Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Amy... I put the cukes in the sink with ice, and more ice, and more ice. I usually ice them for a couple hrs immediately before pickling. They even stay crisp with the hot water bath. I was pretty happy last year.
But I DID want to hear what Doc does as well. So PLEASE SHARE with Amy and I (screw the rest of 'em)

Cool... Just watched the movie/ documentary "God Bless Ozzy Osbourne"... very interesting!
When???? What channel????? I love that man. He is an absolute riot!

As for the egg, I have no clue who laid it, but that is the second one almost that exact same size in 4 or 5 days. I sure the heck hope she doesn't hurt herself trying to get them out. I'm guessing it might be one of my lav orps?

I haven't cracked that egg open yet, Terri, but the first one that size was a double. I sure as heck hope she won't become an internal layer.

Bl4, I'd say the poultry should have to be confined to the owners property. Everyone should have a run for their birds, which would be safer for them in town anyway. (Think of neighbors dogs). And if anyone wouldn't keep their coops/run clean, then they should be subject to at least a steep fine.

Vicki, that is a cute story. I am so glad none of my girls are as devious as yours & Cind's are.

Judge, how old are your chickens? When some of mine were first coming into lay, they would sometimes squeeze them out on the roosts. You could try putting a golf ball in the nest boxes so they get the hint.

Joe! Glad you're back!

Twiz, awwww! Cute kitties! And I guess you can't blame mama for having good taste in bedding.

Ugh! It is ugly hot out there! I finally was able to catch Brunswick this morning so now he is in the house with Jasmine. And not too thrilled about it either, the little snot. It is just too hot out for that old guy, but he sure didn't look like he was bothered by the heat. I was running frozen ice jugs out for him every 2 hours, so that helped, but I feel better having him in.

We have to take Ramses to see his cardiologist later today. He looks like his breathing is getting heavy, so I'm sure they'll have to drain the fluid out of his chest again. I sure wish they could find a better medication that would control that. Poor guy.

Time to run more ice out to the ladies. Bbl.

Ok, so this is an advance preparation for IF I need to get rid of my chickens! My Stella is making so much noise laying that I am sure that someone will eventually call the cops. SO in the event that I do need someone to take my 3 hens plus feed and treats, feeders, etc is anyone interested?

I have 2 red stars and one RIR. All are healthy and 5 mos. old. Only Stella is laying at this time, but the other two are due anytime!

We are still house hunting and looking for places with land. Unfortunately, most are out of our price range. Its always a time game. It'll take us "X" amount of time to find a house and close and it'll take "X" amount of time until someone turns us in for chicken keeping. There is no guarantee that we will be able to get a house in the country (unfortunately due to cost) and if we have to take a house on a smaller parcel of land, we will not be able to hide the hens!

On a lighter note (but still money driven), I actually came to an agreement with the 2 companies that hold my student loan debt!
celebrate.gif
DH & I had checked our credit reports this weekend to clear them up for our FUTURE house and 99% of my debt is student loan! Making this arrangement with the companies will drastically improve my credit score. I should have worked for a government agency or an inner city school for 10 years to wipe all of my student loan debt to zero, but I chose to go into environmental matters!

Other than all of that.... I am going home to DH, the girls (hens), and my garden. The gr.beans are really coming on here. I picked a meals worth yesterday and there will probably be the same to pick today. Unfortunately, the squash vines are starting to show signs of borers. Have any of you had luck with putting Seven on the base of the vine? I know that the borer is up inside of the vine, but I am not sure whether the powder will be effective. I planted radish seeds recently, but I think its already to late for that to help! I hope that they don't kill off my crop. I should have a TON of various squash varities if they can come to harvest age.

Hi all,

Just found this website and am glad I did. We live in Madison, have 3 hen and one unintentional Wyn. Blue Rooster. He is very social but loud enough to wake the dead. Also, our hens are about 5 months old and none have started to lay. Is that normal? We have a Silver Wyn., a Americana, and a Columbian Rock. Should I be putting golf balls into their nesting area to stimulate them?

cs, if the SVBs are already in the vines you are screw ed (let's see if that works),,,,you can look for the entrance holes (frass*) and fish them out with a wire,,,some also inject a liquid insecticide to kill the larvae,,,,I don't think dusting will help a bit

for future reference there are traps available that will reduce the impact,,,google should find them for you

Good afternoon!! Who said it was HOT? (no kidding!) I am pleased with our window unit...I figured out that I needed to hang a blanket in the doorway in FRONT of the basement door and the hall window and also keep the bathroom door closed. IT is actually quite comfortable in here...I have it on "economy" (what a joke!) so it turns on and off with a thermostat. DH is under the impression that it is MUCH cooler in here when it runs all the time...too bad--that drives me NUTS! It is noisy enough in this house to be sure.

Welcome back NJ! I was kinda wondering where you went to!
I will have to see about a fox hunt...we've got the dogs and the horses and the jods...HMMM, all we need I guess is DrH to show up with the horn! I think that fox is coming in through the other side of the yard now...this morning there was a suspiciously large scattering of feathers near the water tank...I guess I get up early tomorrow~

Guess I better get on outside and rewater...they were a bit thirsty this morning so I better get at it!
I hope you all are staying somewhat comfortable! Later--Terri O
(PS) have a safe trip Kris!

Welcome Rcath! We are glad you found us too! There are many Wisconsinites that are on BYC but dont search hard enough to find out our "hidden spot!" Totally normal for your hens...I had some BLue Ameraucanas that took their good sweet time in starting to lay. I think they were nearly 7 months before I got my first egg!

Hey you guys with the borers...I always seemed to get them here too but one year when I planted them late I didnt have any problems. So that is what I do with mine now...I wait to plant (especially the zucchini) and dont have problems at all! I would try liquid insecticide injection...rather that than "Plant surgery" ...I have heard that that also works though...

OK--now I am going outside...I think. Terri O

and to the Cheesehead thread! Hope you like it here & visit often.

Hens can come into lay anywhere between 16 to 24 weeks, some even later, depending on the breed. Your rooster should let you know when they are ready to lay. He'll start wanting to do what roos do.

Golf ball are a good idea so they get the hint on where they should be laying. It won't help with "stimulating" them to lay. Only hormones can do that.
