Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

So Fleet has DE. Dooner, is it food grade? I've decided to start using it this year. Does anyone get their feed as whole grains from a feed mill? I did a few orders last year that way, but they grind it so fine that my birds sneeze. Isn't that what gizzards are for anyways?? I'd rather have it mixed as whole grain, less waste that way too.

The swap was a success, I'd say. Unloaded the runners (thanks again Jim for the contact), got the 4 Jaerhons from Raimnel, and picked up 12 new chicks - Delaware, Buckeye, Buff Orp. Oh, and met Tyler of Purely Poultry and bought a Salatin book from him. I couldn't believe how many rabbits were there

Equal parts chicken and rabbit, I think. The Jaerhons are real pretty, even though the roo became disconnected from his tail feathers due to escapage

Hopefully they needed to be molted anyway, haha. Nice to chat with Raimnel and her hubby - we'll see ya again at the Bash!

Got home after the swap and decided last second to go with DH and FIL to an auction in Crivitz. Snagged a dresser, a box of antique canning jar caps, and two old milking stools. Very happy with my finds. DH got some old rakes and pitchforks; he loves old tools. A very long but productive day - and out of the house, a stay-at-home mom's dream!

And should have chicks hatching in 4 days from my broody - all the eggs are developing, with nice air sacks. C'mon babies

I believe so, that is what I asked the clerk. While it does say the words food and grade, it also says something else but the bag did say for various animals including poultry. There is a sticker onthe bag that says powder. I may put a little in the food, but mostly plan on using in the shavings inthe coop and their sandbox cuz I read it helps control parasites. Also, I dont know if it is the food or my hens, but my shells are super thick. Hard to break them without getting a little shell in the eggs.

dk hope the meds help with the lymes, I've heard nothing good about it. Think with as much time as I spend in the woods it's just a matter of time. WCc think your niece will be asking for a horse, hope you have room! Sounds like all had a good time at the swap! Raim

Found out the issue with the one egg with the black spot..... the end of the egg cracked so bacteria was able to get in along with air. Poor baby

Looks like Maggie is thinking about going broodie and Taffy has quit laying..... do the eggs get smaller when they start to wind down on egg production?

Beautiful sunny day! I am going up to Valders today with a friend to help her look at a horse (not that I know much of anything, just where to stand, hold the rope, and get out of the way!).

Eggs in the bator look good! I think I have a few clears in both the chickens and the ducks, I will know more in a few days.

Off to drop off my neighbor's new Oriole feeder. Coffee..........

Raimnel, I'm not generally the envious type, but man today I have it bad! You got goats! How awesome.

Years ago a friend I worked with was touched that my girls brought her a boquet of glads from my garden and sent us home with a little white baby goat. We had a lean-to off the garage, 1/2 of which was a pen, but no fence, so she roomed with the dog for about two months until we had time to fence in an area. She shared the overly large dog house we built for our dog (last time I was asked how big to build something! lol) and it worked out great, until... she learned to climb the 4' chain link fence. She was jealous because we would let the dog in the house and not her. She'd stand on the back steps looking in the kitchen window crying like crazy when Scruffy would come in the house. So when she escaped she went to the front porch and sat by the door, giving the door an occasional head bump until someone let her in. Then the only way to get her back into the back yard was to allow her to walk through the house, which was hysterical. She went to every room and looked in, then when she'd seen enough she'd walk to the back door. About once a week we'd go through this. One day I was sleeping (I worked midnights) and didn't hear her "knocking", so there she sat when the bus let the kids off at the end of our drive. As they were getting off the bus the driver says, "That's a strange looking dog." My girls said, "It's our goat!" Unfortunately the dog learned from the goat and she would run away. Finally we had no choice but to chain her in the backyard since the fence wouldn't keep her contained.

One morning when I arrived home late from work she was bleating like crazy and I panicked because our closest neighbor was only about 15 feet from our property line. I run around the house to to find Rosie, front feet on top of fence, "chatting" with Kate and her 80 year old mother as they drank their coffee on the back porch! Kate said they just loved talking to Rosie every morning!

And of course my kids were crazy over her. She'd play tag and hide and seek with them. What a great pet she was. I'm hoping that if we can buy the lot next door to us I'll be able to sneak a couple of little pygmy kids in eventually. I know my kids would be tickled (even though they are now 34 and 35) and of course the grandkids would have a ball with them. Keeping my fingers crossed that we'll have some great neighbors.

Good luck with your new pets. I think you're going to have a great time with them!

Oh! I miss my goats! I'm getting more someday. Maybe next spring if I can save enough money to fence off our property. You'll really enjoy those little guys. They can grow up to act just like dogs if given enough attention.
