Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I had a silver spangled hamburg once. They do not grow that big. They are kinda like silver sebrights really. You have nothing to worry about!

That does make me feel a little better, I'm just a little worried because of course it is my daughters first chicken! I am also comparing it to Barred Rocks...

Yeah, and plus she's only a week old, wait a little while and she'll grow. But if she has any signs of sickness, you'll need help. Barred Rocks are much bigger than the SSH, so I don't know if you really want to compare them.

"it's a Blustery Day"

this will be at least a 2 plow deal for me, 10" here under the big pines already,,,roads have to be really drifted with the wind,,,,just talked my DD into calling work telling them she will be running late she drives 25 miles to Woodruff and I know she'll regret it if she attempts it this early.

I did a dumb$ss
barnie.gif
when laying in supplies,,got gas for the tractor and the generator,,got milk, bread, cigs,,,,,,,but I forgot propane for the greenhouse heater,,,grrrrr I'll test the roads myself in an hour or so hopefully #45 will have been plowed,,,,never know, the "budget cuts" have really slowed that process so far on such a mild winter

FT,,,,funny chit T & A

and the owner is younger than I am,,,,,ahemmm

Amy,,,,HRC ppl I deal with are Bill L, Don K, Scott E, Jackie R,, pretty sure all were there when you were

I get my feed recently from a new store on 70W across from the go cart/horse place(funny how those 2 go together in the tourist area), get a 10% farm discount and will deliver pallet loads for free,,,,puts the price on layer at $21/100#,,,I had been buying from the co-op in Bruces Crossing or the Aniwa mill both are great but are also an hour drive from here
Just looked at my receipt and my cost for layer mix is $18.84/100# but they don't deliver this far.I've tried the mash at Aniwa mill but I think I wasted alot of it.
My Mill doesn't grind mine as much, I like a coarser mix. And instead of alfalfa meal he uses alfalfa crumbles so they have small pieces to eat. They he adds showmaster sheen which is like Mana pro pellets which get rolled into small pieces. Very happy with my mill. He'll do whatever I want, he should, I buy enough !!! LOL
Looks like by days end we could have 20" or more of the white stuff. Gosh were we spoiled this year.

Got my first order of chicks this morning. The post office called at 7:45am :) Sadly 1 was DOA so I have 15 chicks chirping away. I thought I ordered 18 chicks but after looking at my order again I guess I only ordered 16, I forgot to double up a couple. So far I've only ID'd the Easter Egger and I think the white cochin I think. It should have been the only feather legged chick but I have 3 so I may be wrong. Ok so here is what I ordered.

1 Ancona
1 White cochin
2 Golden lakenvelders
1 silver lakenvelder
1 barred rock
1 Easter Egger
1 blue Andalusian
8 fry pan specials

And here are the pics ---- Any idea who is who lol

Oh and dogs cant stop staring lol

Good Morning.
So how does the little ones poop look? It could have cocci even if there is no blood in the poop. Even if you are feeding medicated food they can get cocci.
In that case use Sulmet or Corrid. Corrid is easier on their system and Sulmet can damage either their kidneys or liver (can't remember which). at higher dosages. Should be ok for short term use though.
If you have any yogurt with live cultures you could feed that. Add some probiotics if you have that. I don't know what you are using for light/heat but if you are using just a regular light bulb you might increase the wattage or move it closer if it is chilled.

That's about all i can suggest. Alot of people buy liquid childrens vitamins. Poly Vi Sol (the one WithOut Iron) and give it a tiny drop. That won't do anything for cocci though.

Good Luck with the little one. Keep us posted.

PS It might like some scrambled eggs. They are high in protien and alot of good vitamins.
Thank you for the information...

I do not have any sulmet or corrid, but will pick some up this weekend to have it on hand...I thought it was mentioned that you should not treat for Cocci with one of these and still feed medicated feed (maybe MLH or her husband mentioned that lastnight)

I have a GQF grower and everyone looks good in there at the temp, ie.. no crowding and nobody out away from heat source, but will turn up the heat a little

I was going to actually feed a little scrambled egg tonight, and or some plain yogurt, never thought about adding probiotics to it though! Am I right that I should not do both at the same time, but space it out a couple of days

Poop does look fine at this point, little we maybe, but it all lands on a metal sheet and I did take a little look last night...but will give it all a further examination tonight when I clean the tray!

Thanks,

Joe

ok so I know I am starting to obsess on this... calling my silkie expert FT and anyone else who is very familiar with them. ok so comb is not huge... hard to get a pic of it... wattles are red and not real big. Bird is much larger than hatch mate. Has what I think are streamers and if silkies have hackle feathers, this has some. It is the comb throwing me off from thinking it is a hen. And I heard a bwak from it yesterday I think. Here are pics from last night... yes I am obsessed.
Love the baby pics aply... will need closer ones to look at breeds! Cuties!!!

