Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hey y'all
Anybody else put Xmas lights in their chicken run?
I put up a rope light last weekend. We have a chain link dog kennel for our chicken run and DH wrapped the walls and roof with tarps to keep the girls dry and free of snow this winter. I have been worried about them getting enough light, they free range a few hours most days, but otherwise they are in the run.
I think the chickens are diggin the rope light cuz today I found the first egg in months.
Proof that chickens like disco lighting? I think so.
What do you think?

Hi all, fell asleep last night before I could post... guess I wasn't missed, that's OK only 1 day. Not going back to read everything from the night before so sorry...

We have our TV on a black lacquer dresser one of my kids picked off the side of the road!

MLH... Love the deco.! That Orloff looks like Penny... lost her this spring... she was a good hen. Glad to see "Super Glue" and Buzzy are doing good!

CC... Moose looks pretty "fluffy" glad he can squeeze through!

deb... no x-ass lights in the coop yet. Don't even have them in the house yet! Have to do a TO thing and rearrange some stuff before the tree can go up. Need help with that and wouldn't you know... DH threw out his back!

Good Morning Everyone! Well the ground is barely white here, fm must have been facing north when she danced.

Yes Peatwo has become his fathers son, he's a very good boy!

Jim you HAVE to keep telling the jokes just as a reminder to me. I have an oil filled heater that I'm thinking of putting in the coop this year. The square footage of the coop is right for the number of chickens but it just looks like there should be more chickens in there.

I see Meyers has B Australorp chicks

Really don't want chicks in the house all winter. Need to wait till spring. Whew think I talked myself out of them again..... for now....

whistle whistle. Going to call dad today to see how mom is and to give him a report on the funeral. Found out a few things I didn't know about my uncle. He was with Patten in Italy and was wounded 4 times. One time he was wounded and covered with bodies and the germans left him for dead. He was the only survivor out of 25. He also played the harmonica and piano. They rightfully buried him with full military honors. Man what a week. Was just thinking I need to make a cover for the louvered fan in the coop to keep in the heat a little better. Next week getting some straw and cleaning out the coop completely and start the deep liiter. Badgers going to the Rose Bowl again! And the Pack is gonna put another one in the win column!

Huh TO?

No snow here.... FM's aim was off.....

Dr.H sorry about your mom, Uncle..... now stay well yourself!

FT sorry about your Aunt

And I cannot remember who, but everyone else with relatives who have been injured or have become ill I wish for a speedy recovery.

TO, I usually have 6 pages of posts to try and get through whenever I have a moment to log on.

I hope we can get our Christmas tree today. I like it when they are not covered in snow......

Jim, love your jokes. The acceptance speech was a winner as well.

My typing skillz are terrible right now; I think I need coffee.

Later all!

DH declared this morning that he wants his own 'manly' chicken ........meaning a really big one.
Anyone know where I can get 1 Jersey Giant pullet?
He wants a chicken who can make the ground shake with its "BAWK"

Isn't he cute?
Considering he is 6 ft 5, I may end up with an Emu for the bird to be proportionate to him!!!

Oh yeah one more thing,
We live on the edge of Poynette & Arlington, and I admit I haven't looked into the chicken laws for our area.
I'm wondering if I'm an outlaw.
Anyone here from my area who might know?
I've looked in the chicken law section, but there is nothing listed.

See? Proof! Welcome to all the new typists!
Yes, we have been talking about winterizing our coops quite a bit on here...I am won of the few that does not believe in heating for chickens. I have my coops in two old sheds, One group actually can go into the whole shed, the other has a dog cage inside the shed for shelter that is small (hopefully soon to be expanded--just have to find the time and the urge!) The third bunch lives in a large pen in the barn. There is really no insulation to speak of in any of the structures. One is draft free. All the birds go outside during the day and free range except the ones in the barn. I dont really have any problems with them getting sick--there is "plenty" of ventilation! I have kept them this way for 22 years now at this place. Yes, I would love to have a state of the art coop...not happening here...I do provide extended light hours for them and they lay well. I tried Jim's 24/7 light idea in the barn and am now getting 11 eggs out of 12 hens per day! I am sure that I go through much more feed in the winter for the birds to keep themselves warm; on the other hand, when you are dealing with really old buildings the threat of fire is always there...and if I burned something down that would be the end of my chicken enterprise! JMHO.

So I have way too many eggs again and DD25 wont take them to the Activity Center with her today...she says the high schoolers wont take them home to their families anyhow.

I really dont understand it...DH agrees with her. What is wrong with people that they dont want free eggs? I guess I better try to list them on CL again...I always get flagged by the listing police...dont know why.

One last thing...Kristip--the other eggs didnt hatch? They might be a little slower because of her getting off of them for the chick...or did she stop sitting on the nest? I dont have any little chicks ATM...hopefully I will have some little turkeys in a week or so...if you still need something then you could have one (at least to grow it up) to keep yours company.

Looks wet and chilly out there today again...I am soooo tired of mud! I put my spikes on the "boots of death" so I can try and stay upright. Speaking of I tripped over the trailer tongue in the dark last night (going for the light switch) and now have a nice black bruise on my chin! Banged it right into the barn floor! OUCH! I kind of like the pointier chin look though!

It was nice the two days the mud was frozen...I hate to say we need it to be colder...but mud suck$!
Have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O
(PS) Go Pack...did I say that?

Hello all--I'm sorry I've had another absence, I've been dealing with a lot of personal stuff. Life seems to be kicking my a$$ a lot lately.

I'm here because I need help. My six-year-old daughter's cat has FeLV, Giardiasis, several intestinal parasites, and some other health problems that have not been properly diagnosed. He's miserable living here and I can't afford any vet care at all, nor can I afford to put him down. I'm still looking for work and my ex is still not paying child support. He would be a great barn cat - he has been happily living in and out of our back shed for the last year and a half because I live in a house my dad owns and he does NOT want cats in the house. The few times I've surreptitiously let him in the house during subzero temps at night he has had some serious issues with adapting to indoor life again, even though he sneaks into the house at every opportunity causing me to track him down and put him back out. BUT, he's very sick.

Anyway, the point is...is there anyone on the boards here who can help? I'm mostly looking for someone who can put him down? Does anyone know of free euthanasia services? I'm in the Milwaukee area. This is breaking my heart and my daughter's, but we've talked about the possibility that there's a little girl in heaven who had to leave her cat behind on earth when she went away, so maybe we can send her Lollipop for Christmas. This is the most horrible time of year to be having to do this, but it needs to be done. Please help.

Edited to add: Lolly is the grey cat on the top:

Unfortunately Kee if your one cat has FeLV then it is likely that your other one does too. The same with the parasites. Please do not rehome her to another place because then she will pass that nasty disease on to yet more cats. Why dont you just take her to the shelter and tell them her problems? They will put her down for you. You are doing the responsible thing and not taking her out and dumping her somewhere. You might have to make a small donation--maybe $5?
I dont know if you can drive to Madison but Shelter From the Storm might be able to help you. Do a search on petfinder and maybe someone on there can euthanize her or point you in the right direction. I wish you luck and lots of hugs...it is never easy when you have a suffering pet (and kids to explain it to also!) Been there--done that!
