Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All!

Congrats on the hatch!

Well, I lost Salt, one of the ones that was broody.
sad.png
She was just fine in the afternoon when I checked on everyone (about 3:00) when I closed up at 7:30 she was about 3 ft from her nest in "submissive" position with her head stretched out, gasping for air! Looks like she threw up too. Most of the roosters are locked up but looks like the few who were out got her? Don't know what else it would be. She probably got up to eat and got nailed. Hens are a bit fragile when broody.

Guess that's it..... Night.

Thanks CC, Wildsam, and Cindlady!!

So far this morning it looks like I have 7. Yes I was up at 5:30 and checking LOL So far none of the BBS Eng Orps or Lav Faverolles have hatched. And it kind of seems like there are eggs missing from one of my proven moms hmmmmm (starting to think they have been missing for awhile). The other proven mom that had the dead/smelly half hatched chick under her-her tummy smells really bad. I stink my hand under checking the eggs/babies and my hand smells! I sure hope she doesn't have a ton of bacteria on her belly. Wonder if I should try and wipe/wash her belly or if it would just upset her and do no good? I guess it comes down to the strong survive?

Well Jim it looks like I'm a big time guinea failure, only 6 keets(started with 31, 19 went to lockdown) and one has splay leg I have legs taped with vet wrap. Since lastnight it's starting to use the other leg a teeny bit but not sure how long I'll give it. I guess considering those eggs were in the monster when it spiked and I'm really lucky to have any hatch. I had to help all 6 though. Their shells are extremely hard compared to chickens. I had the humidity at 75% or better during lockdown and it still didn't seem to help. I don't even know what color they are, never asked. Right now they are a lavender and really light off white chipmunk striped. Anyhow, I'll research more before I do those again.

I put 20 SS, 4 BO, 4 MaranxBO, 3 BLR EE, 8 Lav Orp EE, 3 Lav Orp, and 1 Cochin Bantam into lockdown lastnight.

Well starting next Tuesday I'll be taking Anellia to Chippewa and dropping her off with my daughter, she will have her from 8-12 unsupervised and then at 12:30 she goes with her dad until 4:30 when I pick her up. I'll be doing this 2 times a week for now and they are talking about extending it to 5 days a week in about a month. I like part of it but only part. I am so frustrated at my daughter now that I don't even know what to say, she called lastnight and told me she went to Eau Claire cty court and asked for them to remove the restraining order! It's only been 2 months its been in place and the daddy/ex has been very abusive in the past. I think she's trying to get back with him. Theirs a ton more to go along with this insanity but I won't bother explaining it to you all. If you can think of the worst things a girl can do to herself, well that's my daughter and it blows my mind!

And on top of it my other daughter is turning into her older sister over the past few months and I found out lastnight some crap that has really upset me about her behavior. She was racing cars with her 15 year old brother and teaching him to whip chitters down at the ****. I get we all were kids at one time but my son just started driving and is only allowed to drive to and from work. He has lost his car for now. See she met this guy, he's a real winner. On probation for 3 different felony theft of a vehicle charges on top of other multiple things. He's the most disrespectful kid I've had near me in a long time and I was so glad when they moved out a week ago. After reaming out my son about the car incident I also found out that the daughters bf tried giving him sleeping pills a few weeks ago. He will be lucky he ever comes near me again and I'm sure as hell he's not allowed at my house again.
I know my ramblings are all over the place and may not make sense but I'm pretty emotional about this and haven't slept all night trying to come with a solution on how I'm going to deal with the situation in the levelest headed manner I can which is very hard for me.

Found out that the BLRW from cuties has a broken leg which had caused her problem, so it was those darn roos who did it I'm sure.

Congrats Judy on the hatches and sorry Cindy for the loss.

Hope all is well with everyone.

good morning, I couldn't get online since early yesterday.. I really had to work at it today..

has anybody else been having problems with byc being real slow to respond to commands ?

we got the chicken coop done just as the storm blew in.. I even hosed it down all over inside..
I left the windows out to give it a good airing out.

the guineas that stopped after a good zip were probably exhausted.. those kinds I do help .
just remove the cap and whatever shell is stuck to them,, do NOT straighten out their neck.. If you do, you might just as well cull them immediately .. I could go into a long explanation why, but for now, just take my word for it..

Dora is properly bred,, usually, if a dog does the deed just once, it is enough.. I am sure Gus had his fair share of deeds.. Now Dora will have nothing to do with Gus, so that is another indication that she is not in heat anymore, and most likely well bred....
gives a new meaning to well bred, eh?

the main pin fell off of the tractor loader.. one of the two that hold the loader frame onto the tractor rear axle housing.. It looks like I will have to dis-assemble half the loader frame to get that pin back in..

It was a good thing that we were just one bucket load, (10 wheelbarrows) from finished..
Dan finished the coop cleaning with the wheelbarrow..
we took 5 bucketfuls to the new compost pile.. I have a nice pile of manure to spread onto the garden this fall..

