Last night as soon as I shut the garden sprinkler off it rained. Got half an inch.

Lots of black clouds and thunder this morning but think it's all to the north. The kids heard the thunder last night and went to bed early they had no idea what that noise was. Thinkin there might ba a second crop of hay if we get some more rain. Third crop very unlikely at this point. WCc that sucks about the "marsh grass" ! Hope you get your water problem fixed quickly too! I've been keeping a close eye on the garden pump when it's running. Thinks it's only down about 16'. Picked enough cuc's for around 3 qts of pickles this morning and pulled some dill so that's on the itinerary. Getting 4-7 eggs a day, the poult eggs are almost full sized.

I just love going out in the morning. The chickens are makin noise but as soon as they hear the back door close they get real quiet and listen for footsteps to let them out.

No rain this morning, it's all south of us this time. Not supposed to get more til this evening.

Going out to pick now. My bean patch is loaded and I need to check on my onions. Think the girls are getting one of Zucchini that turned into baseball bats after the last rain. Swiss chard and collards are just getting out of hand even with the girls snitching everything they can get their beaks on and my Rhubarb looks like some kind of tropical jungle plant! Don't want to think my amish paste toms. The plants are loaded and it looks like every one of them is going to ripen at exactly the same time and of course it will most likely be about mid next week right in the middle of the next heat wave!

Oh well, not going to curse the blessing

Hi Judge! you are soooo, lucky! you are going to be able to beat me to those Chantecleers!

Apyl~CC is right. My dumb big black went broody and we don't even have a roo! (tho there were some where she came from)

Nice and not sunny here! The clouds are grumbling but not kicking with any of the good stuff. They are all saving it for Vicki. Because she needs it....

I hope it snows on you Vicki! You and your beans and tomatoes!! Hah!!

Got the chickens fed and the wild birds. They were all sitting on the power lines tapping their little feet. The doves were the first ones down, followed by the house sparrows and the black birds. The Blue Jay was screaming from across the street.

Judge-see told ya more people would be on! Now you have tons of options!!

Cind-That sucks about your pump! Maybe a rummage sale will help? There is a barter section on CL. Maybe you have something to trade for a pump? Hope you can get one soon.

Vicki-That is it!! I'm invading and I'm bringing the rabbits! They love cold weather.....I jealous! I wish we were in the 50's....I need to move farther north....

BL4-keeping my fingers crossed for ya!

Ok, gotta go. DH needs socks and I have to go run to the bank and the market. Again...I hate that market thing...Grrr

Cind - I dont mind the hens going broody, DH was worried they would hatch babies all winter if we housed the roos with the girls and he was worried they'd freeze. I think what he was getting at was he doesnt want babies to hatch mid winter and I bring them in the house lol
Oh and I'm sorry about the pump, that really sucks.

BL4 -Good luck, that really stinks what your going thru with all this

Well not to bad this morning so far. There is an overcast and its a bit cooler so that nice. We got less than a 1/4 inch of rain yestarday then everything turned orange it was pretty cool. No eggs yestarday, I'm assuming to hot or they layed in the weeds. I tried looking but there is just to much brush that they chickens run around in. I talked to my DD yestarday as well, she's coming home early and will be here sometime Sunday I miss that kid like crazy. She's been gone for 6 weeks already and wasn't going to come home until Aug 5th but I guess its getting boring lol.Not much is going on today, just need to clean and do some laundry. Maybe it will rain and cool the house down a bit. Well I hope everyone has a good day.


ETA: so much for not getting eggs today, my Barred Rock just laid one and the kids watching her. One ran in the house to tell me Ally was going crazy and stuck in the bucket lol

Remember we may be blessed up here this summer but I have a bad feeling it is going to come back to bite us come winter!

It's been a while since we had -30o + and 6 ft drifts. Our trees have grown more this year than ever before I can remember because of, in part, the extremely mild winter and early spring. Soooo, you "southerners" may have the last laugh yet by Christmas.

You could see if there is a free cycle near you, you might also check the craigslist and Re-Store a store that sells stuff from homes that helps the habitat for humanity, AND you can also get a hold of some plumbing companies, and those that specifically work with wells and pumps. If nothing else they may be able to find you a used one, from a home that has upgraded, or one that was demolished but pieces salvaged.
it can't hurt to make a few calls.

