Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Black walnuts produce a natural herbicide from their roots that will kill other plants, it is called jugIone (or something like that). I plan to plant them away from the homestead area itself and out along the edge of the fields where they will not cause havoc.
My sister had one in her yard and the walnut "skins" stained her car, driveway, sidewalk, hands, etc. every fall.

Jim, do you harvest the walnuts?

I did harvest about a bushel one year. lately the squirrels take pretty good care of them.
they are a chore to crack.
if you plan to use a hammer, do it in a small room, like a closet or an old phone booth. pieces will fly .
you can use a bench vise, but that is slow work and the pieces still fly..
we sent for a special nut cracker that worked very good.
I think we paid $40.oo for it

we had a cross breed german shepherd a long time ago.
I would give her one of the nuts and she would lay on the floor and roll it around in her mouth until she got it just right. then she would bite down and you would think her head exploded. she managed to dig the meat out . awesome.

I had a goose make a nest among the trees. she used twigs and leaves. not one out of a dozen eggs hatched. .

i mentioned squirrels. last summer I yanked out a couple of 10 foot high trees that the squirrels planted. I did not want them growing where they were.
Annie's cousin used to plant some nuts. he covered the bed with chicken wire so the squirrels couldn't dig the nuts out. after they were about a foot tall, he transplanted them all over the place. He owned a large mobile home court, so except for those trees, it was quite baron ..

I planted one black walnut tree that was self pollinating variety. I now have black walnut trees everywhere on my 20 acres from the squirrels planting the nuts everywhere....my variety grows quite fast and with their strong growth I have no need to stake them...on the other hand my hard maples do need staking if I transplant whips from the woods.
I collect wheelbarrows of black walnuts when they fall and dump them in the woods.....I made the mistake of planting my tree in the yard....be warned that they are a nasty dirty tree with their prawns and nuts that fall. I can't reach around the trunk of the first tree I planted, and seedlings that are off that tree are large trees that will be large enough to harvest in a few more years. I suppose if I could do over, I would still plant one, but not in the yard.

I forgot to mention that.
If you fail to pick up the nuts, and you hit one with the lawn mower , it makes an interesting projectile. like hitting a golf ball..
to get the husk off of the nut, an old fashioned corn sheller works quite well.. wear good surgical gloves , maybe two pairs at a time. you will not wash the stain off of your hands. it takes days for it to wear off..

I have heard of people just dumping them onto their driveway and driving over them for a few days to remove the husks. don't worry, you will not crack the nuts by doing this.

I collected a dozen eggs today, and our second goose egg of this season.

Good morning!
Congratulations on the switch to days CW. By the way, how did the snowplow work?
We have black walnut trees here and squirrels. I am constantly pulling out/transplanting the seedlings. We also have oak tree seedlings popping up here and there. I tend to leave those. Running over walnuts with a car is exactly what my mom did to remove the walnut husks.
Is Ollie back in one piece and running smoothly?
Although it snowed most of the day yesterday, none of it stuck.
Have a good day everyone. I am off to pick up my 20-month GS. :)

the plow truck sure beats snow blowing. It's a lot warmer when you don't have snow blowing in your face!

good snowing lightly morning,

good luck on the new job .
just don't burn your bridges behind you.
maybe in the future you might want to pick up a few extra hours

I used to be a baker at Dixie Creme donut shop.
I gave up that job on good terms,  a couple of years later,
I went back part time on weekends to make a few bucks.

yeah I'm definitely not a bridge burner. I've always tried everything I can to keep in good graces because as you said. Ya never know! Gotta make a run into town for some feed for my girls when the country store opens at 8. After that my day entails sleep and that's it. I'm gonna be all messed up working days for a while but it'll be worth it. I start march 20th and I wish today were the 19th

Changes here as well.

I have accepted a new position which requires us to relocate.

We will remain in WI, just closer to Terri and Robin and Cindy.......

Anyone looking to move to Weyauwega?????? :D

good evening,

Yes, Ollie is cured for now. It is nice to have the choke cable fixed so that it doesn't freeze up. I do not have to park next to the house next to a receptacle so I could thaw it out.

and changing the 10W oil to transmission oil is working to keep the gears from freezing. another no thaw situation.
it works so well I can shift through the gears without having the motor running.

15 eggs today.

I went to the dentist and had my tooth implant re-implanted.
I had it put in in 1977. if this fix holds up for that many years and then fails again, I am not going to fix it. I told my dentist that his hands will be too shaky by then.

Annie had the next appt after mine. she had a cavity on the side of her tooth filled.

going to Tomah tomorrow morning for hip X-rays. bro Dave is driving me there.
