Good morning! BL4--doncha know that you get your coffee BEFORE logging on?
See? Proof! Welcome to all the new typists!
Yes, we have been talking about winterizing our coops quite a bit on here...I am won of the few that does not believe in heating for chickens. I have my coops in two old sheds, One group actually can go into the whole shed, the other has a dog cage inside the shed for shelter that is small (hopefully soon to be expanded--just have to find the time and the urge!) The third bunch lives in a large pen in the barn. There is really no insulation to speak of in any of the structures. One is draft free. All the birds go outside during the day and free range except the ones in the barn. I dont really have any problems with them getting sick--there is "plenty" of ventilation! I have kept them this way for 22 years now at this place. Yes, I would love to have a state of the art coop...not happening here...I do provide extended light hours for them and they lay well. I tried Jim's 24/7 light idea in the barn and am now getting 11 eggs out of 12 hens per day! I am sure that I go through much more feed in the winter for the birds to keep themselves warm; on the other hand, when you are dealing with really old buildings the threat of fire is always there...and if I burned something down that would be the end of my chicken enterprise! JMHO.
So I have way too many eggs again and DD25 wont take them to the Activity Center with her today...she says the high schoolers wont take them home to their families anyhow.
I really dont understand it...DH agrees with her. What is wrong with people that they dont want free eggs? I guess I better try to list them on CL again...I always get flagged by the listing police...dont know why.
One last thing...Kristip--the other eggs didnt hatch? They might be a little slower because of her getting off of them for the chick...or did she stop sitting on the nest? I dont have any little chicks ATM...hopefully I will have some little turkeys in a week or so...if you still need something then you could have one (at least to grow it up) to keep yours company.
Looks wet and chilly out there today again...I am soooo tired of mud! I put my spikes on the "boots of death" so I can try and stay upright. Speaking of I tripped over the trailer tongue in the dark last night (going for the light switch) and now have a nice black bruise on my chin! Banged it right into the barn floor! OUCH! I kind of like the pointier chin look though!
It was nice the two days the mud was frozen...I hate to say we need it to be colder...but mud suck$!
Have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O
(PS) Go Pack...did I say that?
