I should have just brought the chicks in. There are only 3 silkies that are 11 weeks old in a temp pen and hutch but these below-zero temps aren't changing for a week. They've been stuck inside the 3'x3' hutch that has a cozy coop heater in the back of it. We've hauled a gallon jug of hot water out there every hour to sit next to a dish of water in the hutch so it wouldn't freeze so fast. That got old fast. Hubby built a "porch" to set over the pavers that are stairs to the hutch and hung a heat lamp from it. The hope is it will heat the pavers a bit so they'll be able to come out, see their heated waterer, be able to run over to get a drink, and run back. I guess we'll see in the morning how that works.
This is sure a lot of dinking around for 3 little chicks but oh, they're so adorable.
