Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

TO, thanks for posting that tidbit about optimal temp. being 80*. I didn't know that, but I did know that whenever my girls were not feeling right, they loved being warm. Keeping them warm, calm and under the least amount of stress is always best.
If you can keep your roo in his normal surroundings, Ang, that should be good, but I'd have him be alone in the cage/kennel so he can heal, rest & not be disturbed/stressed.

Jim, I'm glad to hear you're sticking with Nora. I wonder if that guy wanted to breed her? And very good advice on the sick roo, as always.

Wow, that's a good looking boy you've got there, FT. One of my aussies flies up to roost on a 6' tall fence inside the carport every night. Evidently she's too good for the coop.
roll.png
Nice pics, esp. the one of Porky.

I hope our D gives Eli a run for his money too Bigz. All over the field, and into it too.

Not much else to say, so I'll say sweet dreams, all! I'm pooped.

Hi ALL,

Tomski... I love sauerkraut !!! (Had Rubens for supper ) And have made my own too! I would have a batch going now if it weren't for the garden fence blowing down and greedy chickens!
barnie.gif
I however I'm German and like it nice and strong. I even put caraway in it (helps cut the gas too). Never rinse it! I even add extra "juice" when I can. If you do like it on the sweet side, try adding apples. I never tried freezing it. I have canned it. But yes, fresh is BEST!

FT... I'm sure little Sissy would like a friend! You might not have gotten a good look at her when you were here. She's my little Bantam Turken. Was that a Bachelor Pad in your Pic.?

MLH... Jasmine is still broody too... I just pick her up and take the eggs. Then tell her she can hatch all she wants in the spring! T'sai... yep, didn't have to explain that one to me either!
wink.png
How's she doing now? All cleared up I hope.

Angie.... hope your roo is OK...if I would have seen this sooner I would have said trying using "Super Glue". I had to glue a finger today because it wouldn't stop bleeding.

Freshened up the coop today and fixed a fence. Not so easy with 1 hand.
roll.png
Got it done though! Hard to try to figure out HOW to do stuff in a way that I don't stress the hand! Don't want to mess it up now. After my last boo-boo I think I have to keep it splinted and braced a week longer than planned.
hmm.png
Wouldn't be so bad if it were the other hand.
I'm worried about the kitten, she slipped out when I let the dogs out. D@mn owl!

Well, time to stoke the fire (I think it's fine in here but DH will be cold when he gets up) Make the mash then bed!
Night all!

Good Morning Everyone! 5 pages whew! Angie hope your roo recovers!
fl.gif
Didn't read about the shutdown tomorrow either. Better plan on reading all day Weds.
lol.png
Tomski thanks for the recipe. I should get in touch with my ex BIL and get his too. His is supposed to be the bestest. See Bigz it is a word.
lol.png
Noticed how much time Tebow was afforded in the pocket. All day! But think the Ain'ts will end their season. Think the Giants are going test the Packs O and D. Jim yup you gotta replentish those precious bodily fluids!
lau.gif
FT loved the Porky pic and the roo too. But why would you want a chicken run attached to your beautiful outhouse?
gig.gif
And if I stayed up later around the fire I'd still be up at daylight at the latest.
somad.gif
Thinking of starting to paint the bedroom today.

it's early. For some.

So much more

Good Morning!

Wow - a bunch of "chatty Kathys" last night eh? LOL

Ang - good luck with the rooster! Lots of good advice!

Cloudy with no Sun.... Again
sad.png
I thought I was done with wood for the year but I'm gonna take advantage of this weather and go grab a couple of loads of maple. I felled and limbed two nice sized trees this spring - I also cut them up into about 12 foot sections. So it should be a cake walk getting them cut up, split and stacked. I bought one of those little 4' X 4' dump (manual) trailers at a yard sale this fall - It's rated for 600lbs. I thought it would be perfect to pull behind the ATV or lawn tractor. I think rather than drag the logs out of the woods to the wood pile and make firewood - I'm gonna cut and split on site, load up the little trailer and haul to the wood pile.... Oh well, we'll see how it goes.

FT - That Rooster looks like Bert's twin!
big_smile.png
Handsome feller! Both the Barred Rocks laid eggs yesterday. Nothing from the Buffs yet. The four new hens still haven't integrated into the flock. Bert is having a ball checking up and taking care of TWO harems... LOL He has been really good about crowing. The only time he starts crowing is when something/someone comes around the coop/run area. Then he goes crazy. So far he seems like he's gonna be a good "Watchroo."

DrHa - I'd like a copy of your recipe (when you get it)...

Cind - I've read about the apples making it sweeter but also making the kraut more bitter at the same time due to the sugar in the apple fermenting the brew faster. I'm like Jim, when using a can of kraut, I rinse it first. I've read about the caraway seeds reducing gas as well as "smoothing" the kraut out... I may add a few to the next batch. I'll have to check on the amounts and when to add.

BBP - What does "dubbing breeds" mean? And why would it cause bleeding? (I'm pretty new to the whole chicken thing)

Laters...

Morning! I am missing my blue sky this morning! It was so nice and sunny the past few days...I get spoiled so very quickly...
Tom--Dubbing is when they trim off the combs, wattles and "ears" of a chicken. It is what the Standard calls for in the gamebird breeds. It does totally change their look when done (I think for the better) but I would never do it to a bird! I think I read when they do it they just dust the combs with stipic powder and let em go....ick!

