Kris-I like to feed scratch. Honestly, though, I've always fed scratch since there is more of a variety to it. Interestingly, my hens don't like cracked corn but love scratch. Plus, Buzzy goes crazy over scratch! It's like candy to pheasants, so she only gets a little bit here and there are a treat. Maybe would explain why she is so fat! LOL!
The "formal" answer from dh the poultry feed dude: "six of one half, dozen of the other. They are both the same protein, about 10-12%. Thought scratch will have more of a variety."
I say if scratch is on sale-go for the one sale stuff!!....I need to go to F&F now!!

Have to share a funny xmas story...

Background: I have 15 chickens-3-4 roos, and 11-12 hens (one still undetermined) of which only 2 are laying age. The two laying age hens-sopped laying on Thanksgiving. These are bonafide pets-names, handled etc. and hopefully a few eggs out of the deal.

My brother for Christmas thinks hes pretty funny..Xmas presents for me? Shake n Bake, Chicken helper and a full CASE of new egg cartons (125)...saying that should last me the next 20 yrs.

Now Im just anxious to get some grow lights, and a light rope up and get these girls back to work (My other 9-10 hens are almost 5 months)

(Also rcvd egg wash, egg basket, chicken book, and new coop boots from variety of family members)

Angie-I am so very jealous! You got egg wash and coop boots! I got boots too but they are way to nice to wear in the coop! If I have them on, I take them off before I got into the coop! LOL!

Good thing he got you 125 cartons! It might last you till next Christmas and he'll need to get you more!

I prefer whole corn to mix with boss and cat food for scratch....higher protein and still have variety. Works here anyway. One can buy over 100 lbs of whole corn for what 50lbs of scratch costs... just a thought....chickens here love whole corn.

Don't know who the Pack will be playing yet in the playoffs. Has to be one of the winners in the NFC from the wild card game. In the big game, if we make it that far, we need to step up play in the D or go home losers. In my opinion.

Evening! Just got back from the movie...had to catch up on reading! War Horse was OK...funny how everyone in the crowd turns into a horse trainer though....I will have to say that the woman next to me was crying when he was born and then when he left his Mother and again when...you get the picture! I did not think it was as much of a tear-jerker as the previews made it out to be...DD25 said it was "happy crying." (I didnt shed a tear, neither did dd19) The war scenes were horrendous though! It probably was just like that too. Sending those poor kids over the walls just to be shot down...praying that none of my family ever has to fight like that (or at all!) I cant believe what movies cost now though! DD25 had a pass so that as good. I bought the popcorn and soda: $15! Sheesh!

We (here in the South) should definitely go in on a case of Oxine! $19/gal isnt bad...I saw it for $25 when I looked. ANybody want to go in? What about your DH MLH? Could he get it or would the company get it and stock it or something? I dont know how fast you go through it but I hear it is fabulous for keeping algae out of tanks and waterers and killing bad stuff/surfaces or airborne.

I too feed whole corn but mostly for the geese and ducks. I get rolled corn and mix it with whole oats and BOSS and some cat food for their scratch. THey like it...there is never any left on the ground that is for sure! They also like to eat the stuff the pigeons leave. I dump their dishes on the cement floor with a little cat food and they all come running. The blue Ams get Boss, safflower and peanut mix when I feed the wild birds. They follow me all over the yard until they get "their" food! What deos F&F scratch have in it anyhow? All I noticed is that it was pretty pricey!

Guess I ought to go and work on my egg code document...never know, those eggs I gave DrH might be pipping tomorrow with all of his watching!

Hello folks. Would I have responded sooner but I've been extremely drained with making soap. I appreciate everyone's input on run construction. Didn't know deer fencing was so easy to tear. I figured my coop would be attached to my mini barn making it impossible for any critter to get into their coop area. The run will eventually be built like a fort. Buried wire, but not chicken wire as someone had said, coons rip through it easily. Redbrand fencing has been in my sights for awhile now. The deer and orchard fence is spaced with 1inch squares at the bottom to 4 inch squares at the top making for a nearly impossible entry. Of course I know nothing can work 110% of the time, at least for in the woods area, I wont have to worry about checking on the poultry every hour. I plan to double fence the perimeter and though its more work, I don't mind as I work with the Amish farming and harvesting and know all about hard work
