WCC- Congrats on the babies hatching

Ghost - Sorry you had a crappy day, sorry I have no suggestions just wanted to say sorry.

Cind -- mmmm Venison sounds great , DH hasnt gotten a deer in years lol

Good Morning Everyone. Well got the kids off to the bus, DS only has 1 more day of 4K this week then he becomes a kindergartener. You would think he won the lottery lol he is soooooo excited. My youngest will be starting 4K come September and I dont think she could careless lol. My oldest is the same way, she's not real thrilled about school. So, I'm glad DS loves it so much, it makes homework time that much easier.
I'm still having issues with the roosters and Shifu. Ugh. They leave her alone at first then all the sudden, one goes after her then they all gang up and chase her around and bite at her, jump on top of her, ect. Of course I go outside as soon as I hear it and she comes running to me. I have her in the pen since I figured it would be easier to pen her versus all the roosters. I know of 4 or 5 that are getting the ax this weekend. But if they keep ticking me off like they are it will be sooner. And of course while Shifu is getting chased the ducks just stand there and watch. I keep working on gettting her use to the ducks , and the Mallards are fine with her, but she is terrified of them. And Po my pekin is afraid of Shifu. Go figure. Looks like I need a few more ducks so Shifu can have her own flock lol. I'm crossing my fingers that once some of the roosters are gone things will lighten up. All the pullets accept Shifu just fine, my splash andalusian will jump into the pen and lay with her.

Well I guess thats enough rambling for now, I hope everyone has a great day.

Checkers is going to be segregated pretty quickly here. Little snot keeps picking on the babies!

The little snot just had to injured one in his bill and was running around with it! I think I might have to get my dog crate ready for a duck.....

Ok, really going now...

Good Sun Shiney Morning All! We had several waves of storms. Would watch the map and they would form just to our west heavy rain, thunder, and a little lightening. Of course the lawn needs mowiing again. But the garden is sure loving it! Headed out there today to do the weeding for the first time. Sure glad I put weed barrier down this year! Might get a little wood made this week but with the weather being so warm think it might turn into a fall winter winter job this year. Forgot to address Dan's query about it being the same bedroom that I was talking about for so long. YUP! Took a little longer than planned. About 2 yrs.

??? GR WOW what a day! Hope I miss my turn! Apyl same here with Babykins but she's standing up for herself now. Just chickens being chickens. BL4 RIP Squirrel! MLH that was cool about the pharmacy opening up. So much more! Heading to the garden before the sun gets on it/me.

Birds are singing and the sun is shining! I love it! Too bad I have to head to work in less than an hour...that is the worst thing about being self-employed; I have to fit my Monday work in to the rest of the week--usually the next day, and it gets loooong! Oh well--so many other benefits :) to gripe too much!

Cind I have about 10 broodies at any one time. THat's just chickens. In the spring I hardly have any birds walking around cause all the female waterbirds are on nests!
A weird thing happened that I have to get to the bottom of: a customer called and said that one of my chicks has developed a crossbeak! I have never had one before so I thought maybe it was an isolated incident. Well, I was in the basement taking ducks out to the outside pen and I noticed a chick that had a crossbeak! I remember that the chick the little girl wanted was a sibling to this one. Only problem is that I cant for the life of me remember what that breeding was! I guess I am going to have to wait until the chicks give me some indication of what they are! I think it is odd that they were quite normal in the beginning. I thought it was a deformaty right from the egg?

Well, like MLH I just came on to catch up...gotta run and get stuff fed before work! Have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O

(PS) Ghost--things will get better...I hate those kinds of days too!

hi all, Ken, did you read my post to you? I do not believe GQF ever built a bater without a turner..If yours does not,, then I would question if it is in fact a GQF.. I have one here that is over 25 years old.. If yours is newer, it has a turner..

You do not know me as well as some here do.. I will help you all I can, but if you choose to listen to others who might lead you down the wrong path of information, then you no longer need my help..

I do know baters and I do know what I am talking about..

how about posting some pictures of your bater? One of the inside showing the tray holders..and one of the side with the controls for the thermostats..

If you ignore my request for information, then I will understand that you do not need my input.

No problem Jim,

I will take a closer look when I get it down stairs and in a position to tear it apart. Pics will follow when available.

Thanks for the help.

I think that gives a pretty good overview.

I tried looking behind the fan but couldn't see anything back there. I am thinking about taking the back off to get a better view.

OK ken, what you have there is a hatcher. those two holes where the plastic plugs are in are where the indicator light and the toggle switch for the turner will go.

I think you can buy the turner for about $160.oo If memory serves me right.. You would still be under $300.oo overall , which is about what a used bater should go for..

there is no future in tearing the back off of the unit until you decide to install the turner.,.

I don't see what screw is missing that you mentioned earlier..

I cannot make out what the two labels say at the two tiny holes.. I am assuming those are for thermometers..

either that is a brand new unit, or it has hardly ever been used..

to initially set it up:

do not put any water in it..
turn the electronic thermostat to as high as it will go..
turn the wafer thermostat to as high as it will go..
bring the temperature up to about 101F.
then adjust ONLY the wafer thermostat to keep the temp at 101F..
once you have the temp stabilized , then you adjust the electronic thermostat to 99.5F..

now you can add water for your humidity..

from this point on, you will NEVER adjust the wafer thermostat again.. that is your fail safe setting.. If for any reason your incubator should run dry, or the electronic thermostat fails, your temp will not go above 101F..

You can put your water on the top shelf (picture #3).. Until you get your auto waterer hooked up,, drill a hole directly above your water pan and insert a small funnel.. You can add water this way without having to open the door and losing all your heat and humidity..
You can cut the bottom of a 5 gallon plastic pail off at about 3 inches high.. this makes a fine water pan and can also be converted to an automatic water pan easily..
I never have needed to add any additional water pans.. and the 5 gal conversion fits nicely on that shelf..

get a digital thermometer/hygrometer from F&F or Walmart.. I clip mine right to the water pan so I can read it through the door..

ETA: there should be holes on the rear of the unit with metal covers on them,, this is how you can raise and lower the humidity. it will not affect the temperature.. cover the holes for higher humidity, or uncover the holes for less humidity..

Thanks Jim,

I found a place to get the turner, and I would love to see a picture of how one is set up in the bator, I think I may call GQF...

Is there a place to get the frame for the auto turner? Or would I be better off making one myself?

The Wafer Screw is bent up pretty good and should be replaced.

The two label read thermometer and thermostat.

I think it was used at least twice for emu and chickens, but perhaps more.
