they are starting to hatch, after all they are due Mon. Well, I picker up and found 1egg! I felt around and buried in the straw was 1 more. I felt where the nest was and found the rest buried under some damp straw. They did not feel warm so I don't know when she moved the nest. She's a real good broody, don't know what went wrong.

OK, I'll enjoy my prizes. I do think the Draw and Pick is a good idea. That way if there is something you need you have a chance of getting it rather than something that may wind up in the White Elephant. There was some nice stuff there, but sometimes need trumps like or want.

I'll say Good Night Later

Barely any sun here today, the warmest it got was 74*.

I had a field trip day with the oldest DD today. Former grade school and high school teachers of mine were holding their annual Arts and Garden walk at their home. The husband isn't sixth grade teacher, and he recently had a liver and kidney transplant; this was his first weekend home since the surgery on the 6th of May. Since both of these teachers were influential to me, I thought I should stop in. Since my daughter is the artist and the wife is also my HS art teacher, I thought my DD would enjoy the visit. Unfortunately I did not get to see Mr. R ( he was napping) but we did have an enjoyable time viewing the gardens ( the peony flowers were bigger than softballs!), and the selection of art from local artists was quite impressive. I brought home a matched set of Raku fired stoneware, which I will post here tomorrow. Since we were close to the bf's house, we picked him up ( this was so he could pick up his brothers truck and drive it home ). After that, we headed over to my in-laws to do some duck maintenance. Wings were clipped, I turned over the manure and straw under their pen, dumped their old bedding on top of the turned manure, gave them fresh bedding and fresh water. They were very appreciative and I think my in-laws were too.

That was pretty much my day. My mom stopped in, I found out a 11yr old neighbor kid viciously attacked one of his friends and gave the kid a horrible compound fracture of the lower arm just by kicking the arm, and I tackled the front flower beds again.

That sums up my day. :)

Does anyone here know how to season cast iron cookware? I have a couple pans that I burned off, cleaned, then coated lightly with lard and baked at 375* for an hour. After doing it for a second time I was disappointed to see the 'coating' is uneven/spotted and sticky!
What did I do wrong? Do I have to burn these off and start over again?

Just keep going! It takes time and patience to get a good coat. Lard and bacon grease are the top 2 coatings so just keep at it. Add thin coats and store the pan on the top of the oven, leave it there when you bake and when your done baking ad another coat. Use it as much as you can for potatoes and other non "gooey" frying. Wipe it out or rinse. Try not to use soap. Use a nylon scraper to get tough spots out. re-coat after each use until well broken in. Iron pans have been #1 pan for me all my life. I broke in sets for all my kids too. Patiences grasshopper.... it will be all good in the end!

Thanks! I did them twice yesterday and wanted to keep doing them twice a day till they look good. I really want to get them done so I can start using them again. The #4 I used to cook eggs in and I loved it till it developed a bad/stuck on spot. The #9 I want to use as an everyday pan but mostly want to try fried chicken the way Mom used to make it.

How many coatings does it take when starting with new cast iron? I have two new covered pieces...Dutch ovens? ...that I've done several times (with oil) but they didn't take and I gave up.

good morning,

I am constantly re-tempering my fry pans.. Annie still thinks everything has to be washed in soap water..

It only takes ten minutes to do a pan..
put the pan on the stove and put a layer of oil in it just enough to cover the bottom real good.. Use a high temp oil..

get the pan hot, now take a flat spatula and begin scraping the pan.. at first you will see dry streaks where you scraped the oil away.. keep scraping until the scrape marks disappear and the scrape stays oily ..

all you are doing is working the oil into the pores of the pan.. when this is complete, you can immediately fry an egg without it sticking ..

two more turkeys hatched this morning.. I think that is 72/100 live.. we tossed about 5 giver uppers,, pipped and quit.. I think this hatch is over.. will send these home tonight, then give the remaining eggs another day or two..

the 7/6/14 guinea hatch is still coming up with early hatchers.. 3 more today.. by the time 7/6/14 gets here there won't be any left to hatch ..

My cuppa-less day fizzled,, by noon I had to have my fix.. blood pressure is OK on the high reading, a little high on the low side..

I joined a study on warfarin when I was just at the clinic.. no big deal. they will just monitor my records to see how warfarin and another med compare.. It is a 2 year study.. I am one of 25 people from Wausau who are involved.. I am #20.. so live or die, I will become a statistic ..
I like to think, since it is a 2 year study, that I have at least 2 years to live ..

I told my Dr that I liked those odds better than the 3 months he gave me until my next appointment ..

IDK what I am going to do today.. maybe take the lawn mower and windrow the dead grass and pick it up for the compost pile.. will make the next mowing go faster, too.. I think there are still some sticks from broken branches to pick up, too..

I need to butcher about 5 nice looking roosters.. nobody want them, can't sell or give them away.
pure bred Delawares.
