Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Summer evening All...yep I agree with the weather having a laying factor...here anyways...when the weather was lousy this spring with days between sunshine and none....sunny days were nests with many eggs, for example.

Thanks for the kind words sent my way....

Good evening everyone...and welcome AVES! what a nice day for a horse show! We were out f there just as the sun was starting to really heat things up. DD19 got a 4th and a third and a first; to come out to 5th over all in the event. It was dressage, show jumping and cross country. He horse was very good. When I find my camera I will post a few pics!

When we got home I worked in the garden taking a big load of weeds to the goats. DH mowed the lawn. THen we went and had prime rib for dinner at the restaurant down the street. (delicious!) When we got home DH went outside to read (he is out there sleeping in his lawn chair right now....prob getting bitten up by skeeters!) and I went for a horseback ride! FINALLY I got to ride my horse! It felt good but he was pretty sassy since he hasnt had to work in a while. I hosed him off after the ride and he went out in the dirt and rolled like 5 times! So much for a clean horse...

Everyone seems to have been pretty busy getting ready for the heat wave...H&R I do not envy you having your fair this week.

I thought we were warm 2 weeks ago! I hope all the animals do OK in the weather...it is bad when they are stuck in cages and it is so hot.
Oh gee--there was so much I was going to respond to...didnt open another window this time so I have forgotten it all! Oh well--I need to go outside and get the animals put away--then I am heading off to bed too. Maybe I will let DH sleep outside all night...

then I wont have to listen to him snore! Oh darn...he just came in! SHucks....Sweet dreams everyone! Terri O

Thank you, thank you, thank you for not having 10+ pages for me to read!

DrH, FFF sounds yummy! And I'm glad to hear you've got a great cuke & raspberry harvest! You killed me with your description of your ex.

BL4 & TO, those are the cutest duckies!

SF, so good to hear from you. And congrats on the promo.

BBP, I would have guessed a coon. He is a cute bugger, though. So sorry about your loss.
hugs.gif
That is terrible. And so bold!

Bigz, Woo-Hoo!!!! I'm glad to hear about the doc's news for you.

Breac, hope Fred will be ok.

Carol, so sorry about losing the chick, and with the probs with Zeus.

Aves ! Happy to have you join us. Heat & bad weather, among other things, will cause a change in production, like Bigz, and MLH (oops!) said.

Sorry to all I've missed, but I'm falling asleep. Can't sleep whenever we go out of town.

DH decided that the night before we were to leave to go up north was the perfect time to finally go & pick the raspberies. Even though a lot blew off the bushes during the last storm (that the girls enjoyed emmensely), he still came in with almost a gallon of them. A GALLON. Like I didn't have enough crap to do getting everything packed up to leave bright & early in the morning.......

I think I'll be bringing raspberry bushes to the bash next year. Where is the smiley face with the devil's horns???
Here I was so worried about the "babies" not being able to figure out where to roost in the evenings without us to let them into their "area" for the night, but my orps were actually in the coop with the ladies tonight, while the aussies figured how to "climb" the dividing fence to roost up with my banties. My girls have finally grown up. Yippee!

Long day today, the kids got alot done today! We helped them wash the 24 birds that will go to fair- 8 of them are turkeys- took us about 4 hours to do this! They also helped get the 2 dogs groomed up for the show tomorrow- they do the dog show the Sunday before fair which is much nicer than cramming it in durning the fair time! SO as of tonight- they jsut have to finish rockets and prep their fresh food items being judged on Monday afternoon and label a few with the tags.

Tomorrow the dog show starts with check in about 8:30 ish and we probably will be done about 2:30 pm ish.

Off to watch a bit of T.V. and then bed.

OK Brent, I am not really in the gabby mood.. My mouth hurts like he11 tonight. I have Vicatin, but am resisting taking it.. However I did break down and took one a few minutes ago..It will kick in shortly..

I am glad you got a good report on your eye.. Is the next operation going to be just like the last one? sort of using up your whole summer, isn't it?

Something came during the day on Thursday and carried off mama turkey.. did not touch the 7 keets that she was brooding, though.. We caught them and put them in the brooder in the chicken coop.

we have 3 ducks setting on each their own eggs..

I gave the goose one pipped duck egg yesterday.. I did not check to see if it hatched yet.. she bites, ya know..

the chickens have hatched out about two dozen guinea keets this week, so far..

