Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

ok so I know I am starting to obsess on this... calling my silkie expert FT and anyone else who is very familiar with them. ok so comb is not huge... hard to get a pic of it... wattles are red and not real big. Bird is much larger than hatch mate. Has what I think are streamers and if silkies have hackle feathers, this has some. It is the comb throwing me off from thinking it is a hen. And I heard a bwak from it yesterday I think. Here are pics from last night... yes I am obsessed.
Love the baby pics aply... will need closer ones to look at breeds! Cuties!!!

You're right, I think it is a male. The comb is on the small side, how old is this little guy.
First thing I noticed is the swept back crest. Most of my roos have that swept back look. Those look like streamers and hackles to me too.
Hopefully Tiki244 will be on today. I'm sure she'll agree with me that it's a boy. Maybe he could be a house chicken if you cant have hens outside !! LOL

Got my first order of chicks this morning. The post office called at 7:45am :) Sadly 1 was DOA so I have 15 chicks chirping away. I thought I ordered 18 chicks but after looking at my order again I guess I only ordered 16, I forgot to double up a couple. So far I've only ID'd the Easter Egger and I think the white cochin I think. It should have been the only feather legged chick but I have 3 so I may be wrong. Ok so here is what I ordered.

1 Ancona
1 White cochin
2 Golden lakenvelders
1 silver lakenvelder
1 barred rock
1 Easter Egger
1 blue Andalusian
8 fry pan specials

And here are the pics ---- Any idea who is who lol

Oh and dogs cant stop staring lol

I think the Ancona is the one in the center of the top pic, facing away from the camera. They are black and yellow as chicks. Congrats on the babies!

unkadan, I know Bill and Jackie, I think Scott and Don were just coming on as I was leaving. Worked with Bill on the OE building, learned a lot from him.

An FYI to the raw milk drinkers, the state is trying to shut down and jail an Amish farmer, Vernon Hershberger, in Baraboo for selling raw milk off his farm to a private buying club. There is a rally to support him on Friday at 11am at the Baraboo courthouse; I'd love to go but will have family visiting. Anyone able to go is encouraged to attend, to send the state a message to back off the small farmers.

Raw Milk Freedom Riders

Food Freedom Rally in Support of Vernon
Please also join us the following day, Friday, March 2nd, (11:00-1:00) for a FOOD FREEDOM RALLY in support of Wisconsin dairy farmer, Vernon Hershberger who faces criminal charges, and possible imprisonment, for providing raw dairy to his community via a private herd-share agreement. Vernon courageously stands for food freedom and sets a new standard for farmer’s response to these egregious government violations.

I am considering going to that rally, but it's a 4 hour one way drive for me, which is a long drive. But I really hope that everyone closer who can, goes- it doesn't matter if you drink raw milk or not or how you feel about it- this is about food freedom. There is no justifiable reason for the government to regulate raw milk at all, let alone a farmer simply distributing product to the co-owners of the animals- it's ridiculous!

On another note, does anyone in Western WI have a small incubator they aren't using (near Hastings, MN)? My daughter's class wants to hatch chicks, but the teacher has to locate an incubator herself. I should probably just buy one and let her use it- I'll probably buy one eventually- but I hadn't planned to this spring.

Hope everyone's staying warm! (and dry... it's a slushy mess here!)

Oh sure Terri, you call & tell me how windy it is out by you & what happens? Not a half hour later, it was sounding like a hurricane outside. We had some beautiful sunshine here too, but it got replaced by more gray clouds again.

Oh, if you'd check you e-mails a little more frequently, you might remember why people are sending you their number, hmmm???

Yeah right. I posted a link for Bigz to check out, then later in the day posted a link to some chicks. When Bigz told me the link didn't work, I thought he meant the chick one & resent it to him. Only hours later did it dawn on me it was the first one he wanted, the one that I specifically posted just for him. Talk about "Duh"!

Cind, I've heard between 55-60* with a higher humidity for storing hatching eggs.

Glad you got home safe, Jim. Not exactly the best travelling weather, hey? I hate driving in that stuff.

Drh, waaaayyy too much info on the show down in Mex. I won't even ask how you knew about them.

Apyl, you have a Marchorio cage for a brooder, hey? I really like those cages. Wish I had another one or two. Alot of the other brands don't have the top that opens, or if they do, they're really small. Love your chick pics!

The active cultures in yogurt are probiotics. Some pill/capsule forms of probiotics have more different kinds of "good bacteria" than yogurt, but they really aren't necessary. Either yogurt or a probiotic will both do the same thing.
MLH, congrats on the kits! And according to you, I only have 4 chickens? Well, maybe I'd better load up my incubator!

You too, Terri. We've got some chicken math to catch up on!

Well, better get moving again. Too much to do around here. BBL!

I had 2 but the other has a crack in the bottom. I think I paid $5 for this one at a garage sale a couple years ago. DD use to have guinea pigs so these were their cages, now no more guinea pigs so I scrubbed this one up and figured I could use it at first.

Gahh! I just looked out the window and it's SNOWING here!

We haven't moved into the new house yet - there ended up being some problems with the plumbing and ductwork that, while it doesn't make the house un-livable, we decided to have re-done the right way before we move in. They're going to re-insulate the attic for us and put new countertops in the kitchen while they're at it. So, we're looking at the weekend of March 17th for a move-in date!

In the meantime, ALL the birds have started laying and I'm fighting massive urges to fire up one of the little Brinsea Octagon 20's and do a fertility test. My Mille Fleur Cochin trio have been laying an egg a day and I'm DYING to hatch a few!!! But I don't want to set up the incubator at the new house and risk the workers bumping into it or shutting off the power of something while they're working, and at this point, they wouldn't hatch before we move and I don't want to have to shut the incubator off and try to physically transport it a half-hour drive in the car with developing chickies in it!

So, I'm back to living vicariously through BYC at the moment...

Hooray! I got a call from the post office this morning. I got my next batch of hatching eggs, which will all be sold as chicks. I got 7 Lavender Orpingtons. 8 Wheaten Marans, and 12 Black Copper Marans. I will of course post what I hatch and you all get first dibs before Craig's listers.

Time to go clean out those bators again!

Back from my town run...lady didnt show up for the duck eggs...but now I got an email that she was waiting in the play area...sheesh--who picks up eggs in the play area? I was in the parking lot with the eggs sitting on top my car...LM is a bad area for cell phones so she couldnt call me!

Oh well, maybe we will try next week. I stopped at my neighbor's place to see if I could buy some hay...it was pouring rain by then, and he was dehorning cattle. All I can say is YUK! He is the typical "old style farmer" and I certainly do not agree with many of his methods to say the least! I wont say anymore!~

So I picked up the stuff to make the banana split torte from work...hopefully I got everything. I think I still need some cool whip and vanilla pudding though--gotta check the recipe. I used to love that desert! I called my Mom (who I got it from) to find out if It needed to chill a while before serving and she didnt even remember ever making it! So now she wants me to send her the recipe...talk about

I guess I now know where I get it from!

Man im really really sorry about all this. My phone is weird and I couldn't view my emails in m...

So I replied that I was the one that told her that the whipped cream was the best part and that I ought to learn to listen to the little voices that talk to me! I think I should become a psychic...I would probably make more money that by selling duck eggs! LOL!

Later--Terri O
