FT I looked and nothing much on news for the fire. On WEAU.com there is 2 sentences>2nd page...fire,,,such and such adress,,,,,sprinkler system put most of it out,,,,,est $5K damage.

I didnt mean to say the person cared about birds, just trying to get across that I thought it so bizarre saving birds and starting fire. Seems like a polar opposites of each other. I probably worded it wrong. I just got the inside scoop because my friend called me. They do have someone in custody, and yes I agree inside job.

kristip thats cute >>> growling

I was reading a post recently on BYC where someone put ice cubes in a double ziplock baggy and had the hen sit on those. I think it took about 24 hrs to cure her. Just thought I would pass that lil tidbit on.

Re: Garlic
My friend used to grow 13 varieties and now she's narrowed the #s down by grading for flavor, ease of peeling and length of storage. I planted: Music, Siberian, Polish Jenn, Rom Red Porcelain & Georgia Crystal. She offered me Elephant garlic, too, but I declined. I've grown that in the past and wasn't that impressed with the flavor. (I think I am so excited about the garlic I planted because each head had huge individual cloves with only 4-6 per head. That will substantially reduce my peeling time next year as I cook with garlic almost every day!) My friend had her basement custom designed for her canning & root cellar storage and has a custom open front cabinet for her garlic (!) with little pull out drawers like shelves (only they're not solid bottomed for ventilation) and the unit is from the floor to ceiling high! The whole area is temperature and humidity controlled! Never seen anything like it and was/am so impressed!.... She's really a remarkable woman and she puts me to shame with everything she gets done in a day when she's at least 10 years older than me!

Oh, yeah, this Saturday I'm getting together with a bunch of people and we're going to make fresh apple cider! Pretty happy about that! I love fresh cider but didn't buy any this year (didn't get to the orchard) and I don't typically like/buy the processed ones found in grocery stores. We had to preorder our apples ($9 a bushel = 3 gal. -- what a steal as opposed to $6 a gallon at the orchard 2 yrs. ago) and will have to volunteer 2-3 hrs (helping make the cider) and then we can leave with our fresh cider! I am REALLY excited about this! I especially love hot spiced cider! We'll keep 2 gallons for drinking and then we'll play around with fermenting the 3rd.... yum, yum!

Elaine

Hey, tiki244, you still have time to plant garlic this year -- or, you can plant it in the Spring and harvest in July and then replant some in the Fall. The Spring planted crop won't give you as big heads but it's still worth the effort for fresh garlic & this way you won't lose a whole year.

Yep right on about the venzun...the young ones have light colored meat and have no flavor. The mature deer have red meat...I prefer the meat of bucks. it is very tender and even 3.5 year olds are great. The one i shot was 2.5 and delicious. Always trim any fat or silver skin from your meat. the gamey taste is from the fat left on the meat...in my opinion. Venzun does have specific flavor like any different meat does...not gamey though, unless you are use to beef fat...the lean meat lacks the fat of beef.

Yep, chickens do definitley growl...mine do at each other all the time, especially when given treats. Mine always clean up the deer carcuss....nothing goes to waste. Mine had 3" of fat on the hams that was trimmed off for the suet feeder for the wild birds. They weren't filled for more than afew minutes before the chickadees found them. i stashed a bag in the freezer for them. The woodpeckers will join in before long.

Glad you made some of my venzun italian sausage Jim....I hate posting recipes on deaf ears....

Our young lady Reese's Peanut Butter Cup is sitting on 5 fertilized eggs. 2 Americanas, 2 Leghorns and a brown egg from a random chicken. The sires are unknown. Definitely looking forward to what is to come.

YOu could take an egg and stick it in the freezer, and give her that to sit on!!

Why not just let her go broody, continue to take the eggs away everyday. She will come out of it on her own. You are dealing with mother nature here. What kind of chicken is it again?

Maybe put some none fertile eggs under her and keep removing the fertile ones. After she realizes they arent'going to hatch she will give up.

I personally don't break up a broody hen. Do make sure she is eating and drinking however.

Good Luck.
