Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hey All,
By tomorrow night I should be online way too much!!

So took a colt to get gelded today, interesting experience!...
And then picked up my barn owner, Joan from therapy, they are discharging her, cuz they can't think of anything more for her to do. SO MUCH IMPROVEMENT!!!
I may have a kewl new job, so think happy thoughts/jingles!
I then had to go get our snow blower and extra lumber from the neighbors at the old house, they were nice enough to let me chuck it over our back fence into their side yard!

so many things going on.. there is a tack/horse auction on saturday in Janesville... my client and I are going to go to.. tack only though!!
LOL

So hope to see you all online tomorrow.
Carol

WCC, I saw that done once: the silly horse snored through the entire thing! I thought it was pretty cool too!

Jim; you crack me up! I watched that show and the ending was just terrifying! One must note that the bears that did end up eating him were NOT the same ones he had been hanging with during shooting. They were some rogue bears looking for an easy snack!

David that is one niiiiiice coop! Your girls are gonna luv it!!!

Well, today was a beautiful day! Im glad we did not get beamed up to Canada (although I'm more then ready for the beaming technology to get here!).

So, I got my sawhorses for the rabbit cages and have one all set up. I can't hang them like Jim explained since I'd have to add beams to the ceiling of the garage. I have no idea how to do that, so I took the easiest route and used sawhorses!

Now, I need waterers, nest boxes, some wood boards for them to sit on off the wire, and a few rabbits and I'm all set!! I found a Californian breederdown the road in Edgerton of all places so I'll email her to see if she still breeds and has any availabe. The other breeder I found was in Portage.

I got my materials for my chicken yard and tomorrow I will start by sealing the wood for the frame work. Once that dries, Sunday dh will help build the frames and attach the fencing to the frame work and hopefully we will have it done so the Girls can roam in "controlled" freedom!! I'd love to free range them but I found out that "technically" we are not zoned for chickens. I can't believe that since I live right next door to a dairy, but according to "the Township" I'm not supposed to have them. But as long as no one complains and we keep it on the down lo, then the "Township won't say boo nor do they care. So the Girls are getting a nice privacy lattic fenced yard. Then some nice flower pots and a little container garden along the outside fence line with a sign that says "Herb Garden". Oddly rabbits have no zone restrictions. Go figure.

I decided to plant some more fruit trees-some peaches and I think I will plant a hazelnut tree. well, gotta go, I have to go fold laundry before Criminal Minds comes on!
Have a great night!!

Hey all, I wanted to see if anyone in the Green Bay area would like a FREE chicken? I have 8 standard cochins, and one of the girls is being a bugger. She likes to pull the feathers out of the others. She will sometimes even try to eat them. I have tried changing her diet and putting her in "timeout" for a week, but it isn't working. She goes back to bullying the others within a couple of days. She even is pecking at the rooster... and he lets her! They are all about 8 months old and just started laying medium eggs. She is a sweet girl to me. She used to be my favorite because she would roost on my leg while the others would go and roost somewhere else. But I just can't have her terrorizing the rest of my flock! I think she would be a great addition to another well-established flock where she is back at the bottom again. Any questions, or any takers?

Here she is in "timeout"

Another pic of her.

I have a young Columbian Cochin Bantam pullet I've been thinking about letting go of. She just doesn't have the type/color I'm looking to breed. I don't have a picture of her at the moment, but here are her parents:

Just let me know if you're interested.

Because I'll be hatching PLENTY of chicks from here on out - I just picked up a cabinet 'bator today! An antique redwood Leahy, approx. 600 egg capacity.
wee.gif

It's supposedly in working order - the couple I bought it from were hatching in it up until 2 years ago, and it's sat in their barn since then. It's in decent condition, but it's going to be a beauty once I have it fully restored. It still has the original wood-stain on 2 sides, but the other two sides were painted in an icky slightly-translucent brown paint (apparently, the 'bator was sitting in a corner - the explains the great condition of two of the sides, and the other two being painted), so we're trying to figure out how to remove the paint while still retaining as much of the original stain as possible. The water tray is pretty rusted and corroded, and all the hinges need replacing, but the door latch is still perfect...the original glass in the door was broken at one point, so the couple I bought it from has replaced it, and the sealant around the edges is a bit sloppy, so I'll probably re-do that at some point...but this thing is going to last FOREVER! I'll eventually figure out what electrical elements need replacing - everything should be inter-changeable/replaceable with a corresponding G.Q.F part. It's going to be a project, but it's going to pay off in the end!

Today's been a good day!

Now, off to get the latest batch of Columbian Cochin eggs into the hatcher!

CrazyForCochins927 - If that Splash girl was a Bantam, I'd give her a home in a heartbeat! She's beautiful!

Oh no! How terrible. I am so sorry to hear that.
CrazyForCochins927, that is a beautiful chicken. So are yours, SweetFolly.
Hello, all!

I'm down in the SE & am a proud Packer, Paul Menard, and H-D fanatic. And am really getting sick of spring taking it's sweet time getting here!

C4C, she's real pretty. Maybe putting 'blinkers' on her would work? BCC uses them, they are little plastic blinders that clip right into the chickens' nostrils. They are used to deter pecking. If it doesn't work, well, I don't have any Cochins.

BBP, that's so sad!

What in the world is going on around here with all the critters??

That's awesome about the Green Bay ordinance! Wonder if it will make the news...'Titletown goes to the birds'

hey otonoh,

Jim, fingers crossed for ducks. What kind(s) do you hatch?

BL4 and WCC, I always wondered how gelding was done. I've helped with castrating calves, not the nicest thing in the world.

Because I'll be hatching PLENTY of chicks from here on out - I just picked up a cabinet 'bator today! An antique redwood Leahy, approx. 600 egg capacity.

Look out world, there's no stopping Sweetfolly now!!

Playing around with an ID system, because that's the kind of numbers/organization/OCD person I am. :p What can I say, I like colors and tabs and things...office depot is my toy store.

So anyhoo, have been less than enamored with the options for leg bands, have to get a whole pack of each number, limited choices on numbers, would have to pick up and dust off the number to read, etc., so decided I'd do zip ties and assign a color code to ID each bird. I really wanted a system that never repeats itself, so birds always have their own number so that I can track lineage/keep records on breeding projects.

I found some handy dandy little and medium sized zip ties at TSC (White, Black, Green, Red, Yellow) and at Home Depot (Hot pink, Yellow Green, Gold, Light Blue, and Orange). 10 colors, poifect.

Attributed the colors in kind of a reverse rainbow order with white and black being 1 and 2, since those will be the most used by far, especially this year.

1 - white
2 - black
3 - blue
4 - green
5 - yellow-green (fluorescent yellow)
6 - yellow (have a nice day yellow)
7 - gold
8 - orange
9 - hot pink
10 - red

Won't take my head long enough to remember those numbers since the colors are in order. Can make individual numbers pretty easily, I figure.

Left leg - Top Band - year (2011 = white for 1), Bottom Band - Pen/Project number (1 though 10 with corresponding toe-punch numbers if I choose to use them to pen/project in day old chicks)
Right leg - Individual number, top to bottom if more than 1 number

Gives me the ability to number all birds in a X-Y-ZZ pattern. So the 4th little blue Ameraucana split to fuzzy is tagged white/blue L, green R = 2011-3-4 for 4th chick in pen 3 from 2011.

Easy enough to snip them off and replace as they outgrow, visually identifyable from a distance, individually numbered. Think it'll work for me.

Do you guys tag anything? Any preferences on type or system?

Just curious.