So how is your roo this morning Angie? I hope feeling well and crowing up a storm.
Frenchie--what kind of roo is that that flew on top the pen? AmeracaunaX?
The weatherman just said high over 50 tomorrow! I might not be taking down the Christmas tree after all! By Thursday we are supposed to be "more seasonal" with snow expected. Maybe I will get that plastic up on the porch tomorrow if it's not too windy! I hate when it snows and it gets all in the porch (and my boots!)

My Aunt brought me all her GF flours and a cookbook "The Gluten Free Bible" I guess she decided that she didnt have a problem with gluten after all...HMMM. That, or it was just too "hard." My split pea soup really hit the spot last night! I might just go and have another bowl for breakfast! I love sauerkraut too! I dont rinse mine either...dump the can and juice right into the pot. I usually have to use two cans cause it cooks down so much. We tried to make it once but I think it was too warm in the kitchen for it...it smelled REALLY bad and ended up molding I think...it was DH's project. Hey, when my Dad was here I gave him some of my homade horseradish and some pickled eggs. He liked both. He probably would have liked some veniso sausage too but I am a bit stingy with that!
hide.gif

If it wasnt so warm outside it syre looks like it would snow! The sky has that heavy gray look to it...

Nice pics Frenchie! I love the pig! My friend (that I told about those other pigs) did end up getting one! She is just a baby...born in October. I cant wait to go and see her! Hey, maybe you can bring Porks to the next Southern bash...she lives right by that park...and you guys could make some babies!
ya.gif
Nothing cuter than PBP babies!

The soup is calling...have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O

(PS) Jim--dont let anyone take Nora!

Morning All!
BYC is down on Tuesday! Uh No! Good to know! Guess I can find something to do....

So happy that Denver won! Not a Steelers fan here and that over time win for Denver was awesome! Where were the Steelers in over time? All I can think of was they they were getting ahead of themselves thinking about what they would do once they got the ball, but they forget the had to get it first!!
DH keeps quoting "The road to the the Super Bowl goes through Lambeau".

T'sai is all better and what ever she had/did passed or fixed itself. She is back to her normal bossy princess behavior. The Snot.

Ang-Hope your rooster is doing better! Those comb injuries always look worse them the really are. He was probably more in shock from the altercation then the actual blood loss Poor Dear.

BBP- I showed a few of the breeds that the roosters had to be dubbed for show as per the SOP guidelines. Pretty much all Game Fowl types have to be. It gets even trickier in the Modern Games because from what my mentor told me, they have to be dubbed a specific way. He showed the Moderns for over 40 years and he was really good at dubbing. We also would dub when a rooster a "comb" issue where the comb grew out funny and fell over one of his eyes. I had a Frizzle roo that we had to do that to because his comb was actually hitting his eye. He was much happier without his comb!
Yes they do bleed a lot but I got a tip from my friend in Siapan as to how to help stop the bleeding. Pluck a few fine downy feathers from their vent area and stick them on the dub site. Works like a charm. The feathers eventually fall off.

Tom- yep, dubbing is the practice of shearing off the roosters comb and waddles and earlobes. There are specialized shears made for this task or you can use a sharp pair of kitchen shears. I agree with TO. I love the look of a dubbed rooster.

FT-cute piggy! He is much bigger then I thought! He sure has a cute face!
If I could have a horse at my house, I'd sleep in the barn! LOL!!
I know that Ideal, Welp and Privett all vent sex. Jim is right that some breeds can be father sexed. All breeds can be vent sexed but the Bantams are too small to accurately sex so hatcheries sell them as straight run. Even vent sexing is not 100% (although I think in reality it is) the hatcheries sex the chicks so fast that they do make honest mistakes so to cover the hatcheries butt, they give an accuracy of 98% or so. in our experience, having dealt with so many hatcheries over the years, I have to say that the 98% is about right. Once we started to order rarer breeds the percentage of males in the mix got a smidge higher. The production breeds rarely had any roosters in the mix. We always had rooster buyers so getting rid of the cockerels was never a problem for us.

TO-Good score on your GF cook books!

Cind-Super Glue has decided to only brood at certain times.
roll.png
She must not be serious about it yet! If I'm passing out goodies, she is right there getting her share. Then she runs out into the coop to pester all the other hens to get their treats. Plus she is not as mean and crankie as she should be. I think she will get more serious closer to spring. She is not completely mature yet, so by spring she will be. When she finally does brood, I will stick eggs under her since she will be a fantastic mamma.

Well, I'd best be off! Need to clean out the brooder. Have a terrific day and if I can't make it back, I'll chat at you on Wednesday.

Nope, won't let me change my av. Too long with the same one, must have burned into the BYC site. Maybe I'll try after the relaunch tomorrow...

That's what I used to use with my parrots "Quik Stop" but was unable to find it here. So bought a product called I think "Bleed Stop"-it doesn't work! Cornstarch seemed to work a lot better. I was covered head to foot with it and spats of blood face, hair, boot,s pants, coat-you name it.

Hansel seemed ok this morning-although really not happy to be caged up. Scrambled an egg for him...that shushed him up for a few. I was really torn before leaving for work-leaving him in the cage to heal and protect fromt he others, vrs. letting him out so there isnt an issue with seperating the boys for a day. Decided to leave him in this kennel for the day-its wire and open so they are still kinda together. I also took the advice to put hot water into water bottles (Didn't have any gallon jugs) That was great advice and easy to do. I think he must have laid on it as it was somewhat warm this morning. When I posted last night it was 28, this morning it was 34 so thats good as well.
