Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well Miss Pepper Pots is found. Apparently she was hiding in the corner of the shed. She never stays in there. I don't think she's going broody because she's pretty young, and marans aren't know for going broody. I wonder if her and Lady Bird got in a tiff because Lady ate all the treats...:D

oh, ok, sorry I am a bit slow

Fighting allergies that seem to the the worst ever. It is a good idea but I think i would rather incubate, them, more exciting than have a hen do it, besides, none of the ladies are broody, they lay eggs, then join the rest of the girls scratching and clucking.
When you BUY your eggs next spring you place them under the broody hen and she will hatch and raise them rather than you renting and running an incubator.
You do not need a rooster for her to go broody and start setting.

You say that now. Oh Dave, you have no idea what you are in for. You are about to cross over to the dark side. But be brave. The rest of us all like it here.

Just ask Bigfam about her "single use" bator.

god, I hope not, I have 7 already, was thinking about incubating 1 doz. Remember I live in a rural subdivison with 1 acre plots, I think if I get another 6x8 coop, that would be plenty, especially since I hate eggs

We are 15 miles SE of Clintonville 13 miles NW of Black creek........... Not sure where Green leaf is.......... will look you up..... can always use extra to can what ya got?.....
Beautiful Pictures BTW.......... wish I could get a decent camera, only have a cheap 35mm, and my digital, if I took a good camera out hunting with me I could get some really cool pictures, have seen some awe inspiring things as the sun comes up on a cool frosty Oct/ Nov morning.............
That's a little bit of a haul...GoogleMap 'Wayside, WI' - that's our teeny town. I'm thinking we're at least 45 min apart. Got cukes coming out my ears, lots of chard, hot peppers, tomatoes and some good chunks of basil. Want some rambunctious ground cherry plants?

In photography, it really is more the 'eye' than the equipment. Nice cameras help, but nice cameras are at the mercy of their users. Even a disposable camera can produce a nice photo. DH's uncle has the same camera I do, and he found a lens for it at an amazing price online. I bet you could get a steal on a refurbished camera. There are companies that buy/sell used ones, I can dig the names out of my photo mags if you like.

Hey all anyone have any nice chicken photos? There is a thread to enter chicken photos for the 2013 BYC Calender in the pictures and stories of my chickens thread.

Jewel says to boyfriend (Mac)~: "Wow thats a really nice picture! What kind of camera do you use?"

Boyfriend~"Thank You it is a cannon Rebel"

Later that day after supper Mac says to Jewel ~"Wow that was a really good supper. What kind of pans do you use?" ;)

Procrastinating here...I need to go to the grocery store...
So Amy--what do you use the ground cherries for? Are yours the "wild variety" I have a ton growing everywhere and would really like to use them for something!

THe hobbled quail is now doing great...I must have gotten the tape just right this time because he shuffles when he walks and doesnt fall down this time. I thought he was gone cause I couldnt pick him out of the bunch!
Hey Joe...I think you should save me some eggs from your quail if they are laying by the fall bash! Are the jumbos really twice the size of mine? I would like to have a larger bird to butcher for sure!

Just got off the ohone witht he vet...my horse did something to his leg/knee. It is very swollen and sore. I got a prescription for some "Bute" for him. DD20 says her horse has a problem with his tendons too! I rode him yesterday and didnt feel anything...I hope he is OK--she has a cross county clinic at Otter Creek in 2 weeks!

This morning I cleaned out my little coop in the shed...it was getting stinky. I tossed all the eggs that they had in there...some were growing--I didnt look! I need to get some eggs from those birds instead of them sitting on them and never getting off even when the babies hatch! ENOUGH! I still have a half dozen ducks on eggs...they just wont quit! I think Frankie is on her 4th or maybe 5th clutch...of course she starts in February!
Definitely going to be a butcher day coming up...I am hoping I can get a few of my friends to help...maybe.

Has anyone seen the fly attractant that is stinky yellow liquid for the Terminator traps? The flies seem to be getting the best of my fly preds this year...cant ever remember having this many! F&F had the attractant but was out last time so I got some powder...JUNK! It didnt catch half the amount that the other stuff did.

Well, I guess I am going to go and move more birds...I want to get the basement brooder room cleaned out while it is still nice outside.
THen to the grocery store I guess...hopefully the vet will call and I can get the bute while I am out too.

Scalloped potatoes and ham, yellow beans and marinated tomatoes for supper...MMMM!

Hi everyone!
this is for you Jim

CC~I agree with your thoughts. I was wondering if that couldn't have been what happened too. Especially after I found the very thin, "rubber" shell. Just I didn't think Stirfry was the one laying those eggs

BF4~ glad your little Marans showed up

Gorgeous day today! Got to actually go play in town for a bit this morning while hubby "chickie" sat
cool.png
such a sweety. I was in huge need of a haircut! I was beginning to look waaaaay too much like my puppy! Had mom and the chickie out in the run for quite a while this afternoon with all the other girls in there too for the first time. Everyone just ignored the baby unless mom called it over to a yummy morsel that "top" hen, Soup, thought she should have. I guess she's already letting the little one know who rules the roost

. Mommy butt is HUGE into dust bathing (probably from being cooped up so long) and the dirt usually starts flying as soon as she is let out. Yesterday, this little tiny "fluff ball" got the bright idea to imitate mom and it was hilarious! All it managed to accomplish was to get too close to mom and get a full hit of flying dirt!

. Wow, they sure do feather out fast, it's just a week old today and you can already see the wing feathers. BTW~anything I can watch for this early as to possible sex? I know, but I'm really, really hoping it's a hen!

Now I have to get out and pick MORE toms. I am running out of jars and motivation this year! Already turned the chooks loose on the cukes. Enough already. It's fall up here. Time to be dehydrating herbs and getting the freezers ready for hunting season!

TO, if i had eggs I would gladly bring you some, but they will be just short of 6 weeks...I hatched the quail in 3 different trays so I could compare the hatch rates and the size. The top two trays were my eggs (your offspring) and my friends quail he has acquired. My hatch rat was not very good only about 50%, his was better almost 90%. His birds are older and my eggs were some of the first. When I put them together, I really could not believe the size difference. This spring I will do some trading with you and or BF4m...(i think she needs some quail too)!

Gotta go get DD and start training mean roosters...or off with their heads

She might not be the one with the rubber shells.

When an egg breaks inside a hen, their body produces lots of fluids to soften up the shell pieces inside so they can crap them out without doing as much damage.