Morning All!
So I got the chance to meet NJ at the Mazo seminar last night and he is one cool guy! It was nice to put a face to the name!
The talk went really well, We had about 35 ish people show up and one lady drove an hour to come to it. It was a good turn out and we had some great questions asked and we had a mix of newbies, old timers and a couple o groups of 4-H kids! We had an super nice lady whi showed Ornamentals and one nice man who was a meat chicken guy. It was fun to have a large mixture of interests!
All the little chicks were bought be one guy so they all still have their friends!
I took Midge, Minnie and two of the Gold Stars so people could see an adult chicken and what the Gold Stars will look like all growen (sp) up. The Girls did really good. Nice an quite during the talk!

Ben and Crew are getting over loosing their friends! They are crashed! I guess having 25 little girls over for a slumber party does that to a baby chick! LOL!

Other then that Guess What!!!! Cali had her kits yesterday!!! I have determined that I count the days wrong from the date I breed to the date they kindle. According to my count she is due today but kindled yesterday. Maggie did the same thing. Anyway, Cali sadly had a big mess of about 6 or 7 dead. I cleaned out the nest box to get rid of bodies and as I was doing that the fur mound in the back of the box moved! Holy Crow! I was like oh she kept some (thinking maybe two or three possible a few more). Well she kept get this...10!!! Yep 10!! So she had a little of about 16/17 kits. I told DH and he was surprised the litter was that big. She only has so many teets so I guess she kept the most healthy of the lot. Almost all are pink but I have one solid black like daddy and one broken black. That will be one pretty rabbit. So anyway, Cali is being a good mommy and she let me clean out the mess in her nest and put new shaving in the front of the box. When I left to go get her a carrot she was busy pulling hair to add to replace the soiled hair I took out. Such a good mama.
Next week is Lucy's turn. That is not going to go well.....
I'll take some pics of the newbies and post them soon.

NJ- It was great meeting you last night! I'm glad you came to the seminar!
You SSH sounds like she is just being a little chick. You can but sugar in her water it wont hurt.
Quail don't count in Chicken Math. They count in gamebird math. Luckily chicken math and gamebird math don't coincide.
Bantams on the other hand do count in chicken math but only if they are laying, and they count as 1/2 a chicken. So if you have 2 laying bantams, you have 1 chicken. If you have really small bantam breeds like the Dutch and Japanese Serama those are the 3:1 ratio for laying hens only. As previously stated, roosters and chicks don't count.
Unfortunately, gamebirds are in deed counted per piece because you can sell them either as chicks, roosters, or hens since they are normally used for either food or upland bird activities.

Welcome to all the new poeple!

TO-Cute cute cute little Roo!! His comb cracks me up! Your such a nice person to give him a home!!!

Hooray! I got a call from the post office this morning. I got my next batch of hatching eggs, which will all be sold as chicks. I got 7 Lavender Orpingtons. 8 Wheaten Marans, and 12 Black Copper Marans. I will of course post what I hatch and you all get first dibs before Craig's listers.

Time to go clean out those bators again!

MLH: Thanks for explaining the chicken math LOL That means I only have 9 chickens!! And with the new batch/chicken math, I will only be adding 7 more leaving me with only 16 chickens? Im thinking I need more!!!! (Actually bodies would equal 22)

Good morning! It is very nice outside for raining most of the night! Cant wait to get out in the MUD. THe sun is shining and the sky is blue! Earlier it was very dark and gray to the North...but this big wind seems to have blown all that away. It is a rare day that it is windy down here under the hill--today it is. I just want it to dry out some of the soil...DD says that the 7 day forecast calls for 56 degrees next week!!! Now I dont like to hear that far in advance because it never seems to come true!
THanks for the comments on my new roo...it is a bantam partridge cochin I am pretty sure; and no, his head matches his body...my camera seems to do that--it makes my nose look big too...oh, wait.

So funny thing this morning....I had to take care of a few emails that were bothering me. One was the Kohl's bill (got the late fee waived) and the other email had a home number and a cell number--nothing else...who in the he!! would send an email like that? Soooo, I call it and it's......ROBIN AKA CC!
lau.gif
I had sent her a message saying that the number I had for her hooked me up with a resturant...so she sent me her right ones. DUH, like I would remember that?! So we had a nice talk and now I have the right number to get a hold of her when I see some good chicken deals...like that BA roo I bought at the swap...his name is Ron BTW....

Then I see this:
Quail don't count in Chicken Math. They count in gamebird math. Luckily chicken math and gamebird math don't coincide.
Bantams on the other hand do count in chicken math but only if they are laying, and they count as 1/2 a chicken. So if you have 2 laying bantams, you have 1 chicken. Finally someone has correctly defined chicken math!!! THANK YOU MLH!!!! Actually I am going to print this out and post it on my refrigerator so the fam can read it and stop hassling me about getting new birdies! Sheesh--you would think I have 10,000 the way they talk...the definitions says right here that roos dont count--SO THERE!

So the birds I get from the CHicago area...several roos, some quail, a pigeon and a tortoise (of all things) come from a woman that does the city chicken thing there and is connected to a rescue that is owned by (get this) DD26s work friend's mom's best friend. I think I got that right...now I would nt have to have told you all this if FT didnt ask...and we all know that what FT wants SHE GETS!
