Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hey y'all.

Cc thank you!!! I will email them and ask about next spring. Although I want chicks this spring so they are laying by this fall, DH says no cause we just don't know where we'll be! I think chickens can move too. Pack up there little suitcases. I understand where he's coming from tho. Packing up a house and moving it is hard work, let alone chickens!

Running to tractor supply in a bit so I can grab some pink lemonade blueberry bushes. Cute things, 5 bucks a pop. Better get some before they start dying on their shelf.

Joe) I think you did jump the gun a bit cause aren't they predicting in a week or two we go back down to the thirties? Maybe they are lying. I did till my side garden a bit and wanted so badly to plant some cold crops. SIGH. I hate when spring teases us gardeners!

Plant a lot of peas.. they do OK in the cool spring..

Yep, ok. Then his friend jumps off, we hear a snap and a wail of pain. She goes to him, and says I think he dislocated his arm! I go over to look, and his arm is floppy with a dip in it! So they're off to the hospital! Poor poor baby... Broke both the bones in his arm and is going under general anesthesia at 8 am to set the bones properly. Just broke my heart!!!
OMWord! NOw you made MY arm hurt all over again! and it's been 15 years! I broke both bones in my lower arm and have the scars to prove it. I had to have metal plates put in. OH man seriously you made my arm hurt. lol ok back to reading....

Good Morning all,

Apyl, Sorry to hear about the poor little duckling not making it. You did the right thing though. Did you contact the feed store and tell them about him. Maybe they will give you another one. You only have one left right?

TO drive safe on your road trip. By the time you read this you will be home safe and sound though.

You talked about maybe picking something up on your road trip ??? Well did ya? I'm sure your Aunt wouldn't mind sitting next to a chicke, duck, goose or two on the way home. Or maybe a PbP or two.
You should have gotten a PbP or twy yesterday !!! What color did they have ?
Then we'd get everyone else here addicted to them and we'd have the PBPCOW (Pot Bellied Pig Club of Wisconsin)
We could bring them to bash and have Pig Races !!!
My Piggys are all outside together now. It was getting to be a bit much with the babies inside.
They used a litter box and I had them sectioned off in the foyer on linoleum but holy cow. All they did was drink and Pee !! It was hard keeping up on that litter box. Although it doesn't smell as bad as a cats litter box. PU
Anyway, we made a temporary pen and let Porky see them, no problem so I let Porky in and they are doing great. Since Porky (the older one, the one who charged me the day after I got him) was neutered he has turned into a different pig. He flopped down for the first time for a belly rub. He is so calm. Getting fat though because he was housed with three chickens and keep bumping his nose up on their feeder and eating their food. We had to raise the feeder.

The first thing the piggys did outside was start rooting in the grass. They were in heaven !!!! The little ones started lunging at Porky, He put them in their place and all is well.
Here is a picture of all of them.

Frenchie, your piggies are adorable!

Oh my goodness it is HOT! I thought I would rake out the front beds in Capri's and a T-shirt.... I am so hot now I can't stand it, and it is only 73* outside. I think I need another shower!

Two eggs today, one looks like it was laid by one of the babies from last fall since it is smaller than the other one.

Some sad news today, one of the chickens from the first group I hatched died overnight. Cute little Chipmunk the EE. Those chickens are almost 3, so a little early for her to go, but she was also the smallest of the bunch and that might have been a factor (her siblings are MUCH bigger, Amy the Roo is one of them...). Anyway, I thought I would post a pic of her as a chick, she was one of the favorites of my kids.

i have to gamble on this...I have plenty of room and I will only be out a couple of $$, but could be way ahead too! I am also setting the rows up for low lying hoop houses if the temp does drop I should be able to get everything set up and covered a couple of days prior! I might even give me some practice at growing some winter spinach!

I was eyeing those pink blueberrys last year... that is a deal on them. Wish we had a TSC around us! I want to add some more blueberry plants this year!

So ... question- what are some part shade friendly food plants I can put in for the chickens? I will try lettuce and chard, but dont know what will do well in part shade. I want to plant next to their coop a garden so we dont have to mow, but prefer foods they would eat.

FT, yay for a goose egg that's not a bump on the head!

Tiki, so sorry to hear about yr back... no fun! Tylenol has come out with some stick on heat patches. "Precise" I think they're called. As in putting the heat on a Precise place. I tried one out and my latex aversion was fine with this brand. Cool thing is you can go about your business during the day with the heat therapy working on you. btw, I'm a bookworm myself, what are you reading?! I'm all eyeball deep in a bookclub series on the civil war!

Barn paint eh? People, what would y'all recommend for me to paint on my chicken tractor wood? I guess it need some sort of sealant? Anyone have any specific products that have served you well? I haven't a clue!

Here it is thus far! *sigh* getting rained upon. whatcha gonna do

fellow Sconny newbs!

BF4, I'm not taking any chances and am using hardware cloth where ever I can on our chicken tractor! Did I mention the hawk nest about 100 yards from our house? You found the exact door that we have leading outside. Had to turn around and check that it was still there Lol. And girlfriend, let me tell you there is no better motivation to keep with a running program than signing up for an event! Go do it!

BL4, I once thought a turtle in the road was manure or a blob of something other than a turtle. Nipped it just a little bit with my car, realized what it was, wheeled back and got the little dude (apparently unhurt) and escorted him into the surrounding cat tails. Those Sconny turtles need more street smarts if you ask me. Dummy racoons and froggies too while we're at it. Good for you, doing a 1/2 continuously and bringing your total to 2.3!!!! You're getting stronger and stronger!

How can this be? Terri O's my people and she's dissing my other people at The Waterloo Pig!

Ok, ok I understand having a bad day. too bad they couldn't fix ya up just right. Didja know I live right off 89? The next time yr heading North and pass Town Hall Road on the west side of the road and then the following Jordan Rd on the west you should wave! That's our hood! You can see our barn on the left side of Jordan rd when yr heading S on 89!

(and an under construction chicken tractor in our driveway if you drive past the house really slowly!)

oooooo MazoJoe I hope your veggies turn out! Cool you have the hoop house option. It's hard to NOT plant, the weather is so gorgeous! I've heard great things about winter spinach so if this is getting in practice for that, go to it!

BL4 & Apyl, sorry to hear about your losses...

Be well all!

I have only 1 Pekin left but we have 2 other ducklings of DD's. DH says he wants to pick up 3 Mallards this week then he said we're done with getting birds lol. He's trying to play it off like I was the one who asked for the extra ducklings but it was his idea lol. Oh and I caught him warming up to the chicks too, but when he seen me come out the door he acted like he wasnt enjoying them lol.
Oh and your piggies are sooooooo cute.