We apparently did get some rain here last night, and smelled nice and is cool right now, but its just not enough.
I have been saying the weather guys on t.v. say we will get a chance of rain, just to give us false hope.

Good morning! Starting to heat up again but it sure was nice last night when the front came through! Got some much needed rain...almost "Connected the Dots" on the sidewalk. I think it rained a bit more during the night and this morning after hunting the fox I got a downpour on my head! That was sure a nice feeling--really big drops too. It was funny cause when I got up at 5:30 there was blue sky and white clouds. It must have moved in fast cause I was only out for an hour. Didnt see the critter(s) either.

Got some nice potatoes from the garden for dinner last night. I dug the ones that self-sowed as the tops were already dead. The rest of them are still green and growing...keeping my fingers crossed for lots of spuds under the hills! Geez Vicky--my beans are just starting to flower--well the ones that those darn Japanese Beetles havent defoliated. First year for them here and I havent seen that many but they must work quickly! The poor climbing beans are just stems.

Cind--I feel for ya with that pump! When we first bought this place we came home to a geyser in the back yard after DH replaced the jet pump in the pit. Too much water pressure for the old pipes! We had to dig a new well cause the pit ones were not in compliance with the code and a professional well guy wouldnt/couldnt fix it! So now we have two! I hope you dont have to do that though...so to get to the housing you have to rip out a floor? I am trying to picture how it is set up...

DD20 just brought in a chick that cant find it's Mom...it was peeping and running around this morning too...I think it is probably an early hatch from the one in the milk house. I threw it back up there yesterday...it seems pretty happy now in with the bator chicks in the TV! Speaking of...the Cuckoo Marans did well...looks like I have 2 roos and 8 pullets! There is one I am not too sure about cause it appears to be brownish? Maybe there is something weird in the genes...any ideas Cheryl?

Well, I suppose I ought to get to work...phone calls to make about a client then I have to go and clean some carpeting at a client's house. I think I was supposed to do something else too...oh the farrier is coming today--that's right. Better get moving!

Our pregnant siamese went missing somewhere in the house today. Probably having kitties. Just what we need! xD

Turned out that out of all 9 of my SLW that we bought, we have 9 roos. Sold as straight run. I feel like this was intentional!

The weather this year has been so funky! We had like no winter, an early spring, and a super dry summer!

TO- Ummmm if I'm correct, I got 2 from the AM x andulasian cross, 4 from the wheatons, 2 from the blacks, and 6 from your blue broody? We had 3 that didn't hatch, but other than that it's a sea of black and blue's

The goslings are good All the kids love to watch them swim.

jvls- when we got the birds we were told that there were 6 New Hampshire pullets and 6 Buff orpington pullets. Well... we ended up with at least 3 PR roosters and 3hens (hopefully) and 6 Red star pullets.

I do not want to breed any of them. We were just waiting to be sure which ones were roosters and keep one and then butcher or sell the rest. That is why I would really like to get a few more laying hens to add to the flock

I would butcher all of the PR roosters,, we can set you up with a decent rooster if you need a rooster.. those PR roosters will throw small offspring that won't be good for butchering.. unless you like small chickens to butcher.. I should be able to set you up with a Del rooster or else a barred rock, or a Welsumer.. You would be well off with a BO rooster.. they are quite mild mannered.. I used to have BO's but not anymore..

Ok, so, beautiful high clouds and with temps in the 70's and a good breeze. Perfect bean picking weather!

Get done with minor chores, giving it time to dry out a bit and laughing at the chooks trying to get my attention by standing on the woodbox under the kitchen window while I sit at the table with my coffee, when what do I hear hitting the porch roof? Rain, AGAIN! Darn. Now I have to play inside

. Opps! The workshop windows and the greenhouse are wide open. Grab the umbrella, hit the porch and here comes all the girls on a run as soon as I step off , under the umbrella they go and stay right with me all the way to the coop! Ok, that confirms it, I have waayyy over did the spoiling thing!

I am sooooooooo, grateful hubby wasn't home to grab the camera I must have looked like Mary Poppins!