It is close enough to the garden, so that if the bucket won't be working, I can use the back blade to spread it.

Ang, leave that poor cluck alone..

I have four confirmed clucks in the coop.. they all really put up a squawk when I took them off the nests to toss new wood fibers in.. none of them have any eggs.. and they are too skinny to butcher.. Annie's grandma used to call them freeloaders..

having a memorial/lunch for Barby's husband at 11 AM today..
I guess I should at least shave for it..

Just got home and I have 12 so far...2 more half pipped.. One of the recent ones has a goopy umbilical cord hanging...noticed some blood around nest too. Is there anything I can do for it? Should I take it out off the rough pine shavings and put it back if it makes it?

Ang, it depends on the hen... if she is a good broody mama, go for it. Maybe bring along a buddy too. But some hens will not accept the babies back.
Clark, sorry to hear about the blrw hen :,( how did you figure that one out? So sad.

Cuties: Just checked and the chick seems to be more alert and after reading on BYC, they can often absorb the rest of the yolk and recover just fine with this :) crossing my fingers.

Cind: Sorry to hear about Salt :-(

SCLark: Her leg broke from the roo? Argh! I swear I keep second guessing why to even keep roos!! So sorry to hear this!

Yep, the chick should be ok ang....sometimes they leave the egg a aliitle early but usually work out fine.

Hard to believe it's gonna be Sunday again...my official day off here on the hill...church and cocktails....seems just about right to me after a hard week of work. One needs to enjoy our freedom as long as we have it....Sundays like the one to come are pleasant for me....hope they last for years to come.

Delisha, today I took a picture of the birds I got from you. They are so funny.
That male does not have any white at all..He is really dark..please keep me updated with his color..I am wondering if they shipped me a partridge instead.
Your dotte has pretty yellow legs..they look like they are really growing fast.

Hi all, looking for one or two pullets, somewhere in the 8-14 week old range. Just getting started but lost one of our four birds earlier this week. Had an experienced chicken friend come over and look at the setup, remaining flock. All looks good, but daughter was just beside herself when she found Soup dead, and she still has moments.

We're southeast of madison about 20 minutes. Will be in the sheboygan area over the 4th weekend, and covering points in between on the return trip, likely saturday. Have no problem making an hour+ road trip for the right bird. Open to just about any cold tolerant, decent egg producer. Thanks.

robert
Hello Robert..I live in Racine co. I have several pullets in that age range. Silver laced Wyandotte, Ameracuana's, and a variety of different imported Orpingtons

Thanks CC, Wildsam, and Cindlady!!

you can bath her after she is done hatching. a little soap and water never hurt a chick or a chicken in this weather.

you can do something..but in most cases it works out just fine by leaving it alone. Other siblings help to shorten it too.

Congrats Angie and nice pic BBP.

CS, did I mention yet that the US got their rears handed to them?!?!?

And we even gave them a pretty long time to try too! lol

Yeah, after the humid hot dry spell of a couple of days (

) the rain came back with a vengeance late this afternoon. Set the entire backyard and the runs under water. The ducks loved it though! Could barely keep all the black and brown duckies apart later today after the storm! Just hope that everybody is okay after it...

The storm obviously canceled my plans on finishing the new duck house. So I guess unless it is pouring again tomorrow, I will try for then. Put the hinges and roof on and I can call this one done also! Then trying to put it in place and move one crowd in there (probably our oldest Saxony and Winnie the Pekin). Will empty one condo up for another group.

Also hoping that the lady from one of the swaps will meet up with me to take her already feathering in 3 Pekins and the little one that just hatched. She said that we'll do an even exchange for 2 Emden goslings. Does that sound like a fair exchange?

SO is just having our smallest Lady Amherst chick running all over him and the couch. He has been screaming pretty much all afternoon. That's just how they are, always complaining. But their high pitched screams are hurting my ears...
His brother, who lives on the same property and has some of the older pheasant chicks, told me this morning that they woke him up last night, flying back and forth over his head for hours til he was awake. I could not do that, it would drive me from one nightmare to another!

Okay, enough for today. Have a good night everybody, and stay dry (and uneaten by the skeeters!).

Yea, I watched.......sadly! We'll see who the last 2 are.

Well I wish her old aging body good health. I'm gonna have a long talk with DH.......

Ok to all of you that said I should not have intervened with that baby raccoon a couple of weeks ago...well guess which 2 baby raccoons showed up in Theo's dog house? I assume that it's the one I saved and it's sibling. When I had originally saved the raccoon the mother came to get it with one other baby. But tonight, one baby got away and Theo was barking madly at the other still in the house. I let him do his job and went inside, so I have no idea if it is still out there or not. He isn't barking so it's either dead or gone. I do have a question regarding Theo's safety in all of this. At what point should I worry that he might get injured or infected?