I shut down bator #2.. only have one going.. have one last batch of guinea eggs to set and that is going to be it for this summer.

the chickens we took out of the big outside brooder pen and put into the guinea pen still have not worked up the courage to go ooutside.. The feather picking has stopped in the brooder and feathers are growing back..

the peacock has decided that the top of the chimney is his roost for the nights.. As close as I can tell he is an indigo blue..
He is not very tame, but he does lay tight against the patio door as long as we do not bother him by opening the door..

I bought 27 five foot long 1/2" re-bar for staking the tomatoes.
today I made a stake pounder.. early tomorrow I want to try it out.. (before the sun get high and hot).. I can always resort to a hammer if it doesn't work..eh?

JIM!!!! Glad to see your back!!!

I must say, we were a bit worried, not like you to be off so long... even sick!

Aves....

MLH.... congrats on the chick!

BBP .... Sure is a cute little bugger.... but looks young, bet mom and another kit or 2 is still out there.

Not much to say, prepping for the heat. Froze 15 gallon jugs of water and a few smaller ones to try to keep the chickens cool. I'll rotate them through out the heat. Wish I had more big boxes to put them in.

good morning everyone,
jeez at 3:30 it was 75 degrees with 83% humidity. I pity the chickens, I may take them in the basement today, It is supposed to get worse.
I put in ice water twice yesterday but if it is gonna get in the 90's with heat indices in the 100's I fear we may lose some chickens.
Anybody doing anything to help cool the chickens?
Sorry I have been so quiet lately. I finished my 6th and final grad class this week.

:weee I must have gotten bumped off the forum because I haven't been getting any
update emails.
stay cool everyone.

Good Sweltering Morning All! Jim hope that tooth ache subsides soon! Sorry to hear about losing your hen! Cind when I was reading about the Gal. jugs thought you were going to say you were gonna line your bed with them.

otonoh I'm opening the garage door enough for them to get in and out, it's a block garage and it stays cooler in there. Plus changing out their waterers a couple times a day. CC don't think you'll be complaining about the berries when your eating them.
gig.gif
If it's not not raining tomorrow morning think I'll have to go on a walk about to get some more think more will be ripe by then.

This has been my worst year for eggs. ODr.H Congrats on the showing! MLH glad to hear the butchering wasn't tramatic. Sounds like you got some "good stuff" at the garbage sales and Tobacco Fest. Congrats on the first born!

fm! BBP glad you got the critter! Nasty lil beastie! Just realized that FT is AWOL maybe that's why there's not so much reading.

WCc sounds like your ride could have been better. I tore out all the trim in the bedroom yesterday and much to my disappointment found that the plywood is only a 1/4" thick. So much for my coop extention. Putting up 1/2" drywall course that'll be a pain with the 1/4" difference with the trim and outlets. I pulled one corner of the plywood away and was surprised to find the celulose insulation hadn't settled at all but man is it gonna be a mess to remove. Long dusty day ahead. But the Norge is stocked so I'll be alright.

Find a cool spot and stay there!

good sweltering morning back atcha.. I got up at 6am and after one cuppa, headed out to the garden.. I got 21 tomatoes staked, all the watering and feeding done, rolled the compost pile with the tractor, and back in the house by 7:50am
BTW, the post driver worked perfectly.. To the untrained eye it looks only like a 3/4" x 18" piece of pipe with an end cap on it.. I stuffed about an inch of cloth in it to cushion the blow to the cast iron end cap..

meanwhile, Annie picked a couple of quarts of cherries and 1 gallon of raspberries.. one raw raspberry, graham cracker crust pie covered with real whipped cream coming right up !!! Yummmmm

I took a vicadin and 3 Ibuprofin this morning.. I am feeling no pain.. actually I am not feeling a thing.. LOL

No FT yet today.. Hope she is OK.. Maybe somebody pulled the power cord to Nashville..

I have to call one of my farmer friends and get a bundle of used baling strings to tie up my tomatoes.. I usually get enough string from a blacktop job along a road,, but I have not seen any projects lately.. after the job is finished, they just leave the string lay there to rot..

Hi again,, Dr H. you do not have to remount the electrical boxes. just put shims at the mounting screws of the receptacles.. I think they make shims just for that,, but if you do not have too many to do,, just use a stack of tiny flat washers or/and threaded nuts..
