Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Set 34 barnyard mix eggs in the Hovabator on Tuesday at school so we are hoping to hatch out a mess of eggs in three weeks. My little bantam cochin Reese PB Cup is doing a great job on her 8 eggs. Going to candle again on Friday Night to see what is viable.

So excited to get some quail from FT, I may have to set up some winter pens for them and keep them around all the time.

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the time to hatch some chicks.

KEN

Quail??? I would like to get some quail someday, now that MLH has put a bug in my ear that has been itching for sometime! Anyway my question that you or someone on here may be able to answer is: Do I need a Wild Game farm license to possess, propagate, purchase or sell Bobwhite Quail?

Thanks,

Joe

thank you CC, I am very happy for the little guy/girl to perk up a little. Not sure how the DD would take her very first chickie (Little Giant Angelica) passing b4 her time!

I will have to get some pics tonight and post on now what seems to be a braggin board for chicks!

Chicks man! thank you to the Soup and Joel McHale for keeping that line ingrained in my head!

Hi again--back from work and the store...I needed a few more things to make the dessert for the Pines tomorrow. My cats ate the graham crackers I brought home so I had to get more...and I forgot the powdered sugar and cool whip! So the strawberries are thawing and I will get to it...soon! I am making eggs benedict for supper tonight. I bought reg English muffins for the people but I have to make some GF ones for me! I was just going to use tortillas but the recipe I have sounds good so I will try it. I am always amazed at how easy it is to make GF breads...I woonder why they cost so much in the store? I will try to take a pic of them when I have them done.
Speaking of pics...Bigfam all I can say is you have SO MANY possibilities! One thing I was thinking is to frame in that roof that the cows used to eat under. THat could make a good coop. THen you have that nice cement to fence in for a run. Easy to keep clean, mudfree and snow free too. Just make sure you make the gate wide enough for equipment! THe milk house looks fine for a little coop...I can see all kinds of animals in your future! You are lucky that your barn looks pretty good! I put over $3000 in mine last year and it still looks like crap! I wish I had the vertical siding like yours...it is much more durable! At least mine is out of the danger of falling down for now. I really want to put tin on it but $$$!
I tossed the pigeon eggs that they had been sitting on--they werent fertile it seems. Too early yet I guess.
I am trying to decide what I want to hatch for the foolish hatch. I am leaning towards guineas...I know I can get rid of them. THe new Aussie roo is doing his job...the hens all look to have muddy backs! Too bad I am only getting 3 eggs from the 6 of them!

Well, dogs want to go out and be fed and that dessert isnt going to make itself either...sure wish my IB would kick in! Between my head, neck and knees I dont know what hurts worse! At least my skin has settled down...I had "flu skin" all night where even your PJs hurt it...I need a nap!
Later! Terri O

(PS) KEN--did the quail arrive yet?

Terri O: What type of flours do you use when making GF bread? I prefer the flavors of rice and potatoe flours...but can't seem to make a very good bread or dinner rolls with them? (Don't care for soy/sorghum flours) The texture is always off. We end up buying Udi's bread at 5.50 a loaf (half the size of regular loaves of bread). I would love to get some recipes from you if you care to share?

Bf4: nice pics and what a fun place!!! Can't wait to hear how you plan on setting up all the chicks!!!

Would anyone else be interested in adopting any of the hens in CA that were left to starve for 2 weeks? I donated, and rcvd a wonderful email back from the organization that is rescuing these hens. I asked if they were doing out of state adoptions and she said they were jsut discussing this as there have been a few inquiries. and she was asking for suggestions on the best way to transport? (One potential adoption home is in NC) She is asking how many she could safely transport in a cargo van as they dont want to pull a stock trailer. Anyone have any suggestions/input? And anyone else interested in adopting some of these?

My mom would probably take some (5-10). I have a friend who would probably take a few. I wouldn't mind a couple. Keep me posted.

BBP: Thanks for replying ;-) and I will keep you posted. They have a video showing a hen seeing the sun and grass for the first time-yes I was tearing up!

So does anyone now how many chickens could safely be transported cross country in a cargo van? And the best way to do this?

What is a cargo van? There is a post on here where someone from Washington moved and used a Uhaul. They had an elabarate fan and air system in the back of the UHaul. I can try and find it. That is so sad.I have to read everything I just got on here. I take it you are getting some? Good for you.

I have to go to the library to see te videos but I went to the website last night.

Thank God some where saved and will be able to enjoy a chicken life.

O I am reading backwards. I would love 3-4 for sure just to be able to see them be able to enjoy life. Poor things. I was filling adoption form and then my computer siezed up last night.

Since Bf4 has so many beautiful empty outbuildings just begging to be filled, I bet she'd be able to provide a loving home for, oh, a truckload?

Hi all!

I'm going to comment first before I forget!

BigZ-Thanks for the seeds!!!

H&R-I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I'm glad the doctors can help her. McNugget sounds like he is having fun being the top rooster! SG is still on the nest! So far so good after the first day of nest drama. The other hens have finally left her alone so we have that all sorted out! I guess she finally she remembered she is an Aseel so she kicked booty accordingly.
If they hatch according to grand scheme and design, they should hopefully hatch in St. Patricks Day!

Bf4-you have a beautiful home! I'm very jelous! You have way more restraint then me! I'd have that place filled with all sorts of animals!!

Ang-there are a few ways to transport those hens. With the cost of gas, the cost however will be huge to drive those hens across country. They can always mail them. There are special boxes specifically designed for adult birds to be shipped through the PO system. I've sent birds all over the states and to Siapan this way and have not had any problems. Mailing them would be cheaper.
If they want to drive then in a cargo van, then I'd recommend that they use some form of those plastic kennels like the ones for dogs and cats. A horse or stock trailer would work well too, again putting the birds in the kennels. Depending on how much they are and if the rescue can find some, there are wooden chicken cages/crates that people who show chicks use. They kind of look like wooden crates. As far as how many could go in a cargo van would depend on what they want to put the hens in container wise. I would think that they could get atleast 25 or 30 if not closer to 50. Again it depends on what they use to contain them and how they pack the cages/crates.
I hauled my show chickens in dog crates and kennels in the back of my shell covered pick up and they did fine. Some show fold had horse trailers, vans, or converted box trailers with a ventillation (sp) put in.
HTH

NJ-not sure on the quail what you need as far as permits if any. I asked DH and he was unsure too. He can try to find out. Next wekk he has a seminar from McFarlane Pheasants to attend. Email you questions and I can print them out and see if he can get any info for you. It might be near the end of next week though.
TO-Your cats ate the graham crackers?!?!

How are the Twins doing?

Ok, now that that is out of the way, the Girls were a lot of help today.

I got 7 eggs and someone laid one on the run out in the run, I can't get to it because the door is iced in. So someday either they will eat it or I'll get it out in spring..
The nunnies are doing well there is much movement in Cali's nest box. I have to put Lucy's nest box in her cage tomorrow.

Other then that I got a change to meet some nice folks at a hunt club and I got to give Buck the Buckskin Quarter Horse a ton of kissies and ear scratches! He was so sweet and did not mind me burring my nose is his neck for a rehabilitating sniff. He smelled so good!
