Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

got the chickens all watered.. still have to dump feed into the bins.. I must have been lazy because all of the bins are empty..

I went and used up the barrel of water on the cukes and squash.. now I can unload the barrel and haul some old hay down to mulch some more.. have more broccoli heads forming .. I was going to hill the potatoes, but I forgot to take some gas along.. oh well, there's always tonight or tomorrow .....

the goslings are over a week old.. I would like to introduce them into the main flock, but am afraid they are too dumb to stick with the adults.. might try it anyhow..

the peacock's tail is all but gone.. he still is a regal bird, though..

I have to run to Mosinee and pick up a lift chair that Annie bought yesterday..that means either unload the trailer,, or unload the feed out of the Blazer.. which is the lesser of two evils /??

Cindlady- Next friday lol. I set them on the 22nd.

I have a coon in the live trap, with 3 babies huddled outside of it. This is going to play with my emotions :idunno  But 3 babies will turn into 3 adults eating my chickens.

If you lock your chickens up at night theres no reason to worry about the coons. Theres no way I would kill a mother and her 3 babies. Thats horrible.

Angel, my little cochin/silkie (pictured as avatar) got beat up bad this morning. I had her in with the cochins last night and I think when the sun came up they tried to kill her. The poor thing is pretty bloody. So, she gets to be in the nice cool house until she heals and the temps get lower. My husband didn't even complain because he knows she's my favorite and it would have started a fight he couldn't win.

BBP- I realize that what's happened thus far has been my own fault with the chickens. But it's not only the chickens that I'm worried about. Now that they've gotten some of my animals they are here every night. Last night I saw over 6 coons just hanging out on my porch. If my cat was outside he could have been killed, not to mention my 8 lb dog, or my cat that's soon to have kittens. Plus with the chance of disease that any wild animal brings, specifically when they are in large groups, my nieces or my lab could get bit. I mean on 60+ acres, if they stay in my woods, then I'm not going to bother them, but it isn't okay for them to see my porch and garage as a place to just lay around in every night. In this case, I did take a trip to a friend's about half an hour away with woods and no small animals for the babies. But they are an exception.

Heather, good thing you're not milking goats,,,,,(no comment on that AC in the coop, but can I crash there if I do a road trip this summer?)

vicki, I have some of the BSL's from Sunnyside, the cross is RIR X Barred Rock,,,,I have a couple that have indicated the broody behavior but if I move them a couple of times they have quit,,,,it's pretty much bred out of them I think. I have 3 hens that have been broody for weeks now,,,,,I plan to move them into a cage off the ground, a friend told me this seems to work for him,,,mentioned they can't keep the temp up underneath,,,don't know until I try it

OK,,,a question for you experienced folks. I have a Black Copper Marans pullet (18wks) that has an eye problem. Just started today, one eye was shut, I caught her and flushed it really well with Saline. A small amount of yellow discharge had crusted the outside lid closed. After getting this washed off and continued flushing the eye was almost normal. Within an hour it was again shut. I would guess it is an injury, scratch, scape deal,,,,,suggestions as to what to use after flushing tomorrow? She was calm and relaxed during and after the treatment, which is pretty cool since I really don't handle these birds,,,,,,

ok,,,,,,,long hot day,,, a shower is next on my list (then ICE CREAM!)
Do you have any terramycin (sp)? It's made for the eyes. It's a very tiny tube that I think FF carries. Foster and Smith used to carry it. Not sure if they still do. In a pinch I've heard of people putting triple antibiotic ointment (with out the pain relief in it) in the eyes with no problems. I did it once and the bird can still see (lol)

Just keeping the gunk off will help I'm sure too. Don't envy you if you are doing alot of greenhouse work these days !!!

BigFam-I was starting to wonder if you were drunk and the kids finally drove you to drink!!! Hope your hand gets better! What did you do?

FT-I'd do the North Pole too. However, the North Pole is in the water so if the ice melts were up a creek with out a paddle! That would suck!
Well that rule out North Pole !!! I'm alread short one paddle !!!

Coons have to go. I'm not heartless, but they killed my chickens I HAD locked up. They tore a board off my coop to get at them. No more. They eat all our outside cat food. So I'm buying waaaay more feed because of them. They are stalking my ducks, scaring the crap out of them while they are locked up. They are crapping in my backyard where my chickens and ducks free range. Diseases in fecal material. If the babies are tiny, then I would let them go. BUT this last week I trapped a coon that brought 4 young coons with her. Not tiny, but young. Their mother is no more. Those same coons are still coming into my backyard every night. If they get caught in a trap, they're next. I'm sorry, but imagine how you would feel if Angel was locked up safe and sound and a raccoon ripped her head off and fed on her, leaving you a bloody corpse in the morning. You may feel different.

There is no possible way for a coon to get in my coop. A bear could probably pull the door off, otherwise it's predator proof. I have a soft spot for coons because we used to take orphans in and raise them when I was a kid. They are going to eat where there's an opportunity just like everything else.

I think it's nap time. I'm tired!
or maybe coffee? idk. I have to get outside yet, all the birds are free but I have to go out and feed and check waterers. I don't wanna go out there.
we have a trap only because we have stray cats GALORE. but the only cats that we've ever caught are our own lol stupid things!

Smmer Afternoon To All... Nice to see you stop by Tomski...yep, I always buy the poppys from the vets, as well as donate to two soldier related places... Disabled Vets and United States Armed Forces....thanks again!

Sorry for the losses....not fit for man nor beast outside lately.

Outside at 5am today....picked 2 gallon bags of nice broccoli heads, another 2 gallon bags of spinach....I pull the plants for the best harvest and will replant again in August....pulled the last of the radishes too.

Good information about the wolf hunt on the weekly DNR news....lookin like $10 to apply for a tag and another $100 if you are drawn...we are in zone 3 and it sounds like they want to harvest 50% to 75% because this is a unsuitable area for wolfs.....DUH....

New fan helping to crank the cool air upstairs from the basement.... I'm gonna prolly break down and get AC, I guess, if I have to, I suppose.

Watermellon still on sale for $3....two backups now for the remaining bowl left on the current one.

Stay Safe Out There
